What's up everyone?! I hope this review of the Canon G1 X MKIII is helpful. Did you like it? Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. you mentioned that the 1inch sensor model lens is faster lens, but doesn't the apsc sensor compensates for this on the g1xmiii ? how is the image quality compared to average apsc with lenses, or phrasing it differently, how is the quality of the lens attached to it ? thanks

Your reviews are always spot on and provide a fair, unbiased and knowledgeable assessment of the camera in question. The only disadvantages of the G1X Mark 3 (one from a photographic point of view and the other as a cash strapped consumer!) ) would be the limited aperture and the price! At the time of your review, it would have been around $1200 new. Now, however, looking on e-bay, I have seen a few examples not much over £500-700 (or $678-950 appx)-cheaper if sourced from the States! That would make it a viable alternative to the excellent Canon M50 now. As you say, no camera gives you everything, but the focal length here is a very useful one, and the image stabiliser would be very useful, especially with the slow lens in lower light and ability to negate the use of high ISOs. by using a slower shutter speed for static subjects. And at least HD video would be nice and steady hand held! Many expensive DSLRs/Mirrorless cameras don't have that-anything that gives you confidence in your camera will make you use it more. Also, the build quality and element of weather sealing gives the user the user extra reassurance. So even if you can't change lenses, the G1X 3 has so much going for it and you can't ask much more of that from a small camera with an APSC sensor. Thumbs up-just lower the price in the January Sales, Canon :)

An apsc point and shoot camera with a built in nd filter, zoom toggle, weather sealing, exposure comp dial, leaf shutter and c1,c2 on the mode dial was what I wanted. I don't get why everyone thinks it's supposed to compete with mirrorless instead of point and shoot apsc cameras like the popular fujifilm x100f or Ricoh GR II. X100f users don't even use the mic input.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
That's a really strong argument. Those are outstanding features. I think a lot of people may not understand the value of some of those features over something as simple as an external mic input and so on the surface they may think it doesn't compare. Also, the price (at least when it was released) was somewhat high. Do you own this camera?

Would you say this is between the G5x and M5, I have both and as much as I like the G5x I always feel the image is not the greatest, the M5 of course with the kit 15-45 is basically this camera. Is this camera a little bigger than the G5x? or is it the same. Im thinking of retiring my G5x for this one. I still want the hot shoe and I think the APC is going to give me the quality of the M5 that I prefer but with portability of the G5x. Just wondering if I should wait as this is now an old camera I wonder if Canon will update it. I was also looking at the G3x but that now seems discontinued and no sign of G3x2 from Canon.

Hi, I bought a Fuji X-E3 recently (together with XF18mm f2.0, XF27mm f2.8 and XF50mm f2.0) because I really wanted to try the Fuji ecosystem after hearing a lot of good things about it (as a JPEG shooter, film simulations and all the possibilities to tweak the JPEGs looked very appealing to me). I chose the X-E3 for budget and size reasons… as a happy owner of a Sony RX10 mk4, I was looking for something smaller which was performing better in low light/bokeh. I sold my RX100 mk5 to buy the Fuji. I never enjoyed its ergonomics… In the past I’ve also had some other cameras: Canon G1X Mk1 & Mk2, and a Sony A6500. As you can see, I am some kind of non-interchangeable lens lover, and it is still the case. Fuji X-E3 was my second attempt to the ILC world (after the A6500) and I am not enjoying it too much. But what worries me even more, I am not enjoying the X-E3… Autofocus is not good at all, at least in medium-low light (maybe on a sunny day it is), or I am not being able to make it work. In summary, I am thinking on selling my Fuji kit and buy a compact zoom camera. As I’ve seen you are/have been a Fuji owner, and also have owned many compact cameras, I would like your advice on which compact camera to buy. There are my priorities: - Good/reliable autofocus (I am more a photographer than video shooter, but I do occasionally family videos) - Compact size (it doesn’t have to be a very small camera, but for sure not a DSLR-like, as I already have a fantastic RX10 mk4 there) - Good low light performance - Bright zoom lens (I’ve learnt I don’t like a fix lens when using my Fuji primes) These are the options I am considering: - Canon G1X Mk3 (big sensor, dual pixel, manual controls) - Canon G5X (longer focal range, bright lens) - Panasonic LX100 Mk2 (big sensor, manual controls, bright lens) - Panasonic LX10/15 (bright lens, manual controls) Which would be your pick between these 4? Any other better option?

I am a keen amateur photographer, and very rarely take videos. I often use SLRs, but I like to use a high-end compact for travel and to carry when I’m out walking and not primarily going out to photograph. My key requirements are a reasonable zoom range, a reasonable size sensor (i.e. much bigger than the sensor on an iPhone) and the ability to shoot jpeg and raw simultaneously. As an indication with respect to zoom range, on a full frame SLR I usually use a 24-105 mm lens, and quite often end up at the 105 mm end when taking pictures. Currently I have a G1X Mk 2, and it has a nice balance of size, zoom range and image quality. What would make it better would be firstly manual zoom, rather than power zoom, secondly a built in EVF, and thirdly moving the WiFi button where I can’t press it accidentally. Zooming by pressing buttons is always slower than turning a zoom ring, and it’s difficult to zoom precisely. I have added the external EVF to my camera, but it makes the camera considerably bigger than it would need to be with a built-in EVF. Also, it means that I can’t use an external flash. The Mk 3 would give me my second desire, a built-in EVF. But when going from the Mk 2 to the Mk 3, they have increased the sensor size, so they have had to reduce the zoom range to avoid having to have a bigger and heavier lens. However the sensor on the Mk 2 is not much smaller than APS-C, and gives very good results, especially when taking raw and post-processing the images in Lightroom. The Mk 2’s zoom range of about 24-120 mm (35 mm equivalent) is a very nice one which covers many photo-taking opportunities. In contrast the Mk 3 only goes to 70 mm, which is nowhere near enough. I take a lot of images more zoomed in than that. So if my G1X Mk 2 was broken, there is no way I would replace it with the Mk 3. In my opinion they have gone from a nice camera that does most of what I want from my travel camera to one that just can’t cut it. The lack of zoom to more than 100 mm (35 mm equivalent) is a dealbreaker.

Hi Jerry, first, thank you for watching. I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and insight. I can see exactly what you're saying and why you would make that decision based on your requirements. I like that you've identified what's important to you (for this specific type of camera/use) and how that is guiding your decision. Better focal range (and for me, an external mic input) would have helped with the MK 3. What SLRs are you using?
@jerry23576 жыл бұрын
My main camera is a Canon 5D Mk 3, with a variety of lenses, but I also use a 7D Mk 2 with a 100-400 mm lens for bird photography (crop sensor to give more magnification).By the way, I have also travelled with the 5D Mk 3 and just the 24-105 mm lens, and that is fine for most of what I want to do when I'm on holiday. But with a charger and a flash it takes up quite a lot of room in my daysack (which is what I carry on if I'm checking a larger bag for clothes etc for a holiday of a week or more). The G1X Mk 2 is small and light enough to include if I'm travelling on hand baggage only, and if I'm planning to do a fair amount of walking it saves space and weight in my daysack. There is only a little compromise on picture quality, too. A bonus of using the compact camera is that people think you're just a tourist taking snaps, but in fact you have complete creative control. In terms of using the camera, the compact is quite a bit slower than the DSLR (focussing is not as fast and reliable, the exposure controls are not as intuitive, zooming is slower, and continuous shooting is slower). But most of what I photograph on holiday are landscapes, buildings and village/city scapes, observed details etc, and these don't require too much speed. The size and weight of the DSLR is nicer in the hand, but heavier on the neck. I prefer the ease of setting the compact camera for autobracketing, because setting autobracket will simultaneously set the camera to taking three consecutive shots by holding down the shutter release, whereas the DSLR needs autobracketing to be set on the menu, followed by setting the drive to continuous, i.e. two actions. (I sometimes autobracket for high contrast scenes to give me the option of processing via HDR, but actually I usually get better results in Lightroom by carefully selecting one of the three images to start from and then playing with the shadows and highlights).

When you really check how far the lens with lens cap protrudes when the Canon G1X Mark III is turned off, and when you know exactly where the battery is located, then you realize that they could have build a much bigger grip to fit a battery with a LOT of battery life in that camera, without making it much bulkier. I mean, who would pack any rather pricey compact camera without a lens cap on the lens, so, in this case, the camera is as bulky as its lens with lens cap protrudes. On top of that the Canon NB-13L is a rather old model of a rechargeable battery pack (like 4 years or even more), and there have been quite some improvements in battery technology since the 1st start of this model of Canon batteries. I have a Canon G7X that I intended to use for underwater photography with the same Canon NB-13L battery model, and that I bought with the Canon waterproof casing, but I quickly found out how limited it was (ultra short battery life, screen just not bright enough for underwater shooting, etc..., etc... ) ... in short, impossible to use for underwater photography. So I got a professional casing for my Sony A7 II to do underwater photography with a lot of satisfaction (the Sony A7 II doesn't have an extremely long battery life, but it's way way better than the Canon G7X for the job), and I wound up only using the Canon G7X with its casing on the kayak with my son, or at the beach, or just as a small and cheap (although it was expensive for what it really was) point & shoot camera to stuff in my pocket, and that's pretty much about it. Quite frankly it all looks to me as the new Canon G1X Mark III is just another EXPENSIVE TOY. And, as I'm not the kind to jump on every "new thing" shat by the industry, I just wait until something really good and competitive is being produced.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
It would have been great if this camera had better battery life. I would definitely say you need an extra battery (or even two if you're out all day). The A7 II is an outstanding camera. Do you have the G7X original or the MKII

I like the idea of this camera. I got it in 2022… but it’s is terribly uncomfortable to hold and also something which no reviewer mentions is how cameras feel when they dangle around your neck/waist area… and this as well as most slr style viewfinder design-particular cameras is awful. It’s a huge setback for this as a lightweight and compact sort of camera… the problem is that the evf protrudes and digs into your skin because the neck strap joints are for some reason placed on the front of the camera as opposed to the sides, so, the protruding evf does this sort of ice pick action on your torso when you walk about. Had this camera had a rangefinder style layout and the neck strap joins were placed properly, it would be absolute perfection and I wouldn’t leave it at home 😂

Nice one! (I mean the review not the cam :) without reading a lot I'd rather lean to the new Sony Rx100V - right? For the nice slowmo options alone.... however I got the GH5 last week and totally love it. nice to see you've used a clickable TOC - which I'm sure your viewers will enjoy. However: you can make life easier for you: just type the timecode in the description and youtube will make it clickable. I don't exactly know what Canon is doing with this camera. RX100V would work if you don't need an articulating screen, and if you don't the smaller sensor and lack of DP AF. RX100V has a faster lens and slow-mo like you mentioned. Re: Timestamp - NO WAY!!!! That is awesome. Going to change it right now!! Thanks so much Mario!!
@Rcschim6 жыл бұрын
ha, glad I could help out with the timestamp. It's really convenient. The only thing even nicer would be if we could have a nice clickable, easy to write, TOC in the screen directly. Like your nice animated TOC in the video - it should be able to make it clickable there... But I dont think that works with cards (max 5) or maybe with annotations....
@Rcschim6 жыл бұрын
yes, DP AF ist a killer. That's the only thing that is missing on something like a GH5. But their not so good AF is better now with Firmware 2.3 - I think they got the max out of the contrast AF. greets and happy weekend, Mario
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
Clickable in the video would be cool but YT disabled annotations so :( I need to pick up a GH5 and play around with it for sure. Knowing that you have one and love it is a bonus, plus seeing that they upgrade the firmware is a positive.

yep, I watched your sony camcorder review (ax700?) I think or was it the sony rx100? so I had sony in mind maybe because of autofocus and higher FPS in slowmo - but then I saw that all the quality points go to GH5 in that pricerange. and I'm not even considering to actually use the 10bit option and 400mbit video bitrate :) and for slomo? the 1000fps from sony are in ugly resolution. 180fps on GH5 are in true HD and look really smooth!

Why do people call these point and click when in full manual mode you have as much control as a DSLR, likewise you can use a DSLR in point and click mode? I've got a G1X mk1 which I'm very fond of. I use a Fuji XT-1 for more demanding work which produces really great images. I've been looking at the G1X mk2 on Ebay but finding it hard to love. The Mk3 looks like an exercise in trying to cram an oversize sensor into a compact body but then runs into inevitable compromises with the lens design. I'll keep my eye on Ebay prices because I'd quite like to try one of these. The Panasonic LX-100 is a great camera to consider too.

If it were me, I would go with this camera because it’s the largest sensor and offers outstanding autofocus and color. As with all of these, get an extra battery or a usb charger if you plan on shooting a lot. This may not be an issue for you if you’re not shooting video.

Great video, Sagi! The price point is way too high on this camera. For that price, I’d expect 4K, 120 FPS, and few other features.

Yes, yes, yes. I just wonder that exactly is going on here. I can get a G7X MK II AND an M50 for this price. Or just go another direction like a Sony A6500 and get 4k and 120. I would love to know how sales are going for this camera.

You can’t compare aperture directly on camera of different sensor size, just like focal length. Handphones have aperture at sub f2.0, but in reality their depth of field is like f8 in equivalent.
@TechGearTalk5 жыл бұрын
That is absolutely true as long as the focus distance is the same. Thanks so much for pointing that out, I will definitely remember mention that moving ahead. Appreciate you taking the time 🙏

Really appreciate your reviews! I was getting fired up about the G1 X until I heard the price 😆 I'd rather get the SL2 with a Sigma lens. The G7 X II is more compelling considering the price difference and the faster aperture on the G7. Overall the G1 feels overpriced without many important features.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Joey, I really appreciate the input. The Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 is my favorite lens at any price - period, end of story. This camera is a little hard to justify. It has a larger sensor than the G7XMKII, but it's a lot more expensive, has a slower lens. What do you use now?
@joserobertocastellon6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying! I currently only have my iPhone 7 Plus as my camera. I've been making videos using that and I really enjoy taking photos too. I'm always experimenting getting the most out of it. Friends and family seem to really like what I do as I'm constantly asked to take their photos and videos at events. I'm doing some side hustle to save up for a proper camera so in the mean time I am looking around trying to decide on which camera to buy first. If I could have my way, I'd get the 80D along with the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8, but starting from scratch means I might have to get the SL2 with the kit lens and let it pay for it's future upgrades.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
That's a smart plan. Get something, use it to make money, then upgrade! I also have the iPhone 7 Plus. It's not a bad camera, but I may have to try some other phones soon.

Greetings, Tech Gear Talk! As a Fujifilm X-T3 landscape and product photographer, I am extremely pleased with the image quality I get from this camera, combined with the stellar, sharp Fujinon XF optics. However, I am researching a small, light "travel camera", as I don't want to expose my X-T3 system to the vagaries of landscape photography in a beach/ocean setting. For that very limited, occasional use, I was considering such cameras as this Canon G1X Mark III, Panasonic Lumix LX100 II, or Sony RX100V. My MAIN criteria are image SHARPNESS and detail retention, and ability to retain such detail when possibly printed to 20x24". Plus, I'd like to keep total budget to around $1000. And, FYI, I'm a 100% stills guy, so don't shoot video. Based on this, which system would you recommend for maximum sharpness/compact form factor? Thank you!
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
First, X-T3 is my favorite mirrorless camera so far. The issue is going to be the comparison right? None of these will be as good, but based on your comment I know you’re aware of the shifted baseline. I would go with the g1x mkiii Beyond the image quality there are actual functional advantages. Touch screen. Fully articulating screen (I miss this every time I don’t have it). I didn’t mention in this video but a built in ND filter is just awesome to have. Thoughts?
@stevelink216 жыл бұрын
@@TechGearTalk Thank you for your detailed reply! Actually, I was seriously considering this G1X mark III, UNTIL I read a review (possibly DPreview) that mentioned that the lens was a bit "soft" at the wide focal length. Now, as . landscape/product photographer, I would be using this mainly at the wide end, and as I am obsessed with sharpness and image detail, that review kind of put me off a bit. So, other considerations would now be the Sony a6300, Canon G5X, or Sony RX100 III. Any further comments would be greatly appreciated! Regards, Steve
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, I do not have first-hand experience with those three, but I can tell you the a6500 is incredible. I think the main upgrades there were for video and continuous af so I would believe the a6300 would provide very similar results. Again, I have not personally shot with it, just sharing what I believe.
@stevelink216 жыл бұрын
@@TechGearTalk Excellent! OK, as I don't shoot video, I would be leaning towards the Sony a6300, and as I shoot mainly tripod-mounted, IBIS is also of little concern for me. (Although for the purposes of "travel photography that this camera would be used for, I think I would shoot more hand-held than usual.) One major question if I may...What's your opinion of the image quality (sharpness, particularly at the wide end) of the "Kit" Sony 16-55 PZ lens? Realizing my max budget of about $1,000 for this kit, IF the kit lens is inadequate, would you recommend any other Sony wide lenses for the a6300? (I know nothing about the Sony lens system, as I shoot the Fujifilm X-System exclusively.) Thanks again sir!
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
Ok, so honestly, if I were you, I'd get another Fuji so I can re-use my lenses. Sony lenses are $$$ The kit lens is the one I used on the A6500 review and it was very good (IMO). I'm also not a pixel-peepers, lol. If the image looks good, I'm cool with it. Also, again, depends on what you plan on doing with these images.

I'm in the market for new camera because I was disappointed by the camera quality of my phone. I want to use it when I'm out hiking and e.g. in restaurants with lowlight. I do also have a very noisy old digital ixus 870 IS, which is hopeless in lowlight.

btw isn't the g1x mk3 dust and splashproof? I thought it was but am confused now by your reply.
@TechGearTalk6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry if I confused you, it is dust and water resistant. I was just saying that at this price point, if you're not getting that from a compact camera, then I don't know what the manufacturer is doing.

Can I put it in my pants pocket. I plan to take pictures in the Bronx where I used to live. and they will rob you if they so much as see your camera. Let's say baggy jeans because it is hard for any camera to fit in tight jeans. Or wearing slacks, which usually have roomy pockets.
@OttosTheName3 жыл бұрын
I think it's 5.1 cm thick or 2 inches. It's a little bulky but in saggy pants should be doable. It's probably a bit too big to take with you every day even if you don't know if you're going to use it. You'll definitely notice it's there. You might prefer a ricoh griii or fujifilm xf10 (fixed lens...)
