Yamaha RX-V583 Review | Best Budget A/V Receiver 2018?

Clicked on the Amazon link, and took a look. Nice budget receiver with good amount of inputs, nice build quality. It has Dolby Atmos, and DTS-X capabilty with a decent amount of power. Would be especially good for someone just getting into the home theater hobby! Great work on the video man!

Youthman i still run a RX-V3900. Its a very well built unit....its kinda right on the boarder of modern AVR. However i bought a yamaha mx630 amp and tried it on my fronts....OMG the difference is insane! Even tho they are both rated at similar power the amplifier just destroys it in every aspect.

Adding a quality power amp can definitely make a significant difference in a setup. When you cram video and audio processing, preamp and amplification in one chassis, there are sacrifices that have to be made.

So, I have the RX-V385 AV receiver and one thing that is confusing and confounding me, when I set the receiver to 'surround' rather than 'bi-amp' I cannot hear the speakers that are connected to the surround terminals. The only way I can hear anything out of those speakers is if the amp 'config' is set to bi-amp, but then I lose any control over the surround speakers. Even if I set to 'surround' and go into the Level menu and change the levels for the surround, still get no sound out of them. Is there some other setting I need to make in this AV receiver? It's really annoying me immensely!!

RX-V385 runs my Altec A8s (15inch/horn 101dB/w@1m) and Fluance SX6 (5inch/dome tweeter 92dB/w) and Formula F12 Sub (12inch 150w rms). I'm using it in Stereo BiAmp mode because 5.1/7.1 always sounds bad compared to stereo as my primary use is music. The Fluance are acting as dual stereo center channel. I definitely don't need more amp. I would have to purposely eq it to take it past -15dB and it goes as far as +16dB. As it is, -15dB is as far as I go, not for worry of blowing the speakers but for need. The Altecs are 500w program pro speakers, they are basically impossible to blow with a home amp. I'd have to eq it to pull all the bright frequencies out in order to run it hard without hurting my ears. I probably could have used an even older and cheaper amp and been fine. Put you money into speakers not amps IMO. I keep the sub at about 50%/80hz xover. No room correction DSP, but I do run boom3d on Windows 10 because the Altec horns are crazy sensitive and you need to turn it down, and darken the sound. I have about $800usd into the Altecs, $150usd for the fluance, $250 for the sub and $200 for the Yammie. If I ever add to this system, the smart play would be to replace the fluance with some more 100dB speakers and a 100dB center channel.

I believe it's the way it should be for the sub distance. I normally add 4 or 5 ft more from actual distance for the sub when I calibrate manually. It makes better bass response in my opinion.

Great review. I would mention that you can go into the advanced settings and change the Independence from 8 to 4/6 to get the best power for the speakers if they support it. Also, take a look at Costco as well. They have the TSR-7810 for $484. I bought it and love it. I had the same issues with the room correction as well. I went and did it manually from 4 different listening positions.

What about the Yamaha RX-V585? I've got this one. Too bad you can't have the Surround Back as well... Why did they tied Surround Back with Presence? Why couldn't they separate the channels?? Is this on all AVRs or only on Yamaha? What would happen if you put both SB and P on the same channels? Will it work? :s

For running surround back and height channels, you'll need a 9 channel AVR. This AVR and the 585 will only process 7 channels. You need an AVR that will process 9 channels for a 7.1.2 setup.

Just a heads up to you and your followers techno dad. Today on Amazon the Onkyo tx-rz820 is on sale for $559.99 down from 799.99. I was asking techno dad about this receiver a few weeks ago and I really want to go ahead and get this receiver unless you or any of your followers think I shouldn’t. RX-V583 now in the front room, Just need to take surround back speakers and put them high up on the front wall for Atmos again. A question will this AVR work if I put Atmos overhead instead of on the wall? I do not see an option for that in speaker set up on the Yamaha.

Hi! You can't use any AVR with a soundbar as the soundbar is already doing some processing. You'll have to get regular speakers to plug into this AVR.

It might be too late but the sony 1080 has issues with popping noise when pausing movies playing in atmost. Loud popping noise when using fast forward. It is now on sony website help forum with no available solutions yet.

Hi! Yes, you can, but you may need to turn it up as the power isn't that much for 5 channels. What tower speakers do you have? Efficient speakers like Klipsch should be fine.

The yamaha sets the distances off from the actual because it is compensating for delays created by the room you are set up in. It sets the delays (distance) so that the sound from each speaker reaches the listening position at the same time. I think that is why the distances set by the yamaha are not the actual distance you'd get if you measure it manually.

I can understand that for the subwoofer, but everything else should be where they are.

I can kinda see it both ways. It just seems to me, like you would want the sound from each speaker, reaching you at the same time. The distance is actually the delay. That is the reasoning behind the Yamaha setting the distances off. The acoustics of any room make the sound bounce around so if you set the distance to the actual, the sound may bounce around and take longer to reach the listener than any other speaker. If the yamaha sets the distance to whatever it needs to get the sound to the listener at the same exact time as the other speakers, it may not be the actual distance, but at least the sound is reaching the listener simultaneously as all other speakers, for a more balanced surround sound.

I think you should try cutting your center .5 to 1 db....since it was prolly bumped up a touch because of distance being off. Let me know if you give it a try! I’m guessing this model doesn’t have preamp out puts tho huh?

Yeah looks like expandability is pretty weak. This unit is just a solid performer for a old home theater in a box. Simple overall.

Jay Just Games I have the str-dn1070 and I wanna upgrade to Atmos. It's gonna be between the str-dn1080 or the str-dh790 that's about to be released. I always buy Sony no matter what! Did you know Sony have Atmos speakers that's also about to be released, the SS-CSE speakers, they matches the Core Series speakers perfectly.

Jay Just Games you should also take a look at the svs prime elevation speakers for Atmos, you can mount them to the wall or ceiling. My friend has a pair and they sound exceptionally good, I want to hear the Sony ss-cse Atmos speakers first and if they're not to my liking, I'm definitely gonna pull the trigger on the svs.

The pioneer vsx-lx102 was at $299. I had that for 15 days and it was great. I needed preouts so I had to return it. I think pioneers audussey is better than yamahas yapo. Just my 2 cents.

Has anyone tried to setup a 5.1 or 7.1 wireless system with this receiver? I am looking at upgrading the receiver and tired of dealing with the wires on the floor. The room for this setup is very awkward as it is a living room on one side and dining room on the other side making it a 24 ft by 24 ft area with a vaulted ceiling at about 14 ft at the center. Because of the space, I am really considering a wireless solution and read that Yamaha also makes the MusicCast 50 and MusicCast 20 to make it at least at 5.1 but would be nicer if it can be setup as a 7.1 system. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

well imo the best budget is the Marantz​ 1608, the Marantz house sound is great and also plays very good as a 2channel. the Yamaha is ok but for me, Yamaha has a thin sound.
