Technique for playing accented hi-hat 8th notes

This is my explanation of a way to play accented 8th notes on the hi-hat, with the example of the hi-hat part from Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean' (played by Jonathan Moffett on the original recording. Check out this video of him playing the song: • Michael Jackson's Drum... )
This technique involves the use of the arm, wrist, and fingers to create a slight 'whipping motion'. Isn't not more like a push pull you,re doing? I think the moeller is including a motion from the elbow a bit more.

You could be right, mate. This is just the way it was explained to me years ago by my own drum teacher

It does involve the elbow motion. I took lessons with Jim Chapin years ago. Lots of bad and incorrect teaching videos these days

Accented
