You spared me a frustrating weekend with this review. Because of it I made the slightly more expensive choice. If there is any question of the extra expense, I will share your video with my wife. Thanks!!

Thanks for doing this video. The one I bought for evaluation has a directly connected power cord. But it also claimed to have an internal RFI/EMI filter, which it does not.

Hi there mister, do you know any power strip rated for 100-230V?

Thanks. Was about to buy a Furman but didn’t wanna pay the price because it is not something I always need as I have a lot of 20, 30 & 50a in my power distro. But sometimes I am in venues where their lights need to go into my power distro and I don’t have enough outlets. Saw this but I was skeptical. You are awesome, ordering now

So, if you've already got a cheap power strip like this, if you swap out the fuse and upgrade the wire to 12 gauge - will that fix everything?
@andymok7945 Жыл бұрын
You can also get equipment with bad wired power cords. The have the wires crossed from where you plug into the wall to the other end. So the neutral goes to the live on the other end. So in the end the neutral wire is what gets fused. The first unit I would not use at all for anything.
@RhythmicSensations Жыл бұрын
I purchased one of these simply to evaluate it. This is not something which is designed for your expensive equipment. On Amazon this was advertised as having an RFI/EMI filter, and it goes on to describe how this is a must have for your expensive equipment. This is true, but when I disassembled this for inspection, there was no such filtering. The USB charge port does talk to your phone and sets it to fast charge, however, when it did this, the internal charger created much more RF noise than the Samsung charger which came with my phone. This was evident when I watched my HF ham radio while on the 160-meter band. The power cord was soldered directly to the board and to the fuse holder. All of these power cord connections were grey, indication cold solder joints. The ground wire throughout this switch-box is very thin. The power cord is undersized. The box and paperwork which came with the unit didn't say anything about filtering, that was only in the advertisement. So buyer beware.

That ground should be at least 12AWG or even better 10 AWG and solid copper.
@mharris50472 жыл бұрын
The ground should be at least as thick as the line and neutral. The ground wire on the "PDU" looked like solder wire, that will melt quickly in that application. Just because you can attach wire with solder doesn't make it a good ground wire on its own.
@metalheaddw053 жыл бұрын
The burning plastic smell is also coming from that Kill-A-Watt meter. They are not rated to pull 15a consistently and mine has melted in the past.

The Rockville branded version of this Technical Pro PS9U does not have a detachable power cable and the rack ears are part of the front panel (at least from the pictures online), but I bet it's the same internally. Interesting. Great video!

Just came across your reviews today as I looked for some tests of some power surge protectors. Nice to see someone else pull them apart and do a review which saves me some time and money! FWI - I was in the Army as a MW radio tech dealing with high power transmitters (50KW+) then 30+ years w/AT&T as a MW, television & audio tech plus doing live sound & lighting production on the side before LED lighting became a bit thing so some of our light loads were very high so we had to be very mindful of current demands. Your first power strip there was definitely a piece of crap that shouldn't even be for sale to anyone. I see the first strip has a CE marking which is likely bogus. I see some of the cheap (dangerous) products coming from China that have a CE or even a UL or ISO rating which is counterfeit since the products certainly don't meet any standards. At least some China makers will say that their products are "Not rated," (NR) so people need to beware of the fact.

This is an old video, so probably don't need to mention this as you might already know, or know by now. But at around 11:00 you want to aim a bit higher than the laser as the beam that measures the temperature is below that especially at very short distances. Was hard to tell if you were aiming correctly, you probably were and I'm just throwing out pointless words at something you probably did correctly. Anyway... Was a fun watch and very informative even though I came across this completely randomly.

FYI, impedance on Aluminum is greater so you have to have larger aluminum wire (lower gauge) to meet the same spec as copper. IE, x2, so with how thin everything is on that thing it's basically wired to be a USB charger and nothing else, if even that.

Isn't it only a fire hazard if the combination of devices plugged into it are anywhere close to 15 amps?
@booradlly3 жыл бұрын
It’s a fire hazard if the total load is over 10 amps. Melted cord is just as much a fire hazard. Yur sleepy one day, plug the wrong thing in, boom fire. Should not be like that.

Isn't it technically 10A @600 Volts? Since we are running this at 120V, the actual amperage tolerance should be higher?

If a conductor is rated at 10 Amps you cannot go above 10 Amps no matter the voltage. Most building wire/cables that are used in 120-240 Volt circuits are 600 Volt rated, and most conductors for 120-240 Volt devices are rated at 300 or 600 Volts. That doesn't mean that you want to hook up your 120 Volt device to 300-600 Volts, and it also doesn't mean that the Amp rating will change.
@illestofdemall134 жыл бұрын
@@VictorEstrada Amps, Volts and Watts are just units of measurement. When you get shocked, there are two things that will determine how much current will flow. One is the resistance between the two points of your body that are touching the points of different electrical potential, and second is the amount of voltage that is present. The higher the voltage, then the higher the amperage will be according to Ohm's Law. Current equals Voltage over Resistance (I=E/R).
@ryanbuckley55295 жыл бұрын
Yea 15 amps needs to have at least a 14 awg wire. That's so unsafe.. I'm thinking of buying one and switching out all the wire to the correct size. Like most people I want it for the blue switches
@mharris50472 жыл бұрын
I prefer 12 gauge wiring in my home (for any 110 volt circuits I run that is what I use). However, 14 gauge is the bare minimum for 15 amps (technically 12 gauge is rated for 20 amps assuming the wire is copper which became code required after the late 1960's) and then only if the run is less than 100 feet, that is also the minimum code requirement for a PDU like the ones shown in the video. Even most of my outdoor extension cords are 12 gauge (I have one 16 gauge that I bought for cheap and kept under my carport for 25 years, it was intended to power a 300 watt air compressor for filling car tires and an (originally) 75 or 100 watt hanging work light and I recently bought a 12 gauge cord to put in its place after we occasionally started running other things on it, the circuit going to my carport is a 20 amp circuit with 12 gauge wiring). As for buying the crap PDU evaluated here (and yes, I know I am late responding to the comment), if the through holes on the boards are too small to accommodate 12 or even 14 gauge wiring you are wasting your money and time with one of them.
@rollingtones13 жыл бұрын
Chinese manufacturers cut back on wire gauge to save money all the time.
@mharris50472 жыл бұрын
This is definitely for export from China only. They actually have their own CE mark that specifies the product for export from China only, these devices are illegal to use within China. The C E (with a half space between letters) is an EU stamp of approval, the CE (no space) is China export only.
@Xyrium4 жыл бұрын
I wonder if even that CE certification is real, or fraudulent on the Technical Pro....
@mharris50472 жыл бұрын
There are two CE specifications. The C E with a half space between the letters is an EU stamp of approval whereas the CE without a space between the letters is "China Export" which means the device is not legal to use in China and must be exported. Of course Shenzhen Shit manufacturers can replicate the C E logo so don't count on it being legitimate. I would say look for a UL stamp and number but they are quickly being run out of business by the ETL/Intertek which purports to be equivalent to the UL but actually isn't.

You have low amp draw components hooked up, while he had a space heater hooked up. Dont plug anything in that has a large draw: space heater, hair dryer, micro wave, toaster, large power amp, etc., and you should be ok, but if you smell anything coming from it, throw it in the trash. I would pull the cover off and look at the inside of that plug and see if it is getting deformed though.
