If by computer you mean desktop or laptop, then no, you do not need those. Most routers software is accessed by browser. You can use a browser on a smart phone or even a gaming console to access it. Some routers (mostly older routers) require a wired ethernet connection for initial setup however.

only with Asus routers. All Asus routers with AIMESH features can make any compatible router into a satellite unit, pretty cool when you use wifi 6 routers, cos it use one of the wifi 6 bands just for data (backhaul) since most gaming are tri-band, (2.4ghz/5ghz/5ghz) so its blazing fast.

My speeds are pretty slow, probably because I'm 2 floors away from the router (BT Smart Hub). Can you recommend a very good router to improve range/speed/bandwidth issues?

@@ehsan3954 I assume you are wireless on 2.4Ghz band. 5Ghz will give you much higher speeds, but it's bad at range. you can try getting a powered single router like Asus RT-AX88U. just anything with 4x4 antennas. It's overkill specs and you probably don't have wifi 6 clients (only brand new laptop/phones have it at the moment) but it'll still be better the BT shit-hub range and speed. Generally ceilings/floors are easier then walls, but only when it's straight up, if you put some walls in between then it'll still be tough. If you want solid speed/connections, its cables. but for wireless its MESH using wifi 6 (160Mhz for the best) as a dedicated transfer backhaul channel cos no one is connected to it. For out-of-the-box, Asus zenwifi AX. you will get close to 900Mbps transfer under 14m to satellite nodes. If you're on budget, get the AC version, has two 5Ghz channel, even lower price range? Zenwifi AX mini, only single 2x2 wifi 6/5Ghz shared, but for it's price its alright. Nighthawk Mk62 is an alternative, solid range but mesh speed is capped at 100mbps. If mesh isn't an option and you ereally want one router? You can gamble on the older RT-AC88U or mid-tier RT-AX3000, at least it has 4x4 antennas and new cpu/chipset. Im biased towards Asus cos the web control is ace and much more reliable than TP/cisco/netgear, but get whatever is your thing. cheers.

I don’t know if you can solve my issue or not but I got fiber like probably 3 or 4 weeks ago right because it this became available and I got the 1gig plan and I was this using the gateway for probably 2 weeks then I decided to test the xr1000 with the gateway and at first everything works fine all the features are working as they do geo filter is working no issues but maybe 24 hours later or sooner without any warning the led changes from a white led which means everything is functional and working properly to a steady orange led which makes it to wear I can’t connect to the internet what’s or ever no matter if I’m using a wireless connection for my phone or a wired connection for my ps5 if you have a way of fixing this issue that would greatly be appreciated it sorry for the long paragraph this had to explain everything that’s going on currently

If it is about gaming you should probably check your graphics card first since gaming routers are expensive. For the highest performance graphics cards for gaming i recommend you check GeForce Rtx, GeForce Gtx and AMD Radeon graphics cards. If latency and ping is a problem then you should think about buying a router. 👍

Its hard to say without details. How is your device connected? Is it wifi or wired? If wifi, how far away is your device from the router? Run a speed test on a wired device and compare that with the speeds you should be getting.

The OG base PS4 only has 2.4GHz wifi, the PS4 Slim & PS4 Pro both have 5GHz wifi as well, so it depends on what PS4 you have. If you have to game on wifi you want 5GHz.

Warning. Setup using a PC on Ethernet connection can be problematic. The web interface of the router is fussy about which browser is used and make sure you disable any adblock software otherwise you will have a bad time. The router takes quite a while to boot and updating the smallest of settings takes about 30 seconds. I also had issues because my internet would not automatically configure because it needed a login/password. Also, the phone app is likely to fail if your internet connection needs login/password and any additional VLAN/Bridge settings.

Your “lag” and “packet loss” will be a latency issue. You can have good download and upload speeds and still have bad latency. If your with Virgin Media by any chance. Chances are it’s a “utilisation” issue. Where they quickly rush and build “new super fast fibre broadband” for an area, but do it poorly. Resulting in both you and anyone in your area (also using VM) will be using up all the “bandwidth” available. Meaning the only way for the issue to be solved is for Virgin Media to install brand new cables and a whole new setup for your whole area…. Meaning it’ll either never be done or will be a long time until. My knowledge is very limited but I’m experiencing this exact issue myself currently and after some hours of research this seems to be a common factor.

The congestion control should be set to auto so that it only caps throughput when you are actually gaming. While their instructions don't detail it fully, the goal is you do ping tests and lower the speeds until your ping times stop having large increases. Then it should be set to auto so that you get your full speed at all times except when you are gaming. Beyond that, you set up the QOS separately where for traffic that is not very ping sensitive, it will allow full use of all available throughput, but will allow you to prioritize certain traffic, e.g., giving youtube and other streaming services a higher priority.

To clarify most "gaming routers" are wifi/multiple ethernet port hubs... you will need a separate box for your internet connection... either a cable modem (Cox/Spectrum, etc) or "ONT" box for fiber optic internet (like AT&T)... simply put... Wall-line to Modem/ONT, ethernet line from the modem to your gaming router/wifi hub (computers/devices connect to the router/wifi hub). Your modem is the gateway to the internet, the fastest router is still going to be limited to whatever your modem/ISP provides. Remember how this all gets to your devices: INTERNET >>> Modem/ISP >>> Router/Wifi >>> Your Computer/Device If you have super fast Modem/ISP but a crappy router/wifi, you'll get crap access to the internet If you have super fast router/wifi but a very slow modem/ISP service, you'll get crap access to the internet If you have super fast modem/ISP and a super fast router/wifi, you'll get great access to the internet Examples: You have a fast cable modem provider that gives you 1 Gbps download, a great modem, but a really ancient low quality WiFi-4 router... bad experience on your computer. You have a super slow DSL provider that gives you 24 Mbps download or cheaped out and got the slowest cable download speed, a great modem and a great WiFi-6 router... bad experience on your computer, so if you cheap out on that, having a great router won't save you.

@@MATTW3R I'm not sure there's such a thing as a "gaming modem" since the features that prioritize or optimized for gaming are going to come from your router and/or WiFi... if you have multiple devices you want multiple streams and/or fast streams and/or things that can prioritize gaming signals over non-gaming ones... those are all features of a router/wifi device. Your modem only really does one thing... provide the internet signal to the router/wifi device which then figures out the rest. The only thing I can really say about your modem, is that it should be "quality" and it should be equal-to or faster-than handling the speed your ISP is providing (a 500 Mbps modem isn't good for a 1 Gbps plan)... so really, just get a quality modem that's equal or faster to the speed of your plan, you'll be fine... the router/wifi device is where you pay closest attention for gaming. For me, i have a Motorola MB8611 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem with 2.5G Ethernet... note the 2.5 Gbps capability is future proofing, my ISP only provides 1 Gbps currently. Also remember cable modems are for cable ISP... if you have a fiber optic line, like from AT&T, they don't use cable modems, you'd need a completely different device for your gateway.

Heres a question for anyone, so recently i had to reinstall windows 3x and ever since my ping when playing with my mates on xbox whilst im on pc has had massive latency variation and it got so bad i got a new router and this didn’t fix the issue, is it possible that it could be motherboard related because before i reinstalled windows i had no issues doing the same task

how far is the range on this? Looking at picking up something for gaming and love the idea of this router, but also looking for the most coverage I can get for my other devices. XBOX is hardwired.

Netgear is great. Mine I can literally walk across the street at my neighbor's and get great speeds. Around 70mbps. No joke

Most ISP's charge you a "rental" fee for their equipment/routers... so if your using the router provided by your ISP, you're probably paying something like $10/month for "renting" the router from them on your ISP bill. Over a year, that's $120... two years $240... etc, etc. Or you can buy your OWN router, which is probably going to be better than your ISP provides, return the router you're "renting" from your ISP to them, and cut $10/mo off your bill... it will more than pay for itself over time.
