Correction, thanks to Vladimir Shvarts: I misspoke when I said the SL2/200d has 720p @ 120fps. That feature is only available on the M50. What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the Canon M50 and SL2 + sample footage and images is helpful. Did you like it? I love these cameras and think they are outstanding entry level options for both photography and video. Let me know what you think!! Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏

eh, it would have been more helpful if you actually vlogged with both and showed the differences. Don't get me wrong super helpful video with all the technical differences (i'm subscribed, not hating), but the thing you're missing is a real world example. Nobody is making videos of stationary objects. I've used both and these are the main differences: M50 The M50 has that digital stabilization which is JUST OK, it's good enough to where you can walk and talk into the camera or walk and show what a landscape is like - (if you're a travel vlogger this important) and have the video be somewhat stable. The SL2 however is mess. It's super shaky, you really can't walk and talk with that camera. Also the M50, while more stable it crops in a lot with stabilization on. So it's harder to get a wide angle look and have it be smooth and stable. SL2 The SL2 has higher quality video. It's looks like an 80D. The M50 looks like an Iphone. Both are good, just the SL2 is better. It also native access to all those amazing lenses like the 50mm and the 10-8mm. Making the Sl2 so affordable for the quality you get. Conclusion The M50 is smaller and the lenses are smaller which is great - It's the superior on the go travel camera. But the speed booster everyone talks about is expensive. People don't realize this. They think it's like a cheap adapter you can get at Walmart :) It's not. Also, it makes the M50 bigger, the point of the M50 is to be small. If you're doing sit down, talk into the camera videos, get the Sl2. If you want higher quality video, get the Sl2. If you want the most bang for your buck, get the Sl2. If you want something small, capable and somewhat stable - particularly if you're doing a lot of on the go, outdoor recording get the M50. I'm assuming anyone reading this, that you're a beginner. I ended up buying the SL2.
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, I super appreciate you taking the time to leave such thoughtful feedback. I agree with your points. If someone is willing to give up a few things (headphone jack, weather sealing, etc) the sl2 is a great 80d alternative. I did another video showing the image quality comparison. The reason for shooting static objects in that video is to keep the subject and lighting identical. Glad to have you as a contributing member of this community 🙏🏻

Before buying my M50 this year I watched several of your reviews on various cameras. Your reviews were tremendously helpful! For me, it came down to weight. I like hiking and can no longer lug around a lot of gear. Every ounce adds up. I decided the M50 along with a couple of lenses and my iPhone 12 Pro Max is all I can manage. I took some photos on a high country trail in Yosemite, and right out of the box I didn’t have any problem using the M50 in auto mode. I did get the extra batteries, thanks for the tip, I needed them! I’ll check out your user manual on the M50 again, and in a little while I’ll check on a zoom lens that won’t break my back. I’d like to get nice sharp close-ups of El Capitan and Half Dome. Thanks again for bringing some light into my photography confusion!

There are so (too) many ways. One of the easiest is to pull out and replace one eyepiece with an adapter that has some optics and connects to the camera without lens. Interesting comparison, Sagi. I have not used the SL2 but have to tell you it was your orig review back in May that got me started looking at the M50. I explored a little further and decided to order a used one, bundled with some accessories and lenses on Ebay. I have not regretted my purchase of the M50 and, in its small and light form function, it is just a perfect camera for hiking. When I first opened the pkg and looked at the M50, I took it out of the box and held it in my hand. When looking at the M50 in a video review, you don't realize just how small this body is. We're talking extremely small here, perfect for hiking. I've paired my M50 with Peak Design's Capture clip and shell, making it easy to attach to my front backpack strap and cover when raining. Perfect set up for trail use. The photos it takes are tack sharp, surprising for such a small camera and the hot shoe allows you to use the high end Canon speedlites, when necessary. If I had to fault the M50, it's the EVF which is great but it's also a hindrance, because while taking a series of photos your viewfinder and, in fact the LCD screen are blacked out momentarily by the last photo taken, hindering you from composing your next shot because you can't see what you are trying to photograph, until that last photo taken disappears from view. It's like someone is blocking the lens with something while you are trying to focus. Perhaps, there is a workaround for this or a way to disable last photo from displaying for a few seconds. You can still take a photo but just can't see what you are photographing. Other than this, I love the M50. As mentioned earlier, thx to your orig review of same I bit the bullet and bought one. The photos from it are amazing and have allowed me to place my Canon 7D, gen one, on the bookshelf, where it is now collecting dust. As mentioned in past replies I've made on your videos, I love them but hate them at the same time because they always make me want whatever it is you are reviewing, causing me to spend more money, once again. Darn your time. It's just a good thing for me that you are not posting videos daily. LOL.

Which camera between the Cannon 70D, 77D, SL2, 5d mkIII, and M50 do you recommend for portrait and low light photography? I occasionally do nature but it's pretty rare. I currently have a Tamron 16-300 F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PVD and a Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM. Video is not a huge concern as I am not a content creator. The M50 is a very good choice. Both cameras would work well in this case, but the M50 is even smaller and more portable which is such a bonus. It's much more likely that you'll have it with you because you can just throw it in your pocket and go. Hope that helps.

Nice video. I am more of an SLR guy, having only the original Canon M as a mirrorless. I recently acquired a used SL2 and put it in service on a tripod as my primary camera for product photography for my online selling business. I don't care about 24 megapixels, because I set it on one of the lower resolution settings that still look great on a computer screen and transfer faster through WiFi,, take up less space, and upload to my listings faster. One thing worth mentioning is that the SL2 works well with Canon's EOS Utility software, which allows me to take photos in Live View, and they appear almost right away in a directory I intend them to show up in on my computer. I know the original EOS M does not work with EOS Utility. Does the M50? I just don't understand the desire to connect a camera to my phone. I have zero interest in doing that, and have never wanted to do that. What am I missing? On the other hand, I really like connecting to my computer without a cord, and having used different Canon cameras with WiFi, I prefer EOS Utility to Canon Connect, though Canon Connect is pretty good, too. I also have the 77D and 80D, which I thought I was "wasting" using for my product photography, yet I really don't get out to shoot with those enough to "save" them for non-business use. The SL2 has proven to be the easiest to connect, and seems to be the least likely to unexpectedly disconnect. It is quite an upgrade from the SL1, though I don't like the kit lens (the f/4 version of the 18-55mm STM lens) as well as the earlier F/3,5 version because it does not focus as closely,. Were I to use the F/4 version, I'd need to switch to a macro lens far more often.

really enjoyed this video. Thank you for taking the time to make this, Q, what would be the wide angle lens you would choose for the M50. I have made the decision to start with the M50 for Vbloging. With the M50 lens adapter, isn't the whole canon line available? Thank you again for the good work.
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful. I'll start at the end, yes, you can use the whole line of canon EF/EF-S lenses with the adapter. I would start with the kit lens and then see how wide you want to go based on that. There is an 11-22mm which is super wide (but maybe it's too wide for you, depending on the situation). The 22mm f/2 is awesome and is also very fast. Even faster is the 32mm f/1.4, but that's not really wide angle. This is why I suggest you start with the kit lens so that you can see what focal length you like without spending a lot of money. (or go to a store and play with it). Hope that's helpful.

Hi! i want to ask about your opinion abt this. recently i'm a beginner photo/viceographer and do some small paid project with my EOS M. but i have a confidence problem with this camera due to its small and compact size that make me feel "not professional enough" to do the work. so right now i'm confused between this sl2 and m50 (my price range). actually i'm a bit leaning towards m50 due to its capability to record at 120fps eventho its only 720p, its okay for me cz upscale it to 1080 in post is still usable. and its possibilities to use a speed booster to have a "full frame" camera experience. but as you know, having a mirrorless again would definitely back to my previous problem with EOS M. soo maybe SL2 may be better. but M50 pros as i mentioned above are sooo tempting for me. could you give me your point of view on this? Many thanks!
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
I totally understand about the appearance of the camera and how it doesn’t “look professional”. The truth is, it’s not designed as a professional tool. But what’s most important to the client is the results. No one cares what camera you use if you do good work. Just like no one cares if you use a RED camera, if the results are terrible. You’ve already done paid work, was it a problem?

Hello. It's been many years since the 80D/77D came out, but I'm asking myself the same question. Now I have a Canon 600D, and I no longer lack its capabilities (of course 😅). I choose between 77D and M50. My main task is to shoot photos (I want to shoot commercials: portraits, custom family scenes, and some street photography). The video is most likely secondary (although I don’t know for sure). There is no money for a full frame yet. What do you recommend from these two devices? The bad ergonomics of the M50 and the lack of control buttons, as it is on the 77D, scares me. However, they tell me from everywhere: "2023, buy a mirrorless camera (they mean M50)" I want to point out that I am not going to invest in EF-M lenses. I have a fleet of EF/EF-s. What can you advise me? What can you advise me?

Great comparison and tutorial on both cameras. The M50 is the obvious winner. For $100 more and an adapter, you get a lot more camera in a smaller body. But, the Sl2 is not too far behind and as you said if money was an issue you could do 95% of what the M50 does with the Sl2. One big advantage of the mirrorless cameras is the ability to use vintage lenses with adapters.
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
Solid point, and in terms of value, I'm in complete agreement. Depending on the price difference (in different locations) you're looking at an extra 100 plus the adapter is right under 200. That's going to be a big deal for a lot of users. But if you're making a purchase for the future (and I hope people are) it's definitely something I would look at. What are you shooting with?
@peacepantherproductions4 жыл бұрын
Thank you- I am leaning towards the SL2 because of affordability and I don’t really want to shoot video in 4K if the auto focus isn’t great in the m50, plus I don’t want to deal with 4K video all over the place. Also I plan to use a gimbal. So in 1080 the sl2 can do 60fps? I want to be able to do slow motion. Also I hear the Chicago accent and the outdoor shots looked like my hometown, Evanston.. ! thank you for a thorough review!
