Quickly Enter Current Date and Time in Excel

One cell can receive both date AND time as date is an integer (number of days elapsed since January 1st 1900) and time the fraction of the day that it represents. 12:00 being 0.5 and 18:00 being 0.75 for instance. To enter the current date AND time in one cell do same as you showed but only type a space in between the shortcuts. The integer part is the date, the decimal part is the time of that day. Here, you now have a bona fide timestamp! Works the same under MacOS with Command key instead of Control key.

Time is usually not separate from the date and should be recorded as such. Use CTRL+":", CTRL+";" then Enter. It is odd to use the TIME short cut followed by the DATE short cut. On time cards, people have trouble with elapsed times across midnight because only the TIME has been recorded.

Also, using =NOW() and then hitting enter, selecting the cell again, then hitting the F2 key, then hitting the F9 key, and finally hitting enter again, gives you the Date first followed by the time, which you mentioned in your original comment. You can further refine it by customizing (for instance showing the time as AM/PM) by going into the Custom Numbering format and adding this to the m/d/yyyy h:mm format, so you end up with m/d/yyyy h:mm AM/PM.
