The only thing the cloud controller (or cloud key as it is actually called) does is allows you to managed your Wireless APs from anywhere you have internet so you dont have to be on the same LAN as the AP to manage it. Its especially useful if you have multiple clients you managed their APs for them or multiple buildings in your company and each have a different subnet. It is NOT needed if you dont care to manage it from abroad and it is NOT needed to allow your devices to roam from AP to AP if you have more then one in your house.

I have now set up the ubiquiti lite inmy flat and now I get an almost perfect signal and speed all over my flat. I pay for 70meg I expect 70meg and now I have 70meg with the exception of devices in poor line of sight of the AP but even then a Max drop of 20% is seen. So I'm really happy it was easy to set up following Alex's advice. And really controllable via the app. Full Mark's.im very happy thanks Alex I trusted your judgement and it's payed off.

Got the Ubiquiti UAC-AP-Lite in my home a while back. It is perfect for our needs, and a single one in the middle of the house provides full coverage even part way into the garden. It doesn't make our internet faster, but it definitely covers a much larger area than our ISP's router...

@linagee
@linagee 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on what speed you're trying to get. Higher speeds: you better have them all over. Lower speeds: Just one or two is fine for a typical house size. Huge house might also need more than two. If you have gigabit internet and are trying to get gigabit speeds everywhere, better have them like every 15-20 feet.

Bought those access points on the hope of better WiFi and no joy at all. Lots of cheap access points worked out better because short distances where radio frequencies are over used are better, downside was more cables.

Ryan White It depends really. I hear about them often as I work in Legal IT and they have some special features such as multiple Pre-Shared key support that are useful in this segment of IT. And they are pretty encrypted, so if someone physically stole your Aerohive, they wouldn't be able to extract anything useful from it such as keys connecting to servers. However, I personally like the Ubiquiti a bit more because their Unifi software is pretty amazing.

arranmc182 Kali can take out pretty much any AP unless you're using something like protected management frames (802.11w). Unfortunately WiFi itself was designed with this inherent flaw, in which you can deauth a AP without being connected to it.

At it's price point for the consumer market, it probably is the best money can buy bringing in Enterprise features. But it's just not "Enterprise" in the truest sense of the word, far behind what Cisco and HPE Aruba are offering, this is a Wave 2 access point and the bottle neck will be the 1Gb copper port, there is no mGig offering here or on there switching platform. Hospitality situations also couldn't offer BLE beacons with wayfinding app, asset tracking, etc. There is a reason items such as 3802I are around £600.

A huge factor is what speed your internet is. Anywhere from one to four. One if you have ~50 Mbps internet. Four if you have gigabit and you want fast speeds all over. (Two per floor.)
@MrTechetmo
@MrTechetmo 6 жыл бұрын
Why these very specific channels ? I mean it really depends on other wifis around your area and how “crowded” a certain channel is in your specific setup scenario. You can’t just say that channel is always the best in any case. So I would suggest leaving it in automatic since then the AP will figure out which channel is the least crowded. By the way, I use both the Lite and the Pro myself at home, works like a charm ! The only downside is that for all the “good stuff” you need to buy a security gateway and a controller (or raspberry Pi like I did) aswell.

negative. channels 1,6, &11 are the only non overlapping channels for 2.4 Ghz. If you want to avoid interference, use 1, 6 or 11. Read this for more info forums.metageek.com/showthread.php?7403-Overlapping-amp-Co-Channel-Communications
@bruno-vicious
@bruno-vicious 6 жыл бұрын
To add to what Dalton said yes 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap. Yes there is the likelihood that a neighbor might stomp between those channels and create interference but the truth it the more APs you have on the same channel the less interference you have. When APs are on the same channel even if they are different SSIDs they all have to participate in a CSMA/CA process. This is how the 802.11 standard works. The point of CSMA/CA is to avoid radio interference. When you have APs outside of the channel they are less likely to participate in that CSMA/CA process which increases the chances of more interference and dropped packets.
@linagee
@linagee 5 жыл бұрын
I would not leave 5 Ghz on automatic. It might go to a DFS frequency. (They still don't have a checkbox saying "Don't use DFS freqs on automatic!") This is fine as Ubiquiti is DFS certified, but sometimes it prevents other equipment from connecting. (Also it may automatically switch to lower power transmit to comply with regulations.)

i don't understand one thing. if your are taking a plan of 50 Mbps from your ISP, whichever router you use you will get around 50 Mbps right? or if you use a $500 router you suddenly get 200 upload and 250 download is it or not if so then i am ready to buy 4 of them right now.

Out of curiosity, does the ubiquiti access point have also a router built-in, because if not it requires you to have a separate router to run alongside it which in most cases is an ISP router, for example, a bt hub 5 which has a combined modem, router and, access point. Do you think it would be better to get all ubiquiti gear also including getting a much more higher end modem, router, and AP or to stick with your ISP router and just disabling the inbuilt access point and in turn connect a ubiquity AP instead?
@morgantarry
@morgantarry 6 жыл бұрын
Euan Bailey The HomeHub 5 is a decent ISP provided router, however I would recommend the USG 3P or Edge Router X from Ubiquiti. The UniFi AP can connect to one of the routers Ethernet ports. Just disable the wireless function on your HomeHub and your sorted.

As I've got quite a wide house, the home hub 5 which doesn't completely cover the whole area, luckily the house is wired with CAT5e and ready for investing in. so far I'm only using a small TP-Link range extender, so I think I will keep my home hub 5 and just buy a ubiquity access point and use that for extra coverage ( I've already got a POE switch for my CCTV system which is an added bonus.)

Alex, what about Ubiquiti's Amplify? The best thing about those crap consumer units is that you don't have to go around drilling holes in ceilings to conceal wires etc. Mesh vs Access point would be a good video as the Amplify (or another mesh setup) is as easy as a consumer unit to install.

@williscooper7750

The AP doesnt decide what band the device will connect at, the device decides that. The device will always connect to the closest strongest signal first then. If you have a 5GHz cable device and you want it to always connect at 5G on these APs then you need to turn the 2.4 signal strength down so it doesnt over power the 5G signal. 2.4 has a slower stronger signal then 5 does but is the most common use wireless Frequency band for wireless devices including your wireless mouse so its also the most congested. But not all devices can connect to 5G so make sure you do not turn you 2.4 signal strength down too far as to not affect those legacy devices as well.

Don't do what I did, I bought a UAP-AC-LR to try, propped it up next to my ISP provided potato router, tested it and decided I need a second AP. I bought the second one along with the cabling I needed to mount both properly and when I mounted the first one on the ceiling it gave me internet right to end of my backyard and nearly to my road at the front. So basically that's all I needed for a long 4br home with 2 large living areas. I mounted the second one anyway and can now get good wifi across the road in my neighbours yard, overkill.

Lagendy nope, you will also need the router you already have or a brand new one from ubnt only setting you back 140£ for their consumer one, or if your into your networking reusing an old system with pfsense may be a possibility. If you chose to use your current router, simply plug the AP into the lan ports and disable the inbuilt WiFi and there you have it.

Alex do these really give up a roaming ability if you have more than one? Don't you have to manually connect to each AP as you move to different places of the home?

Matthew Laverock As long as you have a CloudKey (£70) it will link all the APs together creating one mesh network.

You don't need a CloudKey - you can run the software UniFi Controller for free.

Android and Apple will both switch to the AP with the highest signal normally as long as they have the same SSID AND password.

what is the difference between the channels? If you put it in 6 or 11
@bradbuildz4891
@bradbuildz4891 6 жыл бұрын
Basically its the frequency of which you broadcast your Wifi, and having it on a different channel means that you are not interfering with surrounding Wifi signals. However I would leave it auto unless you know what it is as it will automatically pick the best channel for you. :)

The more access points you have in an area that small the worse the performance will get as they will interfere with one another, in WiFi less is more so you would be better to use the minimalist amount of AP's possible.

Many people think the bottleneck is actually their router, when it can easily be their internet provider (the rate they chose), as it is in my case, living on an island with overall just bullshit internet speeds.
