They've always had technical difficulties on this game. Something similar to this, the clock stopping and them playing right thru it. One time it said a lower number than "4" at the end, then when the prizes were revealed, they all were correct. Best of all was hearing Bob had to ad-lib off all these mistakes.

people keep recording these on EP/LP instead of SP (standard play). Videos recorded in Standard Play almost always look very good. The disadvantage is you can only fit 2 episodes of TPIR on a 120 minute tape, you can fit SIX episodes in EP, so people record in EP to get more out of each tape. But EP really is only meant to for a "view once and write over" tape not something you plan on keeping long term.

to be fair to Jana, when you get picked to be on a show like that it can be crazy loud and rushed. I'm sure she was just having a crap ton of fun and didn't have the luxury to sit in a chair and ponder the prices of items. she doesn't look stoned... obviously thats the look of a overwhelmingly excited contestant. I think she made out wonderfully with all the prizes too!

I suspect that someone has to press a button backstage to reveal the number right when the contestant pulls the lever, and the person probably pressed the wrong button so the wrong number came up.

I remember a similar incident back in early 1992 where the readout didn't light up at all...bob ordered the clock be stopped but malfunctions with the readout and the clock continued, seemingly flustered bob ordered all 4 prizes won to the contestant...I remember that because it was one of the rare race game playings with the music cue heard here but the green turntable rug....

Yes, I remember this episode, I think. Bob asked she didn't know how many were right, and the clock stop, but like you said, it continued for at least 1 - 2 seconds. After coming back from break, he stated "During the last commercial, I learned they did not get the clock stopped IMMEDIATELY when there was a question about how many the contestant had right. You did not get your full 45 seconds you should have gotten, so we're going to give you everything."

I remember one back in the early playings (when the show was still only 30 minutes), when it said "4", but when they revealed the prices, only one was right. They gave the contestant the four prizes, but in order to be fair to the other contestants (because how much you won determined who was in the showcase, in addition to who gets the first choice), only the one actually correct was counted when determining who the top winner of the day was.

I suspect that it was human error, because I get the impression that the number right is revealed manually when the lever is pulled. So someone pressed the wrong button by mistake to light up a 1 instead of a 2. I know that the sound effects are done manually, as I have discovered that there is an electronic keyboard that someone uses to trigger the sound effects such as the buzzer for losing or the dinging sound for winning.

The Race Game apparatus is the same one they've used since the game was introduced way back when. I'm pretty sure the 0/1/2/4 is a human operator checking the order of the price tags behind the scenes and controlling the number via a remote switch. Also, I seem to recall one occasion sometime during the early 1980's when a contestant pulled the handle and a "3" popped up.

indeed of course most game shows don't have as high stakes or it's harder to make mistakes with like with Deal or No Deal, Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune and the latter 2 usually review things as they are filming so they can correct stuff if they need to. Jeopardy! can mishear things at times so if a correction needs to be made while they're playing the game then they have no issues with doing so.

It's irrelevant if they weren't going to get it regardless of the error since the show wants to be fair and consistent so if they ever have a malfunction that is of their own doing then they'll always award all of the prizes. I doubt they make contestants accept everything that they win though due to taxes.

Our society has devolved, badly. She's typical of it.... looks to the audience for whatever they are telling her to do and mindlessly does it, uses no common sense as to the values, and doesn't even realize until Drew tells her, after the cards are revealed, that she even won anything.

Or it's a game show that's always involved a great deal of audience participation that has never given its contestants any pre-show prep because they're selected live, so the contestants have no idea what game they're going to play and may not have a complete grasp on the rules or optimum play strategies because there is no briefing. They have also ever stepped foot on the stage prior to the taping so they have no time to get used to the additional lighting, technical staff, and other things that you never see at home which are incredibly distracting, as well as the fact that the studio audience is encouraged to be loud. This on top of the obvious nerves in realizing you're suddenly on national television. Plus she had the "common sense" to know the computer would be the most expensive, and had trouble with three items all of which were $900 apart at most and could easily have been more or less expensive, depending on the manufacturers, materials used, or any other number of factors. You see what you look for though, I guess.
