What Nickelodeon Slime Is Made Of - According To 'Double Dare' Host Marc Summers

Any kid who watched Nickelodeon in the '90s knows that it was all about the green slime. Marc Summers, host of "Double Dare" and "What Would You Do?" explains what it was actually made out of. A new documentary about Summers' life and career comes out later this year called "On Your Marc," and you can check out our full interview with him about his time on "Double Dare." Following is a transcript of the video:
Hi there. My name is Marc Summers.
“On your mark. Get Set. Go!”
You may know me from "What Would You Do?"
"I'm Mark Summers, and I wanna know how far you’ll go."
Slime gets identified with "Double Dare" a lot, and then again on "What Would You Do?" But it actually started on a show called "You Can't Do That on Television." What happened was, if you said the words, "I don't know," you would get slimed.
You know, it's weird. Slime is hot again. And there's all these recipes online that have nothing to do with what we used as real slime. It started off as vanilla pudding, apple sauce, green food coloring, and a little oatmeal. And that was our slime, and the consistency of that was far better than the stuff that I see today. I don't know what it is.
Did I ever get slimed? Oh yes. Numerous times.
Initially, on the first 65 episodes, I didn't get messy at all. And then the producers came to me and said, "Uh, you know, you gotta get a little messy." So the next thing I know, all the kids are trying to trash me with either slime or pies.
And you know some days I'd look like a Smurf. I'd be head to toe with blue whipped cream, blue kind of icing, whatever was on the course.
So yes, it was an occupational hazard in some ways, but it was a great way to make a living.

I was on Nickelodeon when I was twelve and I got slimmed. It was cold and smooth. It had the consistency of Elmer's glue. Not chunky like it was here. The messed up thing was they wouldn't give me a towel and I had to go on and talk to the host while I was freezing my ass off in that cold studio.

The 90s in general had a weird obsession with slime and ooze. There were literally toys that were nothing but that, gak, silly putty, slimer drinks, Ninja turtles slime pies, Ooze from the Power Rangers movie, slime in Ghostbusters 2, Ninja Turtles 2 Secret of the Ooze, everything Nickelodeon, Sonic Spinball's sewer level, actually a lot of games had weird slime stuff.

Simple enough for the stuff I use at events. It's one of a selection of industrial food thickeners, non-toxic paint colouring (the powder you'd mix for kids to paint at kindergarten) and water. The most famous and Nick-like thickener I know of, is called Natrosol. Why people felt the need to put actual bloody food ingredients in it, I don't know.

One of the alternatives to this recipe, which Nickelodeon also uses it just water and an industrial food thickener, of which there are a few to choose from, depending on the texture, and a coloring agent that doesn't stain as much as off the shelf food coloring. Methylcellulose for example will give you very viscous, almost snot like slime, and if you don't mix it just right you'll get little clumps here and there. The benefit of this mix is that it's non toxic, doesn't have any major allergens in it, and won't smell after a few minutes under hot lights. It's also super easy to clean up. Just dilute with more water. Most clothes will survive just fine if you rinse them before they dry, so you can get multiple takes out of expensive costumes.

"I don't know how to make that slime. You didn't give me the measurements on how to make it with its ingredients." *one second later* "Oh shit!" *I just got smiled for saying the words "I don't know"* "Damn. What I SHOULD have said was "I'm not SURE how to make that slime.""
