I watched this video of yours already maybe 5 - 6 times, because it inspires a lot. What I changed over the course of time is I replaced the ducker with an automation of the rumble´s volume. This feels like even more control to both the rumlbe and the kick and also gives me the chance to insert "errors" once in awhile, so it takes longer for the two to start sounding dull.

As someone who used to work on electronic music way back in 2000 as a highschool student, with zero music theory, or background in music - its amazing seeing how you're supposed to actually engineer these sounds. Now I am really curious how techniques like this translate to music outside of Techno. Textures created from obliterating a duplicate channel that maybe isn't using a kick as source material or not using a 4x4 beat. Makes me really want to learn more about how the music is made from artists like Roly Porter and Emptyset.
@thisislag3 жыл бұрын
I don't want to be a negative nancy here because this is a great tutorial, I just wanted to comment on the "groove" advice. The very definition of groove is having an anchor and then having elements which are "running away" from the anchor, ie playing off the grid. If you make sure that everything pulsates together with the kick you will end up having no groove. For example: if you are sidechaining for techincal reasons (as you would with the sub part of the rumble) then having it pulsate with the kick is a great idea as it creates space in the crowded low-frequency part. If you are sidechaining to achieve some groovy pumping in the mids or highs - try sidechaining the signal with a ghost percussion (kick or whatever) which is 5-30 miliseconds late or early compared to the original kick. This offset is what (amongst other things) creates groove. It gives the mind and the body more than one dimension-grid of the rhythm to latch-on to and creates interesting tension between elements. Anyway, thank you for doing these Oscar! Great job and keep them coming!
@OscarUnderdog3 жыл бұрын
Hey Nancy 😋 I appreciate your comment, you're totally right. It's sometimes a bit hard to define groove in 1 way, because as you say there is the "anchor groove" and then syncopated grooves running against it creating tension and interest. I guess it's not an indepth enough treatment of that idea for sure - I just want people to start thinking of the rumble as something that has a coherent groove against which other elements can be juxtaposed.
@machi0893 жыл бұрын
Amazing stuff, Thank you for a very Informative Tutorial. Please do a Tutorial on Techno Pads, Thanks.
@andycordy51902 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to pretend I can do this because I just can't sit there for hours with a groove pounding in my cans but I am massively impressed by the clarity of the result. It comes into focus even better at the end, when you demo the alternative versions. I also love the strange arrhythmia created by allowing the secondary elements to wander. We might think this would be catastrophic but the ear clings onto the security of the original kick so it actually stabilises the experience. That's quite spooky.
@ixxirecords263 жыл бұрын
Blessed to have come across this. Been trying to create fusion trap/edm and it's been really challenging. I’ve been trying something similar with all hardware (in fact, almost all analogue): the trick is that the reverb tail from percussion is pretty much just filtered noise, especially if you’ve sidechained out all of the early reflections. So, some white noise through a band pass filter can give you a pretty good rumble without even needing reverb, and you can shape it in all sorts of creative ways.

For parallel processing: I like to use Ableton's Audio Effect Rack, duplicate the layer. Keep one layer for the dry sound, one layer for wet only sounds. Achieves the same effect as having your "Kick" and "Rumble" one on single track (if that fits your workflow).
