The part where you can't form new memories is so real. I've experienced that to extreme degrees. In school, I remember being perfectly able to grasp every piece of material we were taught, but without being able to remember it for extended periods of time. I would only be able to remember a few things, then the rest would go down the drain. It was exhausting. I needed to work way harder than necessary, but I was of course too exhausted to put in all the work needed to keep retaining all the information I kept forgetting. This was also a huge problem when I started my first part-time job. Mind you, it was in a pharmacy, so there was a lot of information to take in. I would constantly be told how to do certain things and forget in the next second. It was terrible having to ask for help again and again. Then I told my boss about how I slept very little and she encouraged me to go to the doctor. I was actually sleeping so little that I was at the point where I would wake up feeling "normal" after 3-4 hours of sleep (not good). I was seriously mimicking ADHD symptoms, hell, even dementia. I was tired, demotivated, discouraged, clumsy, impulsive, unaware and absent-minded. But it was my normal and I didn't think about it. I was a child/teenager and my knowledge of the effects of sleep deprivation was highly limited, up until the age of 17-18 when I started reading about it.

Then my lungs went through a cleansing process (over five years). My sleep dramatically improved. And depression totally disappeared. With clean lungs, I breathe in so much that I feel like being outdoors a lot. In my opinion, good clean lungs are critical in getting good sleep, and driving away depression.

I literally felt numb , dizzy , depressed , angry , suicidal and had murderous thoughts as well, I began hallucinating after 36 or so hours without sleep , pretty terrifying all these experiences, all of that combined with social isolation and social anxiety literally made me low-functioning and even getting up from a chair felt hard. No one was there to help me at the time, I didn't know how bad was that and it definitely took a toll on both my mental and physical health, fortunately now I'm much better and almost back to normal and I don't pull all nighters anymore.

I complained about being extremely tired all the time to my doctor several times but they blamed it on my medicine. When I say extreme, that’s really an understatement. I dosed off constantly, even on hard plastic chairs. Nothing I did helped. Finally my doctor agreed to do a sleep study. I was told I shouldn’t be alive, that’s how bad it was. I stopped breathing 150x per hour. That’s 5x more than what they consider severe. To make matters worse my file was misplaced when it was supposed to be expedited and it was another six months before they finally got back to me. I sure hope that it doesn’t effect me later in life. Watching this video scared me a bit. I’m getting better sleep today and my central sleep apnea is under control. Brain signals are struggling in other areas yet but not so much with sleep. I have a lot of family history of heart problems too. Both my parents died from heart failure and had heart problems, my maternal grandpa died of a heart attack and my fraternal grandma had heart problems. I feel like I’m doomed after watching this and knowing what I’ve learned from doctors. I’m not even 40 yet.😢

I remember being in navy basic training and somewhere around the 36 hour mark of no sleep I would start going into a “deep sleep” and have a dream that would all last a second or less, then snap myself awake, only to “fall asleep” again for a split second. This was at any point in the day no matter what I was doing and I couldn’t control it.

Hello, I‘m a person with severe sleeping disorder. I started to skip sleep when I was in 5th grade or about 11 years old. My parents did everything they could to get me sleeping, and once they thought I was sleeping, I would do literally anything to keep myself awake. I know now that it’s a kind of drug for me, my brain or myself as you will, enjoys being ‘drunk’ by the lack of sleep. It’s an addiction and a way for me to flee from depressiv thoughts. And maybe, one day I will manage to get it all together. But today I nearly collapsed. In a normal week I sleep about 1,5 to 2 hours per night, or even less. I’m gonna be 20 years old this summer. Wish me luck changing it forever.

Quick Answers to the questions asked: Luckily I do not lose hair, but I heard of people with similar sleeping disorders that do lose hair. Managing my life is really hard because I tend to forget a lot of things and therefore I have to keep a tightly filled agenda. Other than that it’s basically normal despite the fact that I’m “awake” - more like half consciously - most of the time. Indeed I have made some progress since 3 months ago: I learned more about the importance of sleep and on how to acquire healthy sleeping habits. But it’s still a long way to go, comparable to quit smoking.

I am pretty comfortable sleeping just a few hours a night, and have done so for most of the last ten years. For reasons I won’t get into, I go a few days without sleeping at all on a somewhat regular basis. My record is right around 100 hours, and the warning signs we’re told to look out for are very real. Inability to focus or make new short term memories are two of the biggest issues I’ve encountered. I’ll forget what I was doing ten mins ago, or how my day began. Physically, I usually do ok, but I definitely get hallucinations a couple days in. Nothing major. Just movement from stationary objects, or patterns that swirl like a bad acid trip. For me, the biggest concern I have is with regulating my emotions. After 50 or so hours with no sleep, I’m irritable, a little nervous, and get really sad about things that I’d normally handle pretty well. It’s funny, because I can recognize that I’m not thinking straight or making good decisions, but I can’t actually do anything about it.

Yes, that's correct. Lack of sleep is not good. However, too much of sleeping is not good either. So, there should be a balance. We shouldn't sleep too much and shouldn't sleep too little, just get enough sleep. But sadly, sometimes there are situations where we can't sleep and need to be awake for some time. For example if we are preparing for exams or doing a school project, we stay up late. And there is also a condition called insomnia. Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes it hard to sleep. It can also be caused by phones. Mobile phones can cause insomnia. I'm sure you are wondering how can mobile phones cause insomnia? Well, the blue light from the phone can suppress production of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin, which makes it hard to sleep. So, keep your mobile phone away before going to bed. Fortunately, mobile phone is not the only cause of insomnia.

I went 13 days without sleep one time, and I would not recommend it to anyone. Didn't know at the time that there was black mold in the wall next to my bed, and being exposed to it was making it next to impossible to breathe (a situation that somehow went on for almost five years, by the way, and nobody I went to see could figure out what was wrong with me.) I regularly went 5-7 days without sleeping at all, and usually when I did sleep, it was for less than three hours. That went on for years. Choking on your own lungs all night every night for years does something to ya, as does missing out on many hundreds of hours of sleep, and I've never been the same, even after moving somewhere else. It's like my body and brain are afraid of falling asleep perpetually, no matter how tired I get. It's so bad that, one time in the ER, they tried to put me under general anesthesia, and it couldn't knock me out. To this day, I'm lucky to sleep for a couple hours twice a week. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. The moral of the story is, cherish your sleep, no matter how little you get, and strive to get enough to stay healthy, motivated, and mentally sharp.

I love this man and his research, and his findings can potentially benefit us now and prevent future adverse health conditions. I'm surprized how slow (given the evidence) hospital polices and nursing education doesn't as yet reflect or encapsulate these findings. They certainly have an effect on patient health.

I can tell you by experience. At around age 15 or 16, during summer vacation, I tried to go without sleep. It lasted around 5 days. The body starts vibrating hard, you get overlapping daydreams or thoughts that'll drive u crazy, cause they don't seem to end or find a conclusion, your brain tries to create micro-naps so you pause for a moment, when you do try to get prepared for sleep, it takes hours for your brain to silence itself from alot of continuous random thoughts. It took me over 3 hours to finally sleep. I don't know how that one guy who stayed awake for over 2 weeks encountered his symptoms, but the experience can take it's toll on trying to get REM sleep

@leenaahmed94185 жыл бұрын
@@gabrielfreits297 not true, sunlight is important for the body. Also our body has a biological clock, our circadian rhythms are supposed to be aligned with night and day time as the body produces certain chemicals at night and day times and this will get messed up if you're not asleep and awake at the right times.

You will be vitamin-d deficient which is equally important for brain function.

When rested up I feel like a shell, limping through life almost emotionlessly, unknowingly isolating myself from those around me. When sleep deprived I crave genuine deep conversation with people whom I sometimes hardly even know, about serious things that actually matter in this world. Instead of the relatively meaningless awkward small talk that plagues most of our daily lives.

I’ve stayed up for 44 hours when I was 15. And I can say after 16 hours I didn’t feel any different. It was at 30-40 hours when my brain would not function like it normally does. And after watching this video I regret staying up for days in the summer I had no clue I was hurting myself that bad 😳

Excellent video. I have a friend who says she has not slept in months, entire nights with zero sleep. I say that is not possible- and this video has helped a lot. At some point she must be sleeping & does not realize it. Trying so hard to help her.

Exactly. She has to be sleeping a little bit at some point. Not sleeping for that long is not possible.

I once drove from one state to another for about a 22 hr drive on little sleep. I pushed and pushed through extreme exhaustion. I felt I was fine until I finally got to my destination and stepped out of my car. When I went to lay down on the bed at 4am, I felt so delirious and anxiety ridden I could not sleep for at least another hour. Needless to say next time I go on a long trip I'm taking breaks in between to nap.
