Today I’m going to tell you about the Sony A6400 and help you decide whether it’s a good value. I think it’s one of the best Sony cameras on the market as far as features and value. I will discuss the A6400 sensor, processor, and autofocus for both photography and video. I’ll show you #sonya6400 tons of photo samples, and we’ll talk about dynamic range and low light performance (night shooting)
We’ll see how this new flip screen was implemented by Sony, and whether it was a good choice.
I will also include A6400 4K footage and several example of slow motion shot at 1080P 120 fps.
I’ll talk about other features like interval shooting, discuss the ergonomics of the #sony #a6400 as well as the battery life, viewfinder and some things that frustrated me about this camera.

Have been thinking about getting the a6400 and stumbled upon this video. The quality of this review is amazing! It’s so refreshing to see someone looking at this from a photography standpoint - the majority of videos I’ve seen have been from youtubers looking at this solely for vloggers. Thank you so much for making this!

Thank you so much for this in-depth Review, I was trying to find a suitable cam for my overhead drawing videos and I think this one is the best among all. It has all the features I need, like flip screen, HDMI out, Microphone jack, charging while recording and most importantly NO 30min limit for videos which is AWESOME!!!
@TechGearTalk

The lack of 30 minute recording limit is so big for artists! You can always record externally, but it's nice to be able to do that in-camera. I'm super glad the video was helpful and appreciate your kind words and support!

⭐️ Best price for the Sony aa6400: geni.us/sony-a6400body (affiliate) ⭐️ Kit used (for review) in video: geni.us/HaLIEb (affiliate) UPDATE: I have seen reports about the a6400 rates for both 360 and 410 shots depending on your settings. What's up everyone?! I hope this review of the Sony A6400 was helpful. Did you like it? I wasn’t sure I was going to like this camera but it’s a great value. The image quality is excellent, I love the no recording limit, and the autofocus is fantastic. As usual, I love the slow motion and appreciate this first attempt at a forward-facing screen (I wish there was an articulating screen). Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏

Hi. Simply put, you will not need a better camera than the a6400 for youtube. The autofocus is awesome, the image quality is fantastic and there is no recording limit. You're not moving the camera from what I saw, so there is no need for image stabilization. Shoot me a DM on Instagram and I can help you with settings.

Also there are extremely powerful image upscaling tools out there that could easily allow you to increase the resolution of the images taken from the camera if you need to print out something extremely large like a large bill board for example! Also the extremely detailed photos also contain enough data to make the upscaled images look extremely sharp without any noticeable defects! :)

Great review, I'm wondering if I should get 3 of these cameras. Right now I have the ea50uh, a 6500, and two FDR AX100'S. I bought these for specific gigs and everything right now is changing the where I don't need these specific cameras. What I need is matching cameras to shoot interview style and I was thinking I could get 2 or 3 of these 6400's and they might match up easy and good with my a6500 so I can just sell everything else and use my lenses. Otherwise I might sell everything and get three a7c's. What do you think? I could get twice as many of these 6400's for the price of those a7c's. Plus I may lose quite a bit switching to FE lenses. Right now I have a 35, 16, and 50 mm primes plus some others ... It would feel great starting over and stepping up my game if those a7c's are worth it. I mostly do event cinematography but I'm changing gears into doing more interview style work.

Thank you for this excellent review! I am looking for something not too complicated and easy to carry around. I bought a full DSLR years ago, which is way too heavy for me to lug around. After a series of point and shoot cameras I figured I really need to compromise and get something a bit heavier for more options. My current camera is a Canon G9X - which fits into my pocket but is just too limited for my purposes. I have to spend way too much time in photoshop in order to get the photos I like. Plus. My iPhone takes better photos than my camera. It looks like the Sony A 6400 might be the one for me!

Depends on if you value the extra 2mm of width or the extra 85mm of telephoto. I agree with @nathan Carrille that the 18-135mm is more versatile - but it depends on whether you’ll actually use that focal length. What will you photograph?
@godofhope

In places like mountains you will cry for 16mm (or even more) So having the 16-50, I mean a good one!!! is IMHO essential. It can be bought on eBay for very cheap. But you have to be lucky to get a good sharp one...

Yes, I understand that the Sony a6400 SERIES cameras are better than Micro Four Thirds. I did some milky way panos with a Micro Four Thirds, and the Sony is suppose to be better for Image Quality (so they say). Thus, this new exciting camera should be the ideal camera for astro if you have the right techniques. With the right prime lens any low light situation for video or milky way is very possible.
@kirostar12
@kirostar12 4 жыл бұрын
I suggest you buy a real Astro camera with a sensor cooling technology like ASI 1600 MC. In summertime to be able to cool -45C the camera sensor is a big benefit and much less noise on your astrophotos.

Ok, so I’ve been searching for this info literally everywhere and I’m glad that you mentioned it - you said that the a6400 can be powered while in use? Does that mean that I can use a micro-USB cable to power the camera while recording? I just ordered an a6400 along with a DC coupler because I was hard pressed when it came to finding this info, but I just want to ensure that I can film for an unlimited time on the camera without a DC coupler and using a micro-USB cable? What a through review, kudos to you for your dedication! I have a question: how well does it work for movies? I want to record in 24fps but a lot of cameras I’ve used have this stuttering that is pretty annoying. Is this one smoother when recording in 24fps?
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 4 жыл бұрын
It works great for movies. The stuttering is usually due to using a shutter speed that is too fast. Take a look at this video (it's for another camera but will break it down) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHXWXo2wl5Wjo6c Let me know if you have any questions

Hi. thanks for sharing the review. Recently i was so confused of choosing between Sony a6400 and Nikon Z50. I heard many of them said sony is abit more warmer, is this able to fixed? Which camera has better performance in night photography. One last question, is Z50 video quality is as good as A6400? I am still a newbie XD.

I love this review and you are so relaxing to listen to as well. Sounds like an all around decent guy. Anyway. Currently looking for a camera, mostly for video in wide angle. Is this still the one to get at the price point? I need clean HDMI as well. Canon have better or at least, more options for lenses, right? And better pricing too? What is the next step after the A6400?

hi, nice informative video. i've seen your fuji xt30 and canon 90d review as well... could you please let me know which one would be a best buy between these 3 cameras? Is it a wise decision to go with 90d dslr over mirrorless a6400 or xt30? which of these 3 are good for low light photography? could you please share your advise?

Thank you for the kind words. I prefer mirrorless cameras to DSLRs because of the advantages on the electronic viewfinder - especially when it comes to auto focus. If I was doing just photography, I would buy the X-T30.

Before I bought my 6400 I agonized over the lack of IBIS. However when I grab a camera it's always the 6400 over the 6500. I've had zero problems with the lack of IBIS even though 3 of my six lenses are not stabilized. The focus system, especially the EyeAf and tracking are so good.

I was actually surprised about the performance of the Sony A6400. I use it beside my Sony A9 on the Sony 100-400mm 4.5-5.6 for some Wildlife in case I need the extra reach. It is better IMO than using a Teleconverter. So far so good, the IQ is good enough in this case. And the Autofocus is super good. Well done, Sony.

I completely agree with you. The images are fantastic, and I prefer the APS-C sensor to a teleconverter as well for extra reach. I was not expecting to like it this much because of the price, but I think it's an absurd value.

Started my photography/videography journey on the Canon G7XII and have been using it for the past 2 years and am considering upgrading. 1. Is the image quality/sharpness of the a6400 much better than Canon G7XII ? Managed to find an offer while i'm travelling in Japan to get the A6400 with the 16-50mm kit lens as well as the 55-210mm for roughly USD $1,171. 2) Do you think this is worth it? Also how does the 55-210mm lens compare to the 18-135mm lens? 3 I am looking for a lightweight camera with 4k as well as good image quality and possibly cheap lens options, what brand/model would you recommend? Is there a lot of difference in terms of image quality between a full frame vs an apsc? Thank you for the help & sorry for the long post! Beginner here & am really looking to improve my photography/videography :-)

Hi Kenneth, thanks for the background info: 1. Yes, it's much better image quality 2. "Worth it" is hard to assess because I can't assign a value to the results for you. Lenses - depends on if it's your first lens, or an additional lens and what you like to shoot. 3. The "cheap lens options" is a problem. I would consider the a6400 with Sigma lenses. My favorite camera is this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nojCfolmfZp7n68

@iamwisdomsky
@iamwisdomsky 3 жыл бұрын
But it does include a micro-usb connector and you can just plug it into any phone chargers lying around in your house to charge. This actually makes sense because you only have 1 battery out of the box and there's no point in removing it from the camera to charge when you can just charge it directly via usb. You would only need to remove your battery to charge when you have multiple batteries, hence also the reason why the battery charging docks sold in the market normally have 2 slots and not 1. You'd rarely find third-party battery chargers with only 1 slot.

This video was exactly what I was looking for! I purchased the Canon M50 over the SL3 based on another video. I was thinking about returning/swapping it for this a6400 model, but based on this, I’ll stay put. The only reason for the hesitation was low light. It’s something I really want, for sure. Trying to make sense of features and take a decent photo has been intimidating, to say the least! Haha The trade off for ease of use(being a newb), I’m probably better off staying course with the M50. I GREATLY appreciate the info! Keep it up!

Tech Gear Talk I agree with the video - nothing is logically laid out. Settings should flow. If you’re setting a camera up for video it should start with format and data rate. It should flow to picture profile. Then focus settings - manual or auto or some combination of auto. Steadyshot or not? Then exposure. ISO, shutter and aperture. Then white balance (you want to be properly exposed for white balance). Finally audio levels. Whether you format the media card needs to be separate so you don’t go into autopilot and format the wrong card but it shouldn’t be buried on page 3 of the suitcase menu. I haven’t used the A73 much for stills. The review is correct in that once you have the camera set up it’s less of a problem - although I still find annoying things. Like turn on proxy recording in 4K and you lose focus peaking and zebras. Super annoying. Not because it’s a processor limitation (which it is) but because nothing tells you what’s wrong. You have to discover that for yourself. I think BMD has the best menu system.

My budget is around $1500 for everything. I’m thinking about getting the a6400 or the a6600. I was just wondering if it’s worth getting over the 6400? Or with my budget is the a6400 better for me? With the a6400 I can spend more on lenses, and other accessories for it. A6600 I feel like I can only probably get one good lens and that’s it. But if the a6600 is much better and worth the extra money I’d pad more for it.
