@@chrisg6091 You're missing my point. I know this isn't for everybody, but if you don't care to understand your system, there are better alternatives in point release distros such as ubuntu, mint, popos, etc. If you're committing to a rolling release distro, why not do it properly and learn how to fix it when something inevitably breaks or requires manual intervention? If you don't want to fix your system, then rolling release isn't for you, and that's okay.
@user-he4ef9br7z2 жыл бұрын
@@timidgoldfish Stable distros are bloated and require huge updates every few months. Smaller incremental updates over time lead to a more consistent experience. Which is why Manjaro is so nice. It isn't so bleeding edge that you spend half of your timing fixing stuff and isn't stable so that you spend hours removing bloat and reconfiguring every time a new release drops in. The semi rolling model is best for people who just want to work on their computer and switch it off instead of wasting time.
@timidgoldfish2 жыл бұрын
@@user-he4ef9br7z If someone is too lazy to configure their own system or fix it when it breaks, I think "bloat" is the least of their worries. If you just want a stable desktop experience, LTS distros work just fine and stay supported for a long time. Plus, when you say removing bloat and re-configuring, it sounds more like something an enthusiast would do, which leads back to my point. If you want a good experience tinkering with your system then might as well sink a few hours into installing arch at least once to understand how some of the core components are put together. And just from personal experience, I've had Manjaro break on me a few times in the past.
@user-he4ef9br7z2 жыл бұрын
@@timidgoldfish LTS distributions have their own issues. Firstly it'll be a pain to switch when the new one is released. On top of that they might lack more recent software and patches one might require. Manjaro will of course break, not nearly as often as Arch, at least in my experience. Configuring the work environment is hardly something confined to enthusiasts. Configuring is essential if one intends to be maximally efficient in their actual work. Most people won't find any use playing with config files all day, but those who configure it once and add a line or two every now and then have much to gain. Pretty much everybody agrees a bloated system is bad, regardless of how much time one spends on their computer no one wants things on their computer that they'll never use. People who want to spend less time on their system aren't necessarily lazy, it's just that they've got other work to do. At the end of the day, a computer is a tool, not a toy. If configuring your workflow gets in the way of actual work then that is a veritable waste of time. I won't say unstable distros are of no value. They are the perfect choice for people who would benefit from understanding more about their system, sysadmins, programmers (although from what I have seen professionals tend to use Ubuntu if they use Linux at all), or technology publishers (youtubers etc.), but the vast majority of people don't fall in those categories.

It's just about reading a bit to understand the process, but I totally understand that not everybody wants to do that. Pd: Arch can as stable as any other distro, it just depends on how you are using it and the knowledge you have to maintain it; even so, we've got Timeshift if something happens to go wrong, which is unlikely, or to tinker whatever you want.

@@jesuscastro7314 I'm sure Elon Musk & Geoff Bezos have memorised the arcane details of hand installing Arch Linux from scratch too... There comes a time in your life when you learn to put a value on your time.

@@chrisg6091 I don't think they wouldn't even bother to learn Linux and if they did, they'd use something like Debian if we are talking about saving time. These "built from scratch" distros are for people willing to learn how their OS and computer work. If you don't have the time and any wish to do that, then it's fine for you; use whatever fits your needs. That's what GNU/Linux is about: diversity and freedom.

I recently switched over to Endeavor after using Manjaro and Fedora KDE for a few years due to those distros feeling like the slowed down a lot. Come to find out that it was KDE that was just slow as Endeavor started to do the same so I switched out KDE for Cinnamon without reinstalling. Probably gonna stay on Cinnamon at least until Ubuntu 24.04 or Fedora 40 comes out. I may even run the Fedora Cinnamon spin definitely staying away from KDE until I can get an SSD for my rig. Some reason KDE works fine on my laptop that has an SSD but gets sluggish on my main more powerful desktop that just has a HDD. I may end up just keeping this Endeavor distro installed on my desktop and just put Fedora 40 or Ubuntu 24.04 on that laptop. I can't really use rolling distros on the laptop as that laptop may be in a drawer unused for months and I dont wanna have to troubleshoot errors for when 800+ updates fail to install.

My current Distro hops: Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Pop Os, Manjaro, Arch, Endeavor, and now back in Arch again. Each have their pros and cons. Arch draws me in the most for a reason I can not explain. I'm pretty sure I'll never touch Gentoo or Linux from Scratch. ( or if I do, it'll only be for learning purposes, not to daily drive it ).

I used to use Manjaro but as soon as they removed AUR (query/browse) support from Pamac GUI it became useless. I don't get it why they removed such huge feature. So I changed my repos, did some other tinkering & with a help of a script I turned my Manjaro into vanilla Arch & installed yay As far as now, it's working completely fine & I'm currently commenting from that Arch machine

removed AUR browse? They just made it a little difficult to reduce the stress on aur servers . You just have to click AUR tab

How is arch GUI installer compared with Manjaro and Endeavor
@elizabeththompson44242 жыл бұрын
last try with Manjaro there was an issue with the system password, the GUI package manager would NOT work recently ran the EndeavourOS ISO and it mucked with my Mint grub, update-grub fixed things but WOW 😳 that caused me some distress but can you imagine someone with less experience... so ALL my Arch adventures have ended badly, alway back to Mint Mate... maybe if I could afford another laptop, or better yet a desktop with internet, but I just can't afford that and with the food prices rocketing 💲🚀🌕

I'm far more into quality of life options these days for my distro. Almost no distro is hard to install these days, so that doesn't even figure into my decision. My experience with Manjaro was less than impressive. I appreciated the up-to-date software, but it didn't really feel like a fully baked distribution with a team behind it, like Mint, for example. My patience for tweaking isn't what it used to be, so I'm more focused on finding a balanced distro.

You know I figured that both are Arch based and linux drivers are handled automatically on both so might as well try to learn something new, get the less bloated one and try out Endeavour. Boy was I wrong ... Manjaro SOMEHOW has much better performance just using the desktop (same DE), not stuttering not slow, just smooth whereas Endeavour was not good. I don't know what's different but SOMETHING is.

I don't like yay because it installs go, and I'm not a user of that programming language. I prefer pikaur which is based on python. The downside is when python version changes (i.e. from 3.10 to 3.11) that you have to rebuild it with makepkg...
