Sony STR-DN1080 Review | Best AVR for Beginners!

Wow! Dolby surround sound sure has change since, I went from analog to digital back in 2005. Yes, I know it was out before that but, I just didn't want to give up my 32" CRT Bubble T.V. It still had life in it. Will I see technology has changed drastically, so I guess without any other choice left, I will (kicking and screaming) retire my old sony-dg500, God bless the old receiver (sniffling), and make the jump this current technology, and buy this (whatchamacallit) Sony STR-DN1080. Guys, DO NOT CHANGE the subwoofer distance the AVR comes up with. Many subwoofers have DSP in them which adds delay. That's why AVRs almost always give out a longer sub distance (like it should). This way, the AVR sends out the signal earlier and cancels out the sub's internal delay.

You could also just measure the furthest seat from you subwoofer and may just get close to the distance the AVR came up with. Well, at least it worked for me.

I've had this receiver for over a year now and it's still the best in its class in regards to sound quality, wattage, capabilities and overall design! I was considering buying a denon receiver that's over a thousand dollars but discovered the upgrades really weren't significant compared to what this receiver can do! It really is a great buy especially for the price!

I have always bought AVR's that were double this price and I can not be any happier with the sony 1080. The clarity is amazing. I have the 5.1 set up and will be upgrading to the 5.1.2 and my speakers have never sounded this good. The wife thinks so too which means its wife approved. Now i am not so sad that my old AVR gave out this year.

The Sony STRDN1080 uses a solid frame and beam chassis for vibration resistance and the lowest sound distortion possible. It also uses specially selected components, fitted with ES grade solder, for class-leading sound quality. In my opinion the Sony STR 1080 sounds better on LOW VOLUME in my acoustically carpeted environment then the denon 3600h and even the Denon 6500H

I compared my extremely low noise Sony with with a new auditioned Denon 3600 plus a open box Denon 6500, it's quite evident that I really like Denon otherwise I wouldn't have auditioned yet another brand new Denon 6500! It really saddened me that the Denons was so loud that I had to return them! Because of my room is acoustically dampened the noise was compounded (click on the red dragon to View) being in a small dampened room as opposed to a big open aired room you probably wouldn't even hear it, or do you?

@@TechnoDad So far so good! It powers my Klipsch r-620f's quite nicely and definitely very friendly to use. A bunch of hours on it already and I am quite pleased with how good the sound is. Also decided on this model to avoid the problem of the 2020/2021 receivers with the chip problem and the price was better on sale. I can't wait to have a full 5.1 surround and see what it can really do

Had to send mine back because even though the GUI is nice when you want it ... you can't stop it from entering the home screen every time you exit a smart app on your TV (when using the arc port for sound). You can stop it doing it if you turn off HDMI control but that also turns off the arc function so no more sound from any TV apps!! Spoke to Sony, they don't seem bothered in updating this problem.... so returned!!

The sony has a great reliability rating. Got mine 2 years ago and I based my purchase off of a Bestbuy Geek squad rep. He said the Sonys hardly ever have problems. I have Klipsch towers, center channel and the surrounds RP502, 2 subs 12" so lots of power and incredible sound for my living room

Subwoofer distance is measured as when the bass reaches the listening position not the physical distance as bass frequencies are slower. Best to leave that as it will cause bass to be ahead of the rest of the intended sound.

790 has ugly GUI, very weird. Like a pixelated version of the 1080 GUI. Why Sony decided not to include this GUI in lesser models, beats me. I'm returning 790 just because of how very basic it's on display settings is. Most of it, you have to do it on the digital display on the unit, itself.

Really good review except calling it for beginners. Sound bars are for beginners. IMO this receiver is more than enough for the majority of people out there. What more would they need? I just think you sold this Sony product short by emphasizing "beginners". 👍🏽

So... if the Bluetooth option has to be set to 'receive'... then does that mean it also has a transmit? if so, why didn't you bother to mention it??? That could be a deal breaker for some people... Just to give you a little heads up, 'mate' I've done my research, I've also got the STR 1080 with a 4K Sony Android TV and if you go out your way to buy a £35 Amazon 4K fire stick and then install it in the SA- CD/CD input the audio will sound twice as good, but also take into account, when you subscribe,if you do? to Spotify KZbin etc your bandwidth will be bigger therefore your audio will be so much improved. It would be nice if you let me know,if you took my advice and if, so what is your opinion?

Pick this avr on sale, for 399 and will pair it with the fluance signature series home theater set. I have the older 1040 model paired with fluance $399 system and I can't turn it up pass 50% before glass and other things start shaking. Sony is a great buy for all around performance.

I just got my 1080 a couple days ago to go with my LG OLED C9 55" 4k tv. I am only using a 3.1 setup for now, as I am buying my speakers a piece at a time. I am a little confused with a couple of things on this unit. I have all my main devices plugged into my LG Oled, and then I run an HDMI out of the LG's eArc port to the Sony's eArc port. Everything works fine as far as the the TV controlling the volume of the receiver and everything, but the receiver seems to change up the signal it gets sometimes. For example, I have Dolby Atmos installed on my Xbox One X. Sometimes when I am on the Xbox menu, the receiver shows "Datmos" on the display, but other times it shows "Dolby Surround". I don't really switch anything on the receiver, it just seems to do it by itself. Then if I switch to a different input, and then go back to the TV where the xbox is coming from, It goes back to DAtmos. Is this normal? Or am I missing something? I am some what new to today's home theater setups, as I have been out of the game for 10 years or so...

Nice video. Why would you recommend Bluetooth streaming over WiFi? IIRC this AVR only has 4.1 Bluetooth so the bandwidth/bit rate can't come close to WiFi streaming. In addition with Chromecast you can have multiple room support and you're not draining your phones battery streaming directly from it & you can cast music, podcast etc from your Google home to the AVR.

Great point. My assessment was due to the fact that for all the other ways of playing music, you have to have the screen on. Playing DSD files from USB thumb drive would be the best for quality, but the TV has to be on to look for music. Connecting via bluetooth, you don't need the TV on. not sure if Chromecast acts in the same fashion.

I agree it would suck if you always had to leave your screen on. to answer your question, no your screen doesn't have to be on for chrome-cast audio to work. Chromecast Audio supports lossless high resolution audio, unlike bluetooth 4.1 IIRC.

I just bought this reciever. Does it matter which sound field I pick? I mainly use it for watching 4k blu rays. Some choices are Dolby Surround, Nueral:X, A.F.D. I just have no clue which is the best one. I obviously want to be listening to Dolby Atmos or whatever is the best sound.

Techno Dad, Great review I got this Avr in the time my Pioneer Elite Sc was in repaired and i was blow away with its sound quality Punch compered to the Pionner,,way way much Big Sound Was really suprised!! Got the Elite back and I have to admit this little Sony really have a better sound then my 2K Elite in theater aspec... I really wanted to try ES series but end up selling the sony and get Denon X4400H Insted due to sale price in the Denon,, But Sony Really impressed me with this Avr ES is pretty Pricey but must be amazing!! I have the 4K Sony Bravia Android TV and the STR 1080, I bought myself Amazon 4K fire stick then I installed it in the input of the sa/cd/cd input of the str 1080 I know what you're thinking why are you bothering to buy a stick when you got an Android TV, well I've done my research and I can confidently tell you it really has worked the sound is now twice as good for less than £35 stick,I hope you will give it a try?

Good review, as expected. Having a GUI is a real PRO for me. I like the ability to setup to play Bluetooth so I can stream my music from my phone without the TV on as my lady hates the TV distraction when we are trying to chill out. I don't know how soon I can add atmos to my setup but is this still the best bang for the buck receiver compared to the Denon and Yamaha you've raved about in previous vids? Thanks

Good morning Bishop! If we are talking about 7 channel AVRs (5.2.2 Atmos) then I'd say the best bang for the buck now is the Denon X3400H (amzn.to/2CMw2ez). It's down to $599 from $999. The Sony STRDN 1080 is still $599, but I think you'll get more with the Denon. Only issue is the GUI. There isn't one on the Denon, but there is an app for your phone/tablet that allows you to control the AVR.

Techno Dad , just found your channel, love your content, Question re Sony 1080 - Can I keep Dolby atmos in media room and use Zone 2 for playing same video/music (sync'ed) in a games room attached to media room like your more recent video with the 7.1 Onyko. When I turn on zone 2, will it just cancel the atmos. Know from experience zone 2 (outdoors) on a older 7.1 sony 1050 has a lag from zone 1 (indoors) when playing same source music.

Based on this review video along with Andrew Robinson's, I picked up the DN1080 yesterday. I should've done that before I had gotten the Sony HTST5000 soundbar+subwoofer for my family room that already had 5 ceiling speakers (2 fronts + 1 center + 2 rears) though they haven't been used in many years due to being replaced by a pair of Sonos wireless speakers + Amazon Echo cuz my family (and I) are just too lazy to interact with the old school Denon receiver whenever we want to watch a movie or listen to some music. Anyway, it turns out that I can do Google Cast as well as Spotify Connect to both the DN1080-powered speakers and the ST5000 soundbar+subwoofer at the same time. Of course, the two sound fields are separate yet overlapping, but with some tweaking of the calibrations and EQs, the resulting sound stage is much fuller and more immersive than just the ST5000 sound+subwoofer alone. Before deciding to keep the DN1080, I still need to get it working with the TV (Sony 8AH 65"). My plan is to connect DN1080's HDMI-A (eARC) port with the TV's eARC port, and then connect DN1080's HDMI-B with one of ST5000's non-eARC HDMI ports. Hopefully, any Dolby Atmos videos from the TV will play on the DN1080-powered speakers as well as the ST5000 soundbar+subwoofer. I know it's probably overkill to have a 5.0 sound field + a 7.1.2 sound field going at the same time, but why not? Especially since we're stuck at home for awhile longer due to COVID-19.

Hello, I have a STR-DN1080 installed, I would like to be able to watch TV without turning on the receiver, but if I connect the cable box directly to TV how can I get the sound through the receiver when desired, is that possible? I don’t see an HDMI OUT on the TV. I have an optical wire connected but don’t know how to get the sound from TV through the receiver. Hope there is a solution for this. I have a Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver. It has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI out. I have an older Bang & Olufsen phono connected to the receiver . I have Bose surround sound speakers with a sub woofer as well as Bose 301 speakers as front speakers. I bought this same receiver to go with my 4K Sony tv. It made my speakers pop while listening to Dolby Atmos. I traded it for a second one with the same issue. I ended up going with a Pioneer Elite and found out the issue was my tv. My Sony TV has a built in app with Dolby Atmos demos but isn’t compatible with it I found out. However using the same Dolby app on my Xbox One S works fine with no popping. Wasn’t the receiver after all.

Hi! Yeah, that's some craziness right there! Troubleshooting problems is a very annoying process. Sometimes you think one piece of gear is the problem, and then it turns out it's something else.

I had this receiver for the last two years and a half. Following a firmware update, I experienced issues with the setup menu not showing. Sony recommended doing a factory reset. I did the factory reset, which ended in the receiver getting stuck in an infinite memory clearing loop. This seems to be a known issue for all of Sony 10XX series receivers, for years, yet the issue isn’t fixed, and Sony doesn’t take responsibility for it. It seems that a factory reset attempt may result in killing the logic board. Now I have a brick with a Sony logo. I ordered a new Denon.

No more atmos for awhile moved the RX-V583 to the front room. integra into the bedroom. was having video problems. never thought to swap out HDMI cable 1st. I requested a replacement unit before trying a new HDMI cable. I have a beam right overhead on 10' ceiling. just ladder and Son in law to mount them. Pair of SVS prime Sats.

Does this receiver work good or great with the Okyo sks HT588 5.1 Dolby atmos speakers, or do I need to buy the bundled version the Onkyo HTS-5805 or the higher priced Onkyo HT-S7805? I would like to buy this receiver. There are even new ones on eBay. An enigma is bothering me! If a device (DVD) that has an hdmi output is connected to, for example, the Video 1 input via hdmi. Is it possible to connect an analog device to the analog input of the Video 1 receiver (video and audio), for example, a VCR? Input settings????? Does the receiver recognize both signals at the same input? I read the user manual where there is no explanation for such a connection. It is only stated. hdmi and input name change. My question is whether it is possible to simultaneously connect to the input with the same name Video 1 (hdm and analog) and whether the receiver automatically recognizes it? Unless! Is it possible to choose hdmi or analog through the menu setting? Does it allow this possibility when several devices are running and the other is not being used at the same time!? I hope you understand my question!

Hi , when I do auto cal it sets my front speakers to large , and sets crossover to 120hz on front and in celing speakers , rears 200hz , is it ok after auto cal to change these to small and 80hz , or will that just mess up what auto cal done . Thanks

Hi Jay! You can't add channels like that with a lower end AVR. A lot of the 9 channel avrs actually process 11 channels, and that way you can add more. All 7 channel AVRs are 7 channels max, so 5.1.2.

Which ones good for music? I am genuinely use to high quality sound even in my car I fitted a system which is amazing. For the home I have a denon 1909. The amp sounds great on films but could be more refined. For music it sounds decent but I can tell its not the same level of sound I am use to as it doesn't have the ability to draw you into the music like a good stereo and can and it lacks that tiny bit of quality needed for genuine audiophile type sound. I don't mind spending upto a grand. I use quad lite home cinema kit which to me is begging for something that can exercise the cones more in stereo.

I’ve just bought this receiver for christmas and installed it almost inmediately. Every thing function as presented by Sony. However the only thing that does not goes by is the SLEEP function. I have tried by all means to program such a characteristic, but it nevera sets.

Hi. I want to add an external amp to this receiver but noticed that there weren't any preamp outs for this... I've heard that I can get an amp that just connects to the front speaker output (Front A output) on the rear of the unit. Is this true? If so, what amp can I use to connect to Front A output. I'm trying to power high end power hungry Cerwin Vega speakers.... and believe me, they want and need power. So, any help would be appreciated greatly!
