The carriers can't garuntee the phones they haven't sold. The ministerrial direction is to blame, the carriers are arse covering from a legal standpoint. The better direction instead of 'blocking phones that work in all scenarios except emergency' would be notifying the user regularly, and having a test emergency call center. Say weekly sms 'your phone may not work in an emergency, call 111 to try'. Because the carriers don't know for certain - that's the arse covering.

If they're doing it just to force people onto phones that can failover in an emergency, they should instead just allow the phone but instead send a SMS to that service when a known impacted phone (identified via IMEI) joins the network. That way you get a notification and can be aware of the limitation, but continue to use it otherwise.

This has been a problem for years before the shutdown. I live rurally in Queensland. My flagship Sony Xperia phone always got the message in some spots that voice calling wasn't available. That was manageable, it was mostly really remote places where reception was poor anyway and only one Telstra tower was available. However they also arbitrarily had a list of phones for the network and only phones on that list could make wifi calls. Now the list maintained by the Telstra absolutely blocks non standard phones. Which sucks because you really do get better range buying overseas phones (I have bought my ideal phone that wasn't even realised in Australia) and you have to be careful even buying secondhand phones off eBay now just because the IMEI number isn't inherently one your provider recognises and you can't check that code beforehand.

Yeah, a colleague at work discovered this exact problem. His phone has 4G, but it also lost all access as soon as the 3G was shutdown. They even sent us a big list of users on our account that would be disconnected, and his wasn't on the list. We're also seeing coverage issues, we replaced over 100 3G modems/routers with new 4G models, but some have marginal or no reception. They're used in regional areas for remote telemetry and control of equipment, so not having the ability to monitor and control the equipment could mean we don't find out there's a problem until a customer complains about it, and fixing the issue could require a technician to drive to site, sometimes hours away. So rather than being able to address an issue before it becomes an annoying problem for our customers, it could mean they're without our service for anywhere from hours to a day, potentially longer if our techs are already booked out.

You can't really blame any Government as the world is moving away from 3G, due to security vulnerabilities. Another channel reports 4G LTE is not an international standard like 3G was, therefore Telcos are responsible for sending out network settings. That's why local Telcos have created their whitelist.

I still have an old 3g eftpos unit at my store and still running on 3g with telstra even today 😅

It will be working for a bit as Telstra are closing the network off state by state, starting with Tasmania first. It's not a complete shutdown like they advised.

@@923EON Yeah Tasmania was the first, and they will decommission as the days go on. We are also in Melbourne Cup long weekend for many.

If you are aware, why have you not organised to get it replaced?

@ will be interesting to see if they did it in Melbourne Cup and how much of an effect it would have!

It really should have been mandated a number of years ago that all devices sold new in Australia support E000 over VoLTE.

The current main issue is this: If the first 8 digits (Type Allocation Code (TAC)) of your phone IMEIs are not in the whitelist database of the telcos, it will be BANNED. It has nothing to do with the phone capabilities.

The impression I got from the video is the problem is with the phones bought elsewhere.
