The whole point of good 'techno' is its rejection of classic melody in favor of overlapping loops that gradually change over a 32 and 64 beat periods. On the surface, the 4/4 beat is king and there is a lot of repetition, but if you listen closely, no two bars of the track are the same. The track is always evolving. This has an intrinsic psychedelic effect on the human brain, and generates a trance like state that alters your perception of time. Techno is not a linear musical experience it is a single place that is ancient and eternal. Each track is like a slightly different door to that place. But every artist working in techno recognizes that their work is only an entrance to the same thing. This is why good techno is essentially anonymous and is a strange way... humble. Electronic dance music has always been saturated with pop elements. It is an industry thing. They are always trying to create dance music that will cross over as a mainstream pop hit. Then there is the wacky stupid, tasteless stuff, because the music industry and nightclubs attract dicks, and no self respecting pop culture takes itself too seriously.

Techno is a sub-genre like House, Trance, Trap and Dubstep of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) but recently EDM has become a synonymous with Big Room House which is a sub-sub-sub-genre of EDM, sub-sub-genre of House and sub-genre of electro house. I'm not even kidding its actually that confusing.

The term EDM is arround since about 2010. It's mainly an US thing. So no, EDM ist not the main category of electronic music. It is an marketing term of the US music industry. So the term EDM is mainly used for the electronic music which is currently popular in the US. I'm from Switzerland and in my childhood, we had Techno, House and Electro. Everything else was a sub-genre of one of those. And then arround 2010: Boom, every Website started to write about EDM. For example: I listen to Hardstyle. So I say that I listen to Hardstyle. I don't go arround and say that I'm listening to EDM. The early Hardstyle was a mix between Hardcore/Gabber and Trance. So for me it's a sub-genre of Techno and House. And Techno evolved out of House. And Rave music which also evolved out of Techno and House. And I simply hate the term EDM because it makes as much sence to me as if I would threw Rock, Metal and Folk in one bucket and call it SASM (Sing and String Music). *Hears a song with an guitar in it* "I like SASM" (You see where I going there) And please don't put Techno and House on the same level as Dubstep and Trap.

Not an expert, but I’ve always felt that techno is more structured like disco - in the sense that both have a continuous and constant rhythm and beat (builds up slowly) while EDM emphasizes heavy drops and immediate buildups. Could be wrong, but I’d say that other than asthetic sounds, I think that these differences seem the most important.

Bullshit. Techno is not a subgenre EDM. EDM became popular around 2010 in USA and big stadium events while Techno was invented in the 1980' first sounding like monotone, gloomy version of Kraftwerk (what was later called "Electro-Funk") then adapting the House-beat in the second wave, becoming more 4-to-the-floor with resembling sounds from Industrial, EBM (Front 425, Nizer Ebb ect) and avantgarde experimental music (like Kraftwerk "Klingklang"). Techno grown in underground clubs that took place in abandoned industrial buildings whereas House continued the Disco-tradition of the 70's into electronic music and EDM was created for the masses. EDM is actually no genre, it means "electronic dance music" but was labled on a certain style of big-room commercial pop music with great influences from Trance and Electro-House.

dreamyrhodes You are almost correct. EDM is just a category with many different genres. What I tried to simplify is that Techno is in that category. Techno = One genre in the category of EDM. People today need to stop calling Electro House/Pop for EDM. I'm a club DJ with love for all EDM genres, Hardstyle, Techno (yes the real techno), Electro, House, Dubstep and so on.. But if a customer/drunk comes up to me and asks me to play EDM, I ask them what genre (you wanna hear Electro, Dubstep, Hardstyle or what?) and they would just look like a big fat questionmark. Media has alot to do with that. People think EDM is just Avicii/Swedish House Mafia/deadmau5 or even Rihanna and David Guetta (who I can't even call a real DJ btw). So.. to get this ball in motion, we need to spread the awereness of EDM as all the different genres inside of that category! Not arguing that this is EDM and Techno is not.. EDM is an umbrella term for a ton of electronic genres. It represents all music primarily produced on a computer, composed by synthesizers and the likes. Not live instruments in a studio. These are produced for DJs to play at clubs for people to dance to. EDM subgenres can be everything from tropical house to hardstyle. Techno is a subgenre of EDM. If techno has danceable beats then it's EDM. EDM just means electronic dance music. EDM is what is known as an "Umbrella term" and it is purposely non-specific and does not refer to any specific qualities. It just houses types of EDM. Dubstep is EDM, Drum N bass is EDM, Big room is EDM, Trap is EDM, Trance is EDM, House is EDM. That being said...explain to me how techno is NOT edm. And tell me what you think EDM is, because I think you might be confused. All of those examples that you gave of techno are EDM. The only way they would NOT be EDM is if they didn't have some kind of steady beat you can dance to. If it's electronic and you can dance to it then it's EDM. EDM is NOT It's own thing, at all. I think ppl make the difference between EDM and other electronic genres, is because, if techno is good to dance, it's because it is very repetitive, so it happens to make ppl dance. But when David Guetta creates a beat, it is designed to make ppl dance in club, I think this is what's making a difference. idk everyone is talking trash on edm. Both techno and edm are respectable forms of electronic music. Both have massive amounts of effort put into production and creativity. Also if I'm being totally honest the drums in techno music and house can be quite simple where in comparison trap has more complex hip hop beats. I'm not saying one genre is better than the other. In addition to my previous point. The drop actually requires some skill as you have to properly build your track and establish all the musical elements and then the drop is a variation on the main theme of the song adding contrast and intensity to the beat.

It seems there's a lot of debate about what is and isn't EDM. EDM stands for electronic dance music. It's a broad umbrella term for all electronic music. It's like rock, jazz, country, classical, pop, rap, etc. EDM contains a huge variety of different genres, sub genres, and styles Just to name a few...Techno is EDM. Trance is EDM. 90's eurobeat is EDM. Dubstep is EDM. Aggrotech is EDM. Acid house is EDM. Mid tempo bass is EDM. Speedcore is EDM You get the point. The term has been developing a bad reputation with some fans of more underground and obscure genres and sub genres because it's most often associated with recent mainstream music like future bass, big room house, progressive house, etc. Just think of popular electronic music from the last decade. The real problem is that people who don't know a lot about electronic music will often use the term "techno" to describe ALL electronic music. They don't know the difference between actual techno, house, trance, electro, hardcore, etc. To them, it's all techno. People who know the difference sometimes get annoyed by this. It's like how domesticated cats, tigers, lions, leopards, jaguars, bob cats, and cougars are all different types of cats, but imagine that some people starting calling every cat a tiger, whether it was actually a tiger or not, because they really don't know the difference. TLDR: EDM stands for electronic dance music. EDM contains ALL electronic music genres and subgenres.. Techno is a specific EDM/electronic genre. Not all EDM/electronic music is techno.

EDM is just some random noise nobody could care less about when the alcohol level reaches high. Techno: the ambience, the community, the music, the well being, be with many but keep your personality. EDM: just drink and do drugs for the better of your well being and drown in a mass of people you would never want to touch when sober. In case you want to point to this weird video that shows a dude XTC losing his chin and with shaved eye brows, that was not happening on an actual techno event but a 90s rave/EDM party. And beyond that techno is also about DJ culture and DJs and producers showing their personality even when they use the same tunes for their mixes. It is audible art. EDM is non such at all. If we let go our "elitist attitude" you clowns would confuse any person seriously interested in techno music culture. EDM has brought forth nothing I could enjoy for more then two minutes and only so because I might have needed that specific laugh out of this crap.

I've been listening to techno for about 30 years now - and I'm still not bored of the genre, nor has it gotten stale but constantly reinventing the ideas of rhythm and sound. I grew up on the sounds of Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Luke Slater, etc and now I really dig the sounds of Amelie Lens, Rodhad, Paula Temple and so many others. I've seen other genres rise up and fall away, yet I see techno still there, still consistent and still so damn enjoyable... Long live techno.

@@SonderSessions It's really down to sound design, structure of rhythmic elements, etc. Listening to techno from the early 90's (like I did) onwards and step forwards 5 years each time and there's easily discernible differences in the genre. Evolutions like the more deep, hypnotic techno is a more recent progression of the genre (or sub-genre to be picky). The 4/4 may be the main driver, but a lot of techno relies on odd musical timings for things like polymeter or polyrhythm in things like the percussion/synth/bass elements. How these have been implemented has changed over the years too. (And a techno tune may not even be 4/4 either - ASC with a 3/4 non-stomper for example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5DUpayKprCLfdU )

Protip: Techno creates tension by making you feel trapped in a loop, and you wonder if on the next part you'll escape the loop or if the same thing will repeat again. It works because of the release created when something new happens, so songs can be extended with longer repetitions because those will just cause stronger releases. I'm actually not a big fan of pure techno, it could be argued that the Streets of Rage 3 soundtrack was very technoy, but I liked the first two ones better.

This is actually a really accurate description. Techno isnt about 8bar loops. Techno is about 7bar, 10bar, 3bar loops, which are very uncommon in any other genres, so techno music progresses just when you least expect it. Thats why techno is bittersweet.

Techno has a funny way of being both communal and solitary at the same time. It's tribal - lots of people dancing together, but individualistic and introverted - hypnotic, head down, eyes closed, focus is on the sound and rhythm not what other people are doing in the room. I don't think there is any other music that is quite like this. Also, for me at least, an important part of techno is that it's about hearing music you have never heard before. I know there's hits and classics in Techno as there is in all genres but I am most happy listening to a set where I don't recognise any of the tracks.
