As the old saying goes: "What's the difference between a rock concert and a techno party? At a rock concert the lights shine onto the stage. At a techno party the lights shine onto the people". If the lights are shining onto the DJ and the crowd are facing the DJ, it is not techno, it is mainstream pop culture, no matter what music you play. At a Sven Vath party in the 90s, the DJ booth was completely boarded up. There was a small slit so he could see us, but we couldn't see him. That was the point. It wasn't about the DJ. The point of techno is people coming together, not giving their energy up to the DJ. The DJ is merely the guide, not the focus. If in a party the DJ is the focus, then that is mainstream values - the opposite of techno culture.

Well said. It's exactly like authoritarian power structures vs. modern democratic ones. The DJ is supposed to be a servant of the people, not their king.

For me it's the artisticness and the fact it doesn't have to follow the formula of a pop song. It can push boundaries with sounds and musical structure. Listening to good techno is an experience. I remember being excited back in the late 2000s when electronic music became more mainstream in the USA again, but the poppification of it hasn't been a good thing. Just compare 2000s Tiesto to today's Tiesto and that speaks for itself. I'm just now starting to rediscover good techno.

Well, one interesting difference that I think I see is the way the DJs perform. The actual Techno DJs have, what looks to be, a much more analog set up which seems to require much more work and focus than the EDM DJs. It would also seem that the Techno DJs are a lot more serious/focused on the music instead of being at the center of attention like the EDM DJs seem to be. The sound is also distinctly different between the two, with EDM tending to be a lot harsher sounding than the Techno featured here. Cool video! Think I've learned something interesting from this.

I'm 43 yrs old been into House and Techno since 1988. Techno was, is and will always be underground. It's electronic music for people that are not and will never be into commercial, trendy bs. Techno is NOT A GIMMICK. EDM, I'm sorry to say was, is and will always be a trending Gimmick for millennials who like to take molly or whatever the hell theyre calling it now and overdo their stupidity. Sorry but it's the truth. Not that we didn't do stupid shit in the 90's NYC golden club era. But I'm sorry to say it...we had way more style , we danced and still dance more creatively and we made it into an actual entity a way of life. To Techno and House heads it's all about the music 100%. To EDM fans it's all about the festival and a bunch of people with glitter being all sloppy , making a mess and making sure they get a bad rep So let's use this comparison. Techno is like Kraftwerk or even Depeche Mode(who have also influenced Techno and House). Refined music with passion and feeling. It's something for ur MIND BODY AND SOUL. EDM is like Miley Cyrus(even though she's really not EDM but she's sloppy) and that idiot who wears the mouse costume. Though I've seen many EDM fans and I must say they r an attractive looking bunch , by the end of their shenanigans they all look like they need to be hosed down for a couple of days. And one more thing TECHNO AND HOUSE IS REALLY NOT FOR EVERYBODY. EITHER U GET IT OR U DONT.
@zk41915 жыл бұрын
(I don't care that this comment is 2 years, I'm still going to argue with you) I'm 19, I've been listening to edm for about 8 years and I've been going to shows/festivals for about 3 years. I listen to Tech House all the way to dubstep. Who cares what genre of edm people listen too, mainstream or not. As long as they enjoy it, who really cares. When it comes to drug use, most people go to shows sober. Aside from alcohol, most people will never take any type of drug because it takes away from the overall experience of a show/event. Right now the majority of shows that I go too are dubstep related, and each show always has an enormous about of energy. also, everyone that I've met at these shows are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I've met people who never listen to dubstep and was convinced by the friends to go to a rave. they've said that I was one of the greatest nights of their lives. while some people don't enjoy dubstep, there are plenty of other edm genres to dive into. While I totally respect your opinion on techno, bashing the next generation of ravers about the music they listen to and the drugs they allegedly do at shows isn't necessary. please do some research before making these assumptions. finally that "idiot in the mouse costume" is considered one of the most important figures in edm history. Deadmau5's innovation with progressive house has shaped EDM to where is it today. for a "pro" like yourself who has been listening to house music for over 20 years, I'm surprised the lack of knowledge you have on Joel Zimmerman's impact on EDM.

You're really not doing EDM justice. As in, watching this, you could get the impression that this bigroom music is pretty sick but often dark sounding music. The reason that these bigroom tracks are complete shit is that they're all made for people that don't like electornic music. As such, they're all so afraid of people getting bored that every single one of them, without exception sounds like 2 or 3 songs shoved together in a terrible soundcloud mashup. Swap the beat section with the obligatory supersaw section that doens't fit with the other part between 2 of these songs and it's literally impossible to tell that it's a mashup all the original songs sound like bad mashups. That's not even getting into all the stupid fills, cheesy vocals and other annoying bullshit that distracts you from actually dancing or even getting into these atrocities. Playing 2 seconds of these doesn't really show why they're bad.

man, when the time of the video was on 6:30 and 7:00 ish, I got a bit more of the difference! but I still want to understand more about electronic music in general, because I consider myself as a lay person in electronics, but I'm musician, my instrument is drums and my total influence is the rock music and metal from the 60's, 70's and etc. having the rolling stones, rush and pink floyd as my biggest references. and now, I'm interested in knowing the field of electronics, but I want something with meaning, thoughtfullness, kind of trippy, reflexive and so on. if someone can give me some real good names in the genre of electronics that fits in that kind of "ideology", I'll be thankfull.

wanna try Drum n Bass genre for instance. look up for Noisia
@Nenko_Music2 жыл бұрын
but you can try Rezz for downtempo electronic music. Try Feed Me too. all these artists are really creative in their own way. But if you want smooth fast tempo trippy style, im nbot sure if Psytrance or Trance Goa has contemproray artists that stepped the game lately, otherwise you can always check on good ol one from the 90's. Besides If u like trippy and slowtempo you have cross genres like Trip Hop which uses a lot of actual real instrument samples and voices, that might be start.

EDM = event driven marketing Music is life and no matter your choice all genres have good and bad examples. What is good for one person may not be good for another. What is good at one time may not be good at another.

Stating that EDM is electronic dance music is true, but not the point here. EDM became a term associated with this new movement of clueless followers that think that cakes being thrown to their faces is legendary and that David Guetta and Tiesto are musical geniuses.. I honestly never met anyone that appreciated that new style of music that had any sort of musical culture (and often no taste in music in general). Not trying to say that everyone that likes the new type and definition of EDM is like that, but the whole shit train that comes with this new trend is loaded with shitty drugs, rich spoiled kids, fake djs, fake producers, disgusting money scams (paying 150$ and often over to go see some "dj" press play and fake), and the list could go on and on.. Though, I'd pay 150 bucks easy to go see aphex or wouldve paid that to witness a live set from LFO... Rip Mark Bell
@cacimaci59626 жыл бұрын
From what i remember..they were saying the same for the techno in the 90,clueless druggies listen to this,so the point here is once again,the bitter old farts dont like the new music,so pull your head of your ass..you are not better..you are bitter,and yes guetta and tiesto maybe not anymore but they were fucking legendary
