Sony's portable battery-powered turntable from 1983 has become a highly desired and expensive collectors piece. However before I can demonstrate this one, I'll need to get it working.

UPDATE: After uploading the video, it occurred to to that Sony have in fact revisited their back catalogue recently with the re-launch of the Aibo robotic dog. Hopefully this will continue and we'll get to see some more modern reinterpretations of classic Sony products.
OMISSION: I forgot to mention that I pulled out any remnants of the old felt washer that was protruding from between the cogs before installing my replacement cloth tape.
Also perhaps I should have clarified that the gears unit was welded on at both ends, there were no retaining washers or e-clips that could be removed to disassemble it.
Lots of people want me to say the word Clutch to describe the gears mechanism as if somehow this will fill a void...so here we go
CLUTCH
I suspect nothing has changed.
There's also a fan website dedicated to the Sony PS-F5 that has some additional information - www.ps-f5.com

RECORDS USED
The bicolour records used for the demonstrations were:
1) Stax Number Ones (Yellow & Red)
2) Lou Reed - Transformer (Black & Yellow)
These were limited editions from www.newburycom...
Both are now discontinued - however they have plenty of other exclusive coloured discs to choose from.
Standard black vinyl editions of both are readily available

Agreed! I was around when Sony was THE electronic brand to buy for just about anything you could think of if you wanted quality and durability. It's like they just gave up over the past 25 years. Remember "It's a Sony!" was their tag line? They were the Apple of their day.

About 20yrs ago Sony started selling re-branded low-quality Chinese made products in an attempt to capture a larger portion of the market, however it was a disastrous move which just sullied their brand-name and cost them customers! A good example of how Sony is still sticking to this rather poor strategy is Techmoan's recent 'East Meets West' boombox review (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZ68oJxpqq94n5I ) and I know which product I'd buy as it would still be working in 15-20yrs! Where ever possible Pioneer is the brand I've always bought for audio equipment because while it may not be top-end hifi with a price-tag to match, the quality has always been reasonably good and value for money!

Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka died, that is what happened funny enough Morita was a great critique of Capitalism which is ironic considered he ran the largest electronics Corporation at the time. Never the less his critique was nothing new at the time in Japan as many big Corporation in Japan rose to quality and innovation BECAUSE of the Japanese planning committee that literally forced them to innovate and forbade them from using western tech. This is how Japan became an electronics giant, they had to innovate and make their own microprocessors and electronics rather than buying original western designs and adapt them. With the death of their CEO who held such dear philosophy which belonged more in countries like the Soviet rather than a Capitalist business economy, the new CEO quickly adapted hardline market ideas and basically they started using really low end shitty Chinese rebrands which killed their reputation and to make matters worse they destroyed a huge portion of their own product line up, they damaged their camera and TV lineup as being terrible because they literally were in the beginning. After this CEO who literally killed Sony in many ways, they slapped themselves real good and went back to their roots, sort of.

Yeah, they probably aren't the household name they once used to be, but their newest digital mirrorless cameras nowadays are awesome, in the sense that they bring a lot of new things to a pretty stagnant market. In other words, they innovate!

SMGJohn Thanks for bringing up the founders of Sony! It seems like so many of the great names in Japan from Sony to Honda have decided to stop trying to lead and just become followers in their respective industries once their founders pass away. I agree that it seems like finally after about two decades or more both these once great companies are slowly trying to extricate themselves from the funk they've been in.

+watershed44 When the fuck did Apple innovate? They literally ripped off Sony's old designs for their iPhone. Apple's policy of removing ports creating such stupid designs like Macbook Pro and iPhone 7 which either have extremely inefficient performances because they lack airflow or are too thin, or they are so thin they break in half. And to slap insult on injury their software is among the worst in the industry, seriously no one learned how to do software from IBM?? Clearly Microsoft did and Sony because theirs is at least working properly. And then finally when they make half assed products that are terrible for performance, too shit for reliability and no upgradeability at all they slap on a huge ass pricetag to make it a "brand"
@watershed44
@watershed44 6 жыл бұрын
SMGJohn I totally agree with you, I was just speaking about the way they are both perceived by the masses correct or not. 1000% true that Sony was a true innovator from the ground up, while Apple usually was just very good at taking other's concepts and ideas and marketing them brilliantly. I truly miss the old Sony, and have bought MANY of their products over the past 40 years or so.

Techmoan Sometimes you get lucky like that... A few weeks ago I got lucky in the same way, I was on a fleamarket and I always tend to look for tech/cameras... I saw a box with a few lenses sticking out. I picked one out (the one that looked most impressive) and saw that it was a Canon 300mm F4 L lens, the guy selling them says "10 euros for the whole lot" so you can imagine how quickly I walked off with the box smiling. That L lens alone is €400+, it's an old professional lens, super sharp. Besides that there were some crappy photo-flashers but also some lenses which at first glance seemed like those €5 bad ones, turns out as I put it on marktplaats (a site which you might want to search around on by the way) it was €110 too, together with some €20 stuff. Made 500+ that day if I hadn't kept most the stuff :)

I fell in love with this turntable after seeing your video. I found one on Jauce shortly after and pulled the trigger. Paid quite a bit for it even though it was untested. I got it in the mail today and it had the same problem as yours so I applied your fix and it fixed it right up! It does have another intermittent issue where the stylus will not always stay down after pressing play but I will look into that later. I just want to clarify for others that may be looking for help with a similar problem that you can remove the entire gear assembly and you can take gears off of the shaft and separate them to get to the felt washer. My washer was intact but for some reason it was still slipping hence why I had to use your fix. Anyway, to get the assembly out, you want to remove the two screws from the top of the motor and just let the motor kind of hang there, it will not fall. Then, to get the actual bracket with the gears out, there are two additional screws in the front, they're the same size as the ones from the motor. Once all four screws are removed, the entire assembly can be carefully removed. The gears are held onto the shaft by very small and hard to see plastic clips. You have to be very very careful when removing them. I used a hobby knife to assist but putting it under the clip and pushing upward. I cannot stress how careful you have to be to both no damage them or lose them when doing this. Hopefully this helps other people. Thanks for your help!

Nice one- I have similar clamping issues with mine, except had to 3D print one of the gears as a previous owner had glued the 2 gears together and a load of teeth had been stripped from one. I'm close to it working again, but it's now slipping like yours & I still have some work to do. The original spring was missing too, and I'm experimenting with different springs from my collection of spares. I'm going to try your tape idea-good call. I'd tried some different rubber washers, but they've all been too slippy. I think another reason that there's a clutch is to provide some give at each end of travel. You can remove the whole clamp motor mount assembly by removing two small screws at the front, but probably best to avoid doing so if possible as the motor is connected by a fragile looking ribbon cable. Cheers for linking to my website in your description : )

The problem with the friction-clutch wasn't with that part of the mechanism but with the lubrication of the clamping mechanism itself drying out over time. I'm certain that spraying a small amount of white-grease on that spiral section would have had it clamping properly! Agree that Sony should re-release devices like this that would have a market today, perhaps in contemporary colours like black & gun-metal to distinguish them from the classic collector items. However, what concerns me is what you didn't evaluate was whether there was an acceptable level of wow & flutter, or was it originally more of an example of Sony marketing miniaturisation at the expense of performance? Btw, do you sell those Techmoan singles, as I can see them becoming very collectable!?!

MrWombatty Indeed, there is a significant market that would pay very good money for such classics, why they haven't done it is a mystery. It might just help jump start the company's fortunes after decades of decline.
@MrWombatty
@MrWombatty 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, missed that. Maybe the whole mechanism needed to cleaned first, but obviously that would entail a rather tricky disassemble! As to why the friction-clutch was slipping too easily, I had a thought that the previous owner may have sprayed everything with WD40, including that friction-clutch! Unfortunately, contrary to popular belief WD40 isn't always the best lubricant to use as it thins out existing grease then dries out leaving inadequate lubrication in some places, but will also leave a greasy residue creating a problem where lubricant isn't wanted! Hi Matt! I know this is an old video, you're probably not going to read this and it's slightly unrelated but felt the need to share regardless! After clearing out my sadly departed uncles house, I came across a Sony PS-Q7 turntable. Nicotine stained and in a non-working state, there were some who wished to throw it in landfill. After watching your videos and getting a better understanding of the mechanics of these machines (they can be salvaged!) I decided to take it home. After some prodding and poking, it turns out it was the drive belt of the tone arm. I managed to get it working with the faulty belt, but ordered a new one to give it a new lease of life. Thank you for your videos, not only are they fun and educational, but they give numpties like me the confidence to save treasures from the scrap heap. My teenage son has become fascinated with vinyl after I got my Project turntable. This will go to him and show a new generation the amazing engineering of the past, the value of preservation and the wonder of being curious. Thanks again.

The intro relied on the persistence of vision effect created with flashing leds that are synchronised with a magnet near the left reel that tells them when to flash so the text remains horizontal and the right way up.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out. I recently bought a Sony PS-F5, but it didn't come with a power supply. I intend to make a power cable for it by soldering a DC connector to a usb cable, as I'm told the voltage from a USB power source will be sufficient. However, as I don't have an existing power supply, I'm not sure what size DC connector to buy. Could anyone here (who has a PS-F5 or PS-F9) measure their DC connector plug and let me know the measurements? I need 3 measurements: The outer barrel diameter, the inner pin diameter (the hole diameter) and the barrel length. Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Always a pleasure to watch your videos really! One way or another, this one got me thinking about a portable record player I had when I was a child, I guess it was around 1981 or something like that. I don't remember the brand or model anymore, but I remember it only was able to play 45 rpm records. You had to pop them into a slot at the front of the device, it clicked in place and started playing. At the end of the record, the record stopped spinning and at the left of the record slot, there was a round button to eject the record. Also at the front, there was a volume control and a tone control and I remember at the back, there was a plug for a power lead; I never used that as it also ran on batteries. I really love to own one like that again, but I have no idea of the brand or model...

Hope you somehow will read this. In my old line of work in the bicycle industry we used a kind of friction grease to make the seatpost and other parts that shouldn't be sliding when you don't want it to. This kind of grease is often called carbon grease, some of these got a bit of sand mixed with the grease, but there are friction grease made for carbon bicycle frames that, instead of sand, got tiny plastic particles mixed with the grease. The plastic-particle-grease shouldn't wear the cogs out any faster than the felt mat would, i'd say. This could work for the sliding friction cogs when the felt mat no longer works.

Chinese manufacturing factories build what the client specifies. If the client does their own engineering and presents a design, specification and bill of materials that is high quality, the end product will be high quality. Unfortunately, way too many clients are designing to a price point not to a quality standard. The Walmart's of the world push for lower and lower cost with every order. Even more of them don't actually engineer anything. They go through the items the Chinese offer for sale and stick their brand on it with very little changes that aren't just cosmetic. So that, in a few sentences, is why a lot of Chinese made goods are of such low quality. Ah, but they're cheap.

I remember my mom having one of these when I was little. It didn't work and she told me to scrap it. I had no idea what it was so I used it as a space ship. I saw it needed batteries so I put some in and it worked!! Still being the unknowing kid I kept using it as a space ship till it was shot down from the sky by an enemy fighter. It landed on an ant hill where I doused it in petrol and watched it burn for dramatic effect.

I, going to have to disagree with your disagreement. You show how easily broken tech can be fixed with a little trial and error and ingenuity, you’re definitely raising the lower end of the pricing scale as sellers will now weighed say "easily fixed" and include a link to your video, or just fix them themselves and set a higher price. Not blaming, it is what it is. Keep the awesome videos coming!

You must disassemble the complete mechanism and clean this in a Ultrasonic bath with a cleaning detergent and assemble it again so the thing is working again. the reason is the dust in the penetrating oil and between the mechanical parts from this press. i repair a lot of old machines now and i know well don't use W40 you must go the long way and disassemble all of this mechanical parts so you can clean it from this dust inside. I know this is a hard job but it help to repair this old technique. Remember this is our technical history from this early days.
