Is it more difficult to switch teams as an engineering manager compared to an IC? I want to try the EM track to see how I feel and how well I can carry out the role. On the other hand, I'm worried that if you're a manager, it's hard to switch as you're responsible for your team members and it's emotionally difficult to leave them behind. Also w/o domain knowledge and business context, isn't it hard to become an EM? vs as an IC, you just join a team and gain an understanding of a small fraction of the codebase and that's it. Lastly, when you want to switch back to IC, can that happen in just 1-2 years? Ofc this will depend on companies but I'm curious to hear about your experience.

I don’t think one is more difficult than the other - they both have their challenges. But I like to look at something called “time to first success” which may take much longer for managers because of lots of external circumstances that are out of your control. As an IC, I reel like you can start having impact on your team fairly quickly even if you don’t know the team dynamics yet. As a manager, you need to get to know people, process, culture and problems before you can make impact happen which may take months.
