UPDATES:
1) The phone connector can be re-attached to the camera flipped around so it fits it in the provided case without protruding through the hole. When I tried this during shooting it didn't seem to fit - but I had the case inverted. I apologise for this error/omission. If this has changed your mind about the camera - click an affiliated link above to purchase it.
2) The photo at 05:22 of the railings was not taken with the Osmo - it snuck into the project folder in error. It was taken with an iPhone X in Portrait mode - hence the weird blurring artifacts.

For creating high res panoramic images Microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor) is a really good free tool for Windows. All you need to do is take a bunch of overlapping pictures at the same exposure, throw them all into ICE and the application will automatically find out what picture goes where. It takes a bit of time to process, especially if you have a lot of images. You can then select between several different projections to get something that looks right for the image you took and crop out a finished image that will have a really high resolution.

I feel like this product is the result of a lot of compromise and internal struggle at DJI over what their next product should be, resulting in a device that isn't great at any of it's potential use cases. Out of the box it's too wide to be used purely as a camera attachment for your phone but lacks even the most basic physical controls needed for solo operation. It has a 4k sensor and a lot of prosumer friendly functionality, but lacks an external microphone port and tripod mounting. They have a litany of aftermarket accessories but other than the controller attachment they're all too expensive for how simple and restricted they are, leaving them out priced and sometimes out featured by other companies' accessories.

FYI When taking Panoramas on the DJI Osmo Pocket (and many other DJI Products) the pano image saved to the phone is only a fraction of the size of the source files saved on the CD card. You can download the pano source images from the SD card and stitch them together on a PC using the DJI Media Maker app provided by DJI (just google it for a link) or there are 3rd party tools that will let you create a full resolution panoramic shot from those same files. Also the phone adapter can be reversed so the end that plugs into the phone is stored closer to the camera body during storage. Though you should know this because you get a warning that the plug and wifi adapter can't be connected at the same time. This can is resolved by inserting the phone plug adapter the opposite way.
@Fenlandia

Thanks for commenting this, if you're just posting a pano to the web then the low res is probably fine but it is nice to have access to the full resolution images, same for timelapses and motionlapses.

Fantastic long-term review. Thank you for taking the time to post this. I’m fascinated by the *idea* of this device, but I do think it was rushed to market in an unfinished state. I do hope for a second generation version that is a complete product. Some things I would look for, and would expect to pay a *little* more money for, would include: 1. Wider angle lens. 2. Inbuilt wireless. 3. External audio support (mic port, support for wireless mic/earbud monitor) 4. “Log” low-contrast, low-saturation video output for color grading. 5. Inbuilt jog wheel or thumb pad for panning/tilting. 6. Forego the direct physical connection to the phone. There should be no need for this in 2019. We have NFC, Bluetooth, WiFi which should all be sufficient for use without direct port connections. 7. Ease way back on the accessories. Make this thing work out of the box really well. 8. Tripod mount at the base.

True, any modern smartphone and gimbal would be more practical, and probably higher quality too. Samsung S9 has a pretty great adjustable depth of field. Was thinking the same thing. The horizon and corners were the smoothest I had seen in the entire video. Course he was bouncing up and down (but that is how he walks, each step he probably goes up and down 2 to 3 inches or so and when the camera is locked on the horizon the effect makes him look like a FPS game. But from a gimbal standpoint it was dead on with the horizon IMHO)

Something I noticed, you were talking about the adapter pocking through the hole when connected the camera in the case. You can turn the adapter around so it faces the other way, that's why there's a little cut out there. So you just pull it off, flip it around, reattach it, and you're good to go. You're right about it not taking the control wheel or wireless adapter...that's a bummer.

I don't get why panorama modes are still a selling point. If you do panoramas with camera built-in modes it's usually always disappointing for one reason or other. 2 years later and I have both the Pocket 1 and the Pocket 2, and I love them both. Each has its strengths and is better at some thangs than the other. I mostly prefer the 26mm of the Pocket 1, and much prefer the Pocket 1 Controller Wheel to the Joystick of the Pocket 2 so I have two of them. Love the Extension Pole, and the charging cases. The one thing that DJI has never sold and always should have, is a Z axis stabilizer. Many of them on eBay don’t work very well, but the ones made by Scotty Makes Stuff are fantastic and really make a big difference.

This Apple model of "buying a canvas, but having to wait for paint and brushes" is getting absurd. That's why many Apple products have a complaint list a mile long. This camera seems to follow the formula, but really needs to at least have the control wheel, filter lenses, and an improved storage case as standard. The company has a good product, just doesn't need to make it a pay as you go affair.

Most films are shot with 35-50mm lenses... this is a 26mm equivalent, which is actually quite wide! I'm GLAD they didn't go wider, as it would make the camera look like a GoPro... These days you’re lucky if the first firmware release allows you to upgrade to the next version (for you it seemed it almost didn’t), let alone does anything useful! Edit: Does the usb mic perhaps require a firmware update to support it? Therefore why, when you tested, a generic one didn’t work? Some chance I suppose at those prices, but it could be the case. Yep, designed to make you buy the accessories. Perhaps it’s called the pocket, not because you can put it in a pocket, but instead because it will leave a hole in them?

Maybe they should make a version mk2 or mk3 and have these things added onto it. If people worry about it becoming too big, I guess they could keep it small if it just had a digital camera lens and nothing else. I will never buy one of these version 1 models. Great review though. The only accessory you need to get good results in this camera is a ND filter and this does not affect portability at all. Of course a device this size will get some compromises, but it does have a great sensor and horizontal stabilization is fenomenal in most cases. It also have d-cine like profile for color grading and boots in 4 seconds. It’s like reviewing a Mini Disc player and complaining about the absence of LP support. You can use this as it is and get really good cinematic results if you are willing to adapt in exchange of portability. It’s the kind of product you just get if you know well all the options in the same niche (and know how awkward and slow to start they are).

The field of view is fine, otherwise you'll end up with a fish eye view distortion a la Gopro. Better have a 360 cam at this point... seriously. When I choose "streightview" aka "normal camera mode" on a Gopro, its really like this: NORMAL. Vertical lines are well... STRAIGHT! :-)

I'M BACK, and you're the best, worth the wait. Not sure what or who this is for, a walking vlogger? This cam is confusing and too ''fiddly'' as you'd say. I'll stick to my GoPro's. I know you're not a fan, but they work where water is concerned thats for sure. WISH, I could just find a outstanding spy style camera, versus all the junk to vlog with.

is it just me or is the camera audio out of sync? looks to me like the audio is late by a few frames.
@NoshAbroad
@NoshAbroad 5 жыл бұрын
Every time the Osmo saves out a file (~4GB or about 9 min of 4k) it skips 2-3 frames of video. If you use an external mic the will slowly cause the audio to de-sync the more you use it This may or may not be what's happening, but "the more you know GIF"
@silbay
@silbay 5 жыл бұрын
@@NoshAbroad gee you think that is why true video is shot with 10 second clips not hours of continuous boring shit that is later edited out? Oh and it doesn't get farther out of sync nor does it limit to 9 minutes. 4K takes WAY more than 4GB for 9 minutes moron BTW
@NoshAbroad
@NoshAbroad 5 жыл бұрын
@@silbay Dear "Moron" it depends on the bitrate. The Osmo Pocket can record video+audio up to 100 mbps but generally falls between 60-80 mbps or about 8.75 MB/s. 8.75 x 60 x 9 = 4725 MB / 1024 ~4.6 GB ... "moron BTW" learn to maths. It only pays to troll if you are smart. Find a new hobby.

I love mine, it's not perfect, but it's a whole lot more use to me than the Go-Pro hero 7 Black that I gave to my Daughter the minute I got the Osmo. Although I do use it on a selfie stick(actually an upside down monopod) because I don't need my fat head taking up the whole screen. I also don't use it in low light situations. But it's a perfect travel camera with my G7X II for low light and food videos etc.

Wow, I was kind of excited at the beginning about it, but after seeing SO many required extra bits to buy to really use it properly I am completely turned off. Seriously, requiring a dongle for BT/WiFi in 2019? That’s a problem I would expect to see in a product made years ago, not current year where any sort of decent pocket cam tends to roll that feature in.

Thank you so much for this update, I pre ordered it from DJI, but after the first early reviews I cancelled my order, and decided my Hero 7 would suffice. I am blown away that all the bad points about it have now been resolved, mine comes on Tuesday , and I have already ordered a clip that goes on the bottom, that makes it perfectly flat and has a tripod mount underneath, so I can use all my GP mounts too, £11 amazon :-)
