My personal favorite boss is the Hollow Knight, as I am a more story-oriented person rather than gameplay, though I do absolutely love the gameplay having beat all bosses on radiant. I think the Hollow Knight transcends any boss battle I’ve ever played and tells a story with no need for words. The beautiful tragic composition of the music, the desperation of the attacks, the infection disgustingly spewing out of his body, the subversion of the players expectations as the Hollow Knight stabs itself violently. All crescendoing in one of my favorite video game moments, when the music stops, the tired Knight looks to you, and you swallow up the infection, replacing him eternally. All this is conveyed with only the medium of a boss battle, and that to be is absolutely brilliant. Plus he gives way to another of my favorite bosses, The Radiance, so points for that too

I love completing games. Ive completed 63 since 2018 when I started purposefully going for 100% (or whatever is the max percent depending on the game). When I started playing Hollow Knight, I knew that I wouldbt be doing that, due to the super hard pantheons, and the steel soul and speedrun achievements, but after going through the 4th pantheon, and LOVING beating the pure vessel, I actually think Ill go through and bet absolite radiance, do steel soul, and do the speedruns. Though I do plan on using guides for steel soul and speedruns

My biggest disagreement with this list is regarding the radiance and absolute radiance placement. As you said the boss isn’t rng in being possible to beat but is rng in how hard it is to beat. I found the pantheon of hallownest a really good satisfying challenge to end the game and while you are almost garuntwed to lose the first time and have to do it again but by the time you do it a second time you will already have mastered almost every other boss. You have a problem with the two endings being locked behind the boss rush but you seem to not see it from the other view I beat the path of pain and found it harder than anything else as in pop you can just give up when you die but for pop you can’t take a break until you’ve beat it which took me four hours and the pain of it made me feel completely drained. Then I finally got to the end and instead of getting any sort of reward you get a journal entry and a small cutscene that explains lore which was so disappointing after doing this thing I took time suffering through to barely get a reward it would be infuriating if the pantheon of hallownest didn’t have an ending or some other huge reward such as that after it would be insulting to ask the player to spend that much time training through the boss rush to barely get a reward. Absolute radiance is my fourth favorite boss in the game as it is really satisfying to fight as it feels fair and give chances to heal in between almost every attack.

I personally believe the Path of Pain's reward was more in-line with what would be expected from an incredibly difficult challenge. I know where you are coming from, because the Path of Pain also took me around 4 hours to beat and was incredibly stressful and draining. However, I chose to complete the Path of Pain not because of what I'd gain from finishing it, but because it was an obstacle I chose to overcome. That's what makes the reward better, in my opinion - since the reward is so minor, the player doesn't feel forced to go through it unless they specifically want to. You didn't do the Path of Pain and struggle for all that time because you REALLY wanted to see that short cutscene, you did it because you wanted to test your platforming skills. I wish the Pantheon of Hallownest was handled the same way; don't make players feel obligated to complete this incredibly difficult challenge, make it an option for them if they want to test their skills. As it stands, the rewards for PoH are so integral to the storyline and overall experience that engaging with it doesn't feel like an optional trial but a required slog. And many players are straight up going to be locked out of it because they simply don't have the skills to beat it. I'd much rather have 99% of players miss out on a lore tablet than a cinematic cutscene, personally. I think Absolute Radiance, independent of anything surrounding it, is a better boss than Radiance. However, I feel the Radiance is better placed within the game with a more reasonable difficulty curve and expectation for the player. Both are great bosses, but I believe the Pantheon of Hallownest is poorly designed and brings the AbsRad experience down because of it. Had Pantheon 5 been a challenge consisting of the 10 hardest bosses or so followed by AbsRad, it would have been equally as difficult as the current iteration without slogging through all the BS of the first 40 fights for half an hour. I would have been more OK with the endings being locked behind that, and then having a purely optional Pantheon 6, with all the bosses, that doesn't give much of anything, and is attempted because you want to test your skill, rather than get any tangible reward. But that's just my opinion, and you don't need to agree with it! :D

@@Technovoid got to admit you got me there in the fact that I didn’t complete the path of pain because I wanted a reward I just did it because I wanted to complete every challenge the game had. However, I don’t think they’re really locking the ending as if you really want to see the ending without doing the challenge you can simply look it up on KZbin and get all of the lore and ending without the challenge. I might have a different opinion if I didn’t actually have more trouble with the pantheon of the knight as the pure vessel was far harder to me than anything else in the game and took me a few days to beat but once I beat it I was relatively skilled enough to beat all the bosses in the poh without much trouble up until absolute radiance which seemed significantly easier than the pure vessel because it was so hard to me. I personally like the idea of having t on fight every boss in the game and think it is a slog though having to fight the weaker enemies and in general the solution I’ve heard that would work the best by far would be to just have benches in the pantheon to keep your progress. I feel since you can get other endings in the game it is fair to have two of them locked behind one of the game’s hardest challenges as they have other endings they can get if they want to just beat the game and if they want to see those endings without doing it they can just search it up so they don’t have to deal with the pantheon.

I agree with the positions in general, but I hate GP Zote. He is in the end a compilation of random bullshit that is doomed to destroy anything in it's way, making the fun part of the fight just being his shenanigans like failing to run and go through the map. Because of his random nature, he is easily in my top 2 difficulty wise, because I can learn NKG and PV to be generally safe and still be punished by mistake, but Zote is just there spitting minions and creating 4 shockwaves every 10 seconds while running around the map

Not executed properly by team cherry. i wish team cherry simply changed pantheon 5 to remove all the weaker versions of fights, such as troupe master grimm and false knight, hornet protecter and soul master, dung defender and broken vessel, and any others i might be forgetting at this moment. removing those bosses would make pantheon 5 still mostly as difficult as it was before, while reducing the time and mental strain it takes each attempt. it would keep the pantheons purpose as a final super challange for the best of the best alive, while allowing those who are slightly more casual but still hardcore enough to do 112 percent the ability to complete it if they decide to, since it wont be as long. perhaps adding 1 more bench would also help with this. 99 percent of the difficulty is during the final 3 fights, with NKG, PV, and AR at the end, so doing this doesnt make it easier to complete, but will make it easier to attempt it and get better. EDIT: forgot crystal guardian, leaving the pantheon with 7 less bosses if we removed weaker varients. this means that instead of 42 bosses, there would only be 35, which is significantly shorter and less mentally challenging. perhaps we could even remove some of the weaker bosses, vengefly king, gruz mother and massive moss charger are all simply larger varients of small enemies so getting rid of those 3 would save time and put the number of bosses at 32, only just over 3 times the size of the normal pantheons.

Unpopular opinion but I honestly hate the pure vessel fight. Didn’t really like the original hollow knight fight either but the massively extended hitboxes make him annoying. Despite having beaten him a few times I can never consistently dodge his triple slash. Try to dash through him? Backswing gets me. Try to dash away as fast as I can? Nope he is faster and will catch me. Try to jump over him? Still end up getting hit. Use desolate dive to get some I frames? Nope doesn’t last long enough and I still take damage. I will sometimes get the distances just right to dodge it but most the time I can’t. It’s honesty the only attack in the entire game where I have this problem that I can’t find the right way to dodge it. So Pure Vessel just becomes a game of “will he die first or will he choose triple slash as his move too many times first” If I can get him to phase 2 I usually have a kill as I can offset his triple slash damage with healing on the explosion and not just staggers. His lunge, sword spray, sword pillars, & void tendrils all are easy to dodge and seem fair.

I resonate with this comment on a spiritual level. One way to dodge it (if I’m not near either ends of the arena) is to double jump at an angle away from him. Using the dash right after the double jump usually isn’t the best idea because you want to have your shade cloak available in case he teleports near you. If there isn’t enough space to run away from the triple slash, I just try dashing through him. I’m not sure why that doesn’t work for you, but I’m almost never hit by the back swing if I just start moving right after I’m behind him. Having sharp shadow obviously helps with this. You can also just jump for height, then use d-dive for the i-frames. It’s important to at least be in the air before you use it. If you aren’t, you’ll slowly rise into the air whilst being vulnerable before you go down and become invincible. Your amount of i-frames will also increase if you are already in the air because it’ll take longer for you to reach the ground. Another way is to just get good at timing your jumps so you don’t lose any noticeable amount of height by the time he’s done the third slash. You can parry his 2nd/3rd slash in case you do lose height. Those last two options aren’t really for me because it feels like your positioning needs be really tight if you just plan on jumping over him normally. I also suck at parrying so that’s not something I’ll try actively doing. If you’re Jesus himself and in the the top .01% of players, you can just stand there and parry all three slashes like an absolute beast 😂 I know your comment isn’t very new, but I hope this can help you in some way!

Challenge is fun, so there's definitely a correlation between fun and difficulty. However, there's hard for the right reasons, and hard for the wrong reasons. Luckily Hollow Knight is a great game that usually gets it right in the "fun difficulty" measurement, but it's not exactly a linear correlation.
