My 10 year old AMD desktop, 4 cores, 8 threads has done a great job over the years, very reliable. But newer versions of photo editors and a desire to do more 4K video with Resolve has me seriously desiring to upgrade. I plan to build my own computer. Frankly, I need help making a parts list. Was looking for Canadian sources of memory for example. Some sites have a huge list of DDR5 memory with various ratings, and I have little confidence in those ratings. Would love prices to fall. Now, I probably don’t need a 12 core CPU, but at 78 I won’t be buying a large number of computers in the future. But, since I can’t even upgrade to Windows 11, I want a decent parts list. I’m sure I’m not the only one who needs your recommendation now, probably with the motherboard at the head of the list. May have missed it but is the new ProArt board announced? By the way, the retail scene in Toronto area reminds me a lot of the same area back in late 50s/60s, which was rare and expensive.

Just wandering. Why do you measure power draw (in watts) and not the actual power consumption (in watthours) for given workload ? It seems to me that total power consumption for a day of typical workload would be more interesting.

@@roman9509 @roman9509 Type this in a search engine and click on the first result: "capframex reducing the soc voltage of the 7950x". At stock (when not loading any EXPO profiles) the SOC voltage is even lower - at ~1.0V which gives even lower power consumption in idle - around the 15-20W range. You should not have a lot of background apps running in the background though and you need to use the "Balanced" power plan in Windows. I won't post any links to screenshots since youtube usually bans comments containing links.

@@Spoudey I doubt it. That was measured with the Blanaced power plan, on a relatively new Windows installation and with non overclocked RAM. Currently it sits at 35-45W now that I have overclocked my RAM (thus increasing SOC voltage which sucks power at idle) and I have a few more apps running constantly in the background. Again, it is possible to make it idle at 15-20W, but not once you start tinkering with RAM speed and loading lots of apps in the background.

Im a noob, but having used the 13700k on the PL2 setting on just gaming this week, I can confirm that the wattage is accurate when idling and when gaming it'll rarely hit over 120 watts. There are moments where it spikes to around 211- 240 watts but it's temporary. I'm currently researching undervolting, messing with msi motherboard modes to limit power, etc. Regardless with the cpu and my 240mm aio while gaming it'll be in the low 40s-high 50s, idle it will be in the 20s-low 30s. That's all related to fan curve though since I don't have them running past 70% unless the cpu hits 90 degrees running R23.

@@anzaklaynimation That depends on if you ares running out of ram or not. I've pushed up to 64GB, which will start causing issues. As for the methodology please consider comparing the actual Energy consumption (Wh), not power consumption (W) through a typical working load scenario. If a render is computed faster with higher power consumption it might still yield lower energy consumption, this is what we pay for (€/kWh). Someone who doesnt turn off their pc without utilising it, will off course consume more energy due to higher Idle power consumption.

Re: AMD for future upgrades, I came to the same conclusion as you regarding future boards/platforms. Just looking at the differences between X370 and X570 offered a lot of insight. What bothers me most is that the newest boards on AMD or Intel barely have any PCIe expansion that are reasonably priced for the features you get. There are not too many ways to upgrade features of your platform in the future. So many lanes have been dedicated to loads of onboard m.2 drives. I know I am probably in the minority but I wish there was a prosumer HEDT-like board with one or two m.2 onboard to the CPU but then dedicate other lanes to high-speed USB/thunderbolt and PCIe expansion.

pci lanes are configurable and usually the same lanes can be used EITHER to plug m2 OR pci card (not both at same time). There is usually plenty of USB and it is either easilly expandable via hub or PCI card. You may want next gen Threadripper if you want more.

The upgradabilty of AMD is not a trivial thing to consider, I have 6pcs for content creation 3 on Ryzen 1st gen and 2 in Intel and 1 Threadripper. The Ryzens we're easily upgraded to Ryzen 5000 and everything is performing great and theres nothing compelling on the x570 mobos over the x370 that justify the upgrade. Just throw in a couple of hundres and you're good to go for another two years. In the case of the Intels 9th gen, they are paperweights now, I had to build complete new systems to upgrade. Same with the Threadripper since the cost of the CPU is still so high that You can get cpu, mobo and ddr5 for the same price

Also both AMD Ryzen 7000 and Intel 12/13th Gen when tweaked a little can maintain 97%+ performance for a modest power drop which makes both setups a vg choice for those wanting to dip into production workloads or do it professionally. But I agree it’s inter3sting that Intel in general can use let’s power at the cpu level 👍😇

There is no efficiency advantage either for AMD, nor is there a cooling advantage. Yeah, future-proving or following a long-term upgrade path for that matter is a mute point. You buy whatever is the overall best deal at the time. For me, that has been the 13700K and a DDR4 motherboard, allowing me to keep my existing RAM kit. I don't see much of a point having DDR5, as of right now as the performance improvement is negligible. There is so much cache on these modern CPUs that it hardly matters. And there's still some upgrade potential left with max. 128 GB RAM capacity and PCIe 5.0 for SSDs. Especially the latter one could be potentially good thanks to direct access by the GPU, completely bypassing RAM and its slow bus, anyway. It feels like RAM is becoming more and more meaningless as NVMe is closing in on its bandwidth and latency as well as bypassing RAM/CPU as a bottleneck. The only roadblock is software compatibility.

The lower idle power is not due to the hybrid core architecture unless you're measuring from the socket, it has to do with the platform. Even with Intel 6000 series idle power was generally around 5-18w from the wall if you were buying OEM(and depending on if it was a full sized desktop or small form factor using the same CPU), and AMD *can* sometimes be the same way from OEM. Idle power usage varries wildly when you start using DIY boards.

In the real world, Intel consuming ~40W less power than AMD on idle won't affect your electricity bill as much as you think. Let me explain: - Let's say you're leaving your PC on idle for 5 hours per day for a year (which is very unlikely). - 1kWh costs about 17 cents (€) on average in Europe. - 13700k will cost you €2.82/year whereas 7900x will cost you €16.44/year. That's only a €13.62 difference per year. - Now consider that AMD has up to 50% better load efficiency than Intel. - Also consider that AMD's 105W Eco mode draws 30% less power than stock on load while only losing a couple of % performance. Do you still think that Intel is the efficiency king for this generation? Some other AMD advantages that will be more relevant in the future: - Ryzen 7000 supports PCIe 5.0 speeds for both the SSD and GPU slots simultaneously while Raptor Lake only supports one PCIe 5.0 slot at a time (if one slot is occupied, the other will lower down to PCIe 4.0). - AMD's AM5 socket life is only beginning while Intel's LGA 1200 socket is dying. - AMD has AVX-512 support while Intel doesn't.

They show peak power. What's being shown here is real world usage which doesn't keep the cpu's at 100% load all the time. Real world use cases see usage fluctuate and between tasks the cpu is nearly idling. Intel drops much lower than amd so even if amd is slightly more efficient max load, it's less efficient and lower loads. And the total overall shows intel more efficient. The problem with charts and everything else, they can always be skewed. If when someone turned on their pc the cpu was automatically 100% load all the time, sure amd would be more efficient. But that's not realistic. Basing everything off 100% power draw is only half the story. Just like nvme drives, the gen 4's are constantly touting 7000-7300mb/s speeds. Which it is, in short bursts. Move larger data sets and watch that 7300mb/s drop to under 3500-3000mb/s once it runs out of faster cache buffer. Or advertising high data speeds while quietly mentioning lower iops.

As importantly I do want my CPU to give me max performance that it is caabable of as I did after all pay the money for the performance. Yes I can and do undervolt but only to the point of max performance at lowest vcore which at a max 1.270v for a sustained 5.4Ghz all P core and 4.4GHz all e-core is exceptional on my 13700K. @@vMaxHeadroom sure but it's a question of diminishing returns. Often we're talking about 50% increases in power usage for 5% gains. (Or 50% savings for a 5% less) A couple of years ago, this was the technique of overclockers but now it's the practice of the manufacturers to ship (especially their flagship products) in this way out-of-the-box because of the halo effect of having their graphics card or CPU at the top of the charts for a few months. Now you're looking at it as cutting the performance you paid for, when a year ago you'd ask whether it was worth the power bill for that tiny return. Nvidia's 4090, and the top parts from Zen 4 and Intel 12 and 13th generation all seem to follow this trend. I really like the approach this channel has taken, because, as he points out, peak usage for burst workloads doesn't match how most people use the computer. I would argue the results @Tech Notice uses aren't close to real world either. For example, when I use Photoshop, most of the time the computer is waiting for me because from the human standpoint 99% of operations are instant, unlike the benchmarks that spend 10 minutes applying the heaviest filters and layer effects, but it's a start

@@theTechNotice It is quite true that AMD consumes more power in single core workloads and idle but if you're going with Intel you still have to get better cooling system and PSU compared to AMD in order to avoid throttling when rendering. Sill, great video.

Is it really such a good idea to support a socket for five years? In defense of the Intel two and out policy, is it really a good idea to spend all that money on a 5950x and put it on a B350 motherboard? CPU technology is not the only thing that is making big leaps every year. I built a 10th generation Intel and it was not gen4 compatible. When I built a 12th gen Intel I put a gen4 drive on it. Who knows what new peripherals will out when I build my next computer?

If you take into account that more than 60% of the CPU sales are for Ryzen 5000 ATM... then yeah, it makes perfectly frigging sense...

Its saved me hundreds of dollars. Ive had the same x370 board since 2017. I could drop a 5900x into it right now and would see the same performance compared to a modern motherboard. Having the choice is what matters to me. A b350 with a 5950x makes a lot of sense if you are on a budget, need the power and don't want to spend hundreds on a x570 with features you don't need or will use.

@@kovafilms The 5900x introduced at 549.00 and the 5950 x introduced for 799.00. I understand they have come down recently, but for the majority of their life they were 549.00 and 799.00 respectively. Maybe they are, but I do not think that they are the type of person that spends those kinds of prices on a CPU, is on a budget and looking to save money on their motherboard. Maybe you are, but I don't think they are. A person who spends 799.00 on a CPU is building a 3,000.00 computer and saving 300.00 on their motherboard does not matter to them. They just want the greatest and the greatest is not an x370.If you were talking about a 5600 that might be different, but you mentioned 5900x and 5950x and not a 5600.

@@evalangley3985 Have you tried to put a Ryzen 5000 series CPU in a 300 series motherboard? I understand it can be done, but it isn't very stable, it isn't easy, and why? I don't know about you, if I am building a computer that uses a 5000 series CPU, I want gen 4 drives and 10gb USB and 300 series motherboards don't have those. My point is CPUs are not the only thing to get better every year. If you are not looking for better, why are you building with a 5000 series CPU? Why spend the money on a new computer when your old computer will do what you want your computer to do?

@@markdalbey I have not tried a 5000 series cpu in a 300 board. Mostly because I already have 3000 series and since the knew AM5 platform is out it would be a waste to buy a 5000. From what I know it's just another bios update. Thats just what I did and then I just dropped in my 3900xt, it works great haha. And my crosshair hero mobo has two 10 gbit usb ports. Yes it doesn't have gen 4 but gen 3 is was pretty fast for me for 6 years haha. I'm just saying you don't have to be on the bleeding edge of tech all the time, unless you got big pockets and time to do that. Regardless unless your that person there's "new tech" all the time, this is for the companies to make profit but realistically you compromise where you need to. I care about raw power as a creator. Usb 4.0 wont stop me from my edit, but live playback and render times will. so if I'm able just to drop in new video cards and CPUs without changing my mobo every other year. Count me in haha.
