Hurrah - I'm glad you're revisiting dash cams. I bought the DDPai cam on your recommendation and it did the job famously. Have you tried setting the collision detection on to "high" and see if it is less sensitive? I had my Cobra dash cam in a 4x4 and set it on a higher setting and it never went off even when I was off road.
@larryscott39827 жыл бұрын
That was my first thought. Low g trigger which is high sensitivity, or low sensitivity which is high g trigger. Since a minor pothole triggered on low I think it low g trigger. But I'm surprised he didn't describe the behavior on high after being disappointed with low.

I wonder if there really is a difference in a High Endurance memory card vs a regular one? I ask because SanDisk has a new line of "Nintendo Switch Certified" memory cards that are the same as their regular offerings, but are drastically more expensive. It just makes me wonder if High Endurance is just another marketing ploy so they can charge a few extra bucks.
@UnluckyOmenYT7 жыл бұрын
anthonyspecf the only thing I could think of being a difference between regular and high endurance is the amount of writes the card can handle.

One difference is that companies like Samsung now say their memory card warranties may be void if the card is used in a dashcam...unless you use their High Endurance cards. Now don't kill the messenger on this - I'm just passing on info.
@MattOGormanSmith7 жыл бұрын
In a security cam or a dash cam, you're constantly writing the whole card in a loop, so you'll reach the rewrite limit in the shortest time. It might take a couple of years to wear out a standard one, but you'd never know if a write had failed until you tried to read it which might be very inconvenient if a crucial block of video was missing. There is a trade off in manufacturing between capacity, speed and rewrite cycles (endurance) so for a security camera I can see a benefit in special high endurance cards. If you can get a standard one with twice the capacity for the same price that might work out better, as it'll naturally last twice as long because each block is only written half as often.

Been using this camera for around a year now and can't fault the video quality, a few of issues with it though. 1. It sometimes switches on with red light solid with nothing on display (Set to always on), thereby not recording anything, removing cable and reinserting fixes it. Could be because i'm using a nextbase cable that goes into the fuse box, And a right angle usb adaptor. 2. It's a bit iffy with some sd cards, i have a 32gb sandisk ultra u1 which it refuses to work with and a Transcend 64gb that sometimes works then refuses until it's formated again. The toshiba one that comes in the box works flawlessly and i'll be buying a bigger one very soon after finding out kwik fit took my car for a drive after a service/MOT, I only had 3 min of video as the rest was getting deleted. 3. Can't turn g-sensor off, annoying when i wanna listen to my music a little bit louder as the sd card soon fills up with triggered files.

After watching this video I bought one of these from a Chinese seller on EBAY. I was very pleased with the build quality and the accessories, but unfortunately my model has unacceptable video quality, due to the lens being poorly focused. The leather grain on the dashboard is in clear, sharp focus, but anything further than the end of the bonnet is out of focus. I have googled for more information and find that this seemed to be a fairly common problem with the model before the "Ultra", but seems to be also present on this, later model. I have notified the seller about the problem and await a reply. I'll post any results.

The SD card on mac is probably because they want to support larger card sizes, and FAT32 can't handle it. That means they have to go to FAT64 or NTFS. NTFS MacOS can read but not write, so I bet they went to FAT64. MacOS can't read that, or at least couldn't last I checked. FAT based filesystems are generally preferred in embedded systems because they're much simpler and handle power disconnects better, and usually on a camera you don't care whether the filesystem supports ownership permissions and gunk like that.
@recrudesce7 жыл бұрын
FAT64 is exFAT. exFAT is supported in Mac OS X 10.6.5 and later. So there must be another reason the SD can't be read.

No, I am a disgruntled programmer, who has been forced to not support MacOS due to the paywall. If you find that pathetic, so do I. Apple doesn't need to do this, because people will come regardless.

AFAIK only Citroën offer a built in dashcam. Everyone else _could_ if they wanted to, but as dashcams are illegal (yes, highly illogical) in some places manufacturers choose not to, should their customers drive their dashcam-enabled car into a country that doesn't allow them. That's not a problem for Citroën, being French they obviously don't care about other countries than France anyway.

I'm still using the SJ1000 you tested as a dashcam and over many cars and many years it's never put a foot wrong. You list the fact that this Yi has a battery as a negative, yet I've nothing but praise for dashcams with batteries as I've used it at my destination as a very good camcorder. Next, the distortion correction just looks like an image crop to me, so effectively you're losing resolution as well as field of view. Sure you want to do this? You can always do it in post. Great review though Mat, really detailed.

@ollieb98757 жыл бұрын
We too have double yellow where you're not allowed to park, if it is the same thing, though you are allowed to stop on double yellow to pick up / drop off passengers and unless other restrictions are posted even load / unload vehicles there. I believe disabled people can park on them for some period of time also. The zig-zag lines are more restrictive than double yellow.. it means absolutely do not stop or park there unless for the lights and don't ride your motorcycle or bicycle through the middle of two lane traffic, (we call that filtering) you have to stop and wait in-lane. The idea being there might be pedestrians crossing between the cars close to the junction that are unseen / occluded by traffic. There is a rule in the highway code that says you're not supposed to stop / park within 10 metres of a junction / turning. The traffic light could be thought of as a junction and the zig-zags are a formalisation of the rule and you will get some kind of penalty for parking on the zig-zags, double yellow you can normally stop briefly and maybe for longer given certain circumstances. There also exists a single yellow line also which really means you're not even supposed to stop there but again there might be times of day when it's ok.

One thing to note about some dashcams... I have a Mini 806, which works fairly well after nearly two years, but for a few annoying quibbles: the GPS takes ages to lock upon powerup, if it locks at all, unless the GPS mount is powered up and THEN the camera is slid into the mount, then it always locks on. Also, the file lock feature DOES NOT work (neither by manual button press nor G-Sensor activation). Loop recording is a bit of a misnomer because it deletes files randomly, not in order of oldest to newest. 1080p/30 still does not support image rotation (camera mounted upside-down with proper menu item set) and 1080p/45 appends 7 minutes of still frame at the end of each 3-minute file. Multiple firmware updates have not fixed the problem, despite what the company's representatives claim. It does, however, still do its job quite nicely despite those issues. The battery, as expected, has gone down the loo after a few years in a temperate climate and after six months of use, failed to hold a charge. I have relegated the Mini to rear camera duties now, and happily use the Viofo A119S for my front cam. It works wonderfully well, GPS locks within 10 seconds of boot, and with the capacitor instead of a battery, I expect it to last quite some time. (Only have two months' use so far.) The 1080p/60 is smooth as silk, the LOCK button does what it should; however, it comes with the same style car adapter shown here, and it simply does not have the amperage output to boot the camera. So I have the cord plugged into the Mini's car adapter (which has that useful USB port on it) until I can get around to hardwiring. Both cameras can only handle Daylight Savings Time by changing time zones. Both cameras I have purchased after watching your thorough reviews of these models, and I want to thank you for the time you spent reviewing them and making the video files available for download for us to review without YT's compression algorithm. It really helps a great deal, as it helps us be informed consumers!

What happens if you format the card to FAT32 with 64kb allocation size using OSX, and then use the card on the Yi dash cam?
@JaredReabow7 жыл бұрын
I don't understand why you want a bigger than 16gb card if it comes with one. Generally, you only need a card that can record 8hrs which is potentially a week of driving depending on what you do. if you are in an incident you would remove the card for safekeeping or lock the file anyway. As such going out of the way to purchase an additional card seems somewhat pointless. I cannot think of more than 1 situation where you would want a longer recording time and that would be if you forgot something happened which beggs the question if it really was that important.

That camera handles the sun a lot better than the cheap-o one I currently use. I've added it to my 'possible eventual purchases' list. For the sake of clarity, I'll add that my current camera, when facing the sun, shows a black disk where the sun is, and the rest of the image washes out badly. But considering it was $15 for a 1080p camera which does OK most of the rest of the time, I'd say it's decent for the money.

I've found with a lot of these types of devices, 60fps isn't really achievable even if it's what is being recorded, because the effective shutter speed doesnt stay faster than the necessary 1/60s due to the amount of light required. It might also be the case that the overexposure in 60p mode on this one is due to compensation for that too.

I'm looking for some discrete dual cam, like "Koonlung K1S" (I had this one but it was just crap, but had smart discrete construction which I liked). Most dash cams manufactures seems to put at there main point of honour to display their huge cameras on the windscreen, I'm always afraid that this is just an invitation for thefts. Since I was hit by other driver in the back of my car and my small mobius was recording only front so did not help at all, I feel need to have dual cam which is also "stealth".

This is a nice detailed review. Thanks! I wonder if the problem with MacOS is with the capacity of the SD card. I wonder if macOS would be able to read from the 16-gig card that came with the camera, for instance.

Mat a fantastic video... now very tempted to get one of these... Did you feedback anything to YI about the issues you found? Just wondered.

They’ve been in touch after watching the video and are feeding the information back to the engineering team.

Was waiting for this, thanks :D The mount really lets the camera down and it's a shame they don't include a cable to attach directly to the cars electrical system. But for the price it's a great camera.

Thank you for the review. Just bought one of these, to replace my elderly Mobius camera. Very impressed so far, exactly as you describe, simple, no frills camera, with very good quality video. I also purchased a 64GB SDHC Card (Samsung Evo), to use in place of the supplied 16Gb Card. My MacBook Pro recognises the 64GB SDHC card and reads it, no problem, so, perhaps, problem has been resolved?

thanks for another dashcam review! yes, it's been a long time. I really enjoy them. I've purchased several for my wife and I, and most have been after watching your reviews. The last I purchased was the round one with the sony sensor. And it had a very wide FOV, 170 deg I believe, and as you stated in your review, things that happen right in front of you look like they're way out in front of you. This review didn't mention anything about that phenomenon, so one might assume it shows a more realistic distance, but the fish-eye correction makes me wonder. Can you give me your thoughts on that issue with this camera? I'd really like a great camera that shows incidents "as-is". Thanks a million!!!

techmoan, while i was looking at this cam on amazon, I ran across another dashcam, www.amazon.com/dp/B00U0OJMYG/ the street guardian SG9665GC v3 2017 edition, and it looks phenomenal! it has a sony sensor and glass, metal body, super capacitor, wdr, great vid quality, and 120 deg fov, which will suit me perfectly i believe. I'd love to see this cam reviewed by you!

Great review and the Yi Ultra seems like a pretty good dash cam. I wonder if the Yi has a better video quality than the mobius action camera.

Are you still using DDPAI M6 Plus ? What can you say about its reliability after all this time using it?

It's worked fine for me, I've had no problems. People using the Android app have reported problems, but the OSX app hasn't given me any issues.

As always, a great video. I don't suppose you would consider reviewing the Vantrue X3 Dash Cam?

So newer model doesnt have ADAS? How good it was in previous model, that they decided not to include it now?
