@@theTechNotice 16:54 About this part , jay was about to say that since he has so many ssd's in the motherboard, the pcie lanes in the 13900k is stretching to its limits and basically forced the rtx 4090 to run at x8 instead of x16 if one ssd were to go , meaning removed from the motherboard , it would running in x16 again ❤️👍 i don't believe that he has it on the wrong slot 🤔🤷‍♂️

@@theTechNotice This is a pointless argument. Even though the gpu is only operating at pcie 4.0 x8, it's still running at the same speeds as pcie 3.0 x16 slots. Which we all know, or should know, will NOT impact the performance of the 4090. The 4090 can't saturate the full buss of the pcie 3.0 x16. So regardless of where you put the M.2, it's not impacting the performance of the PC at all. Also, yes Jay is beating his head against the wall for getting the M.2's with heatsinks. Although this PC didn't cost him a dime out of pocket.

I've watched a lot of both Tech Notice and Jayz videos putting together my latest (and hopefully last) build. Just placed my orders yesterday. I've learned a lot from both and what a hoot to see this cross-channel video show up the next day! Looking at a build primarily for fairly light level content creation, I've largely gone with the components of $1500 build video with a bump up to the 13600k, 3060ti, and a 750w PSU. I did spend an hour looking for the video where Jay made one comment about an air cooler he's used in bunches of builds... never found it... and then realized I'd wasted an hour trying to find something that was one of the least important factors, since the Peerless Assasin 120 would surely do everything I'd ever need. Especially at my light work loads. But you know.... there are a lot of rabbit holes one can go down looking at putting together a build. I'm grateful for both of you and your channels. I've learned a lot and certainly was able to make much better informed choices due to them. Though admittedly, having nearly zero interest in gaming, Tech Notice is my go to. I'm so grateful you're here with a focus on content creators' decisions.

My gpu runs at X8 anyways - but I am glad it does as it frees up valuable Cpu lanes . Plus the chipset gives even more lanes - but what most people don't know is - when they use these extra lanes - they lose other items ... sata ports , pcie slots and sometimes ... whole nvme slots . Also sometimes the nvme slots will run at X2 instead of X4 . It is good to fully research your motherboard purchase before you commit - as you might be disappointed later and not have quite the machine that you originally planned on .

Ok, I am a fan of Jay's channel but also an IT Pro who has been building PCs for 25 years. I remembered watching this video and was shocked at the mistakes that were made. ESPECIALLY the PCIe lane mistake. I watch all of you guys not to learn but to see all the new tech that I obviously can't just go out and buy (I do buy a lot, though, lol). I am surprised that it made it off the cutting room floor. Many people who do not know how to build a PC on a high level watch him, and it is spreading bad practices. Really surprised he uploaded it, and I can see why you did this video. Again, I am a fan of his channel, but with this one, I was like, WTF?

Before buying the components for a new build, I always spec out all of the hardware, I download the motherboard manual and always check out the NVMe and PCIe slot configuration and any PCIe Lane sharing. I use this information to determine how I am going to configure all of the hardware, and also to finalize my hardware decisions, which might include a processor change or motherboard change. I try to never share PCIe Lanes unless I have no choice, but I tend to buy high-end systems with processors that have more lanes (i7-6950X with 40 Lanes, W7-2495X with 64 Lanes, etc). I also make sure that the GPU slot runs at x16. I always buy Noctua air coolers now, after having a $6000 water cooled system leak and corrode, I don't care if you can get 3 degrees cooler on water, it's not worth my sanity, or the repair bill. Before buying I also watch as many KZbin videos as I can on the hardware, so that I can catch any issues in my setup choices. My most recent system purchase is an Intel Xeon W7-2495X 24-Core 48-Thread, ASUS Pro WS W790 ACE (I chose this over the Asrock W790 due to the bad PCIe slot layout on the Asrock), 512GB (8x64GB) of Kingston DDR5-4800 RDIMM, ASUS ROG STRIX RTX-3090 24GB (I already had this), Noctua NH-U14S cooler, WD Black 2TB NVMe, WD Black 4TB NVMe, backup hard drives, Corsair 5000D Airflow case, Corsair HX-1200 psu, Ducky keyboard, Microsoft mouse, Dell 34-inch wide display, Mackie speakers.

The machine I just built I'm going to use for music production, blender and video editing. I decided to delay getting a gpu right now especially since I'll be using it for music production more than anything, so I also didn't mess around with what I did get. 13700k with an aorus z690 ultra 1.x ddr5 motherboard (doesnt have thunderbolt 4 but has headers to add Thunderbolt cards in), contact frame, Deepcool Assassin IV, 48gb ddr5 6400 CL30 (xmp for now but if I don't upgrade to 128gb later I will run 96gb at stock settings later. 1tb crucial gen4x4 m.2 (which I didn't put in the first spot so that when I do get a gpu I wont be hampering the gpu at all. Also I'll get more storage soon enough.) then I got the Lian Li lancool 216. I ran it for around an hour, then did both multi-core and single-core cinebench testing and got zero thermal throttling on either test.

I can only imagine how many people go up to you guys at the big shows and I don't want to be that guy. 🖖🏽 I appreciate how you done this and I also cringed at the HD capacity. OS and Scratch was okay but unless they're sending it straight to a mass storage NAS/Server I don't understand having that small of a finished product drive. EDIT: I'm on a small budget and have a Crucial MX500 that's 4TB that I use for a project drive. Yeah it's not as "fast" as a M.2 NVMe but i's faster than a spinning drive. Once everything is Final I offload to the NAS anyway.

Just learned something new....reading the block diagram. I have the Gigabyte Aero G X570S and it so happens that the first M.2 slot does not have a switch, so I would get full PCIe Gen 4 speeds while keeping x16 on the GPU...but now I know for my next build to watch out for that! My motherboard came with a single NVME heatsink, given the old drive will move to the 2nd slot under the large GPU and the gen 4 replacing it in the first slot in case of needing access on boot fails, the manufacturer heatsink is a bonus. The config is being tested with an AIO, so no blocking of the NVME slot if it needs removing. Then CPU & board head off to another country, where I install into a duplicate case with an air cooler with headroom on TDP dissipation.

It makes me want to double check my MB manual. I put an M.2 in first slot on an ASUS board for the OS. I also put a project M.2 with its own heat sink in the second slot (all I could find at the time) and left the MB heat sink out. All has been working well for 2 years but makes me wonder if it’s the optimal configuration. Good to see the experts wrestle with these issues too, and work it out.

So prior to 13th gen and possiibly 12th gen Intel cpu's. The M.2 slot issue wasn't a thing. All the motherboards were designed to either run 1 M.2 from the cpu and have a x16 gpu, or run all M.2 from the chipset. I know the x570 and Z590 boards did not have this issue. I don't know if the z690 require the same consideration as the z790's.

I will be buying new CPU + MOBO So should I buy a ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-A GAMING WIFI D4 with Intel i5 13600k or MSI PRO Z790-A WIFI DDR4 with i5 13509, or buy a 790with 13600k and 690 with 13500 or otherwise? BCS 790 is way more cheaper than 690 also same with CPUs 13500 is way cheaper then 13600k here in 🇨🇿. I' let doing gaming streaming, and videos + photo editing. @@-opus I get it, like, it would not make an interesting video for a vast majority of people to try to squeeze some life out of a HEDT by going maxed out ram. Besides, you could always downscale/proxy your footage to edit with and render out your final edited piece using the original footage. It's a bad message to send to PC builders who get into the craft with the expectation that you can always upgrade and expand; ie you don't always have to buy the latest and greatest to achieve acceptable results. I would really like to see the old system vs the new system performance with some Pugetbench scores and render times.

That top slot is gen 5. If you run Gen 5 in x8, it's the same as Gen 4 x16. It makes no difference until Gen 5 GPUs come out.
@geezer2tech154
@geezer2tech154 Жыл бұрын
My understanding is that to run generation 5, you need both a gen 5 drive and a gen 5 slot. If you had a gen 5 drive in that slot, it would run Gen 5 x8 or roughly equivalent to Gen 4 x16. However, you don't have a gen 5 drive in that slot, you have a gen 4 drive running on 8 lanes, so it's gen 4 x8.

I had the DR Pro 4 on my 7950X because I already had it from my previous build. Not sure if there are any mounting problems with that cooler on AM5 (seemed fine) but I will say that it wasn't adequate to keep the 7950X from throttling. I switched to a 360mm AIO and it's much more capable of dealing with the 7950X. I enjoyed your commentary!
@therealsbdunks

I would’ve done the same! The DR Pro 4 excels in near silent/quiet operations but sacrifices high end cooling by doing that. Especially with the 7000 series processors and their TJmax. In the most recent air cooling review that he did, based off the results, for strictly air cooling I wouldn’t choose outside the U12a or Peerless assassin (if you want to save money, still amazing bang for buck on this guy wow). AIO will most often yield cooler in all scenarios

depends on your ambient and case. I have a 7950X cooled by a Noctua NH-D15 in a Fractal Torrent case in a part of the world that doesn't get too hot, certainly not at this time of year (and depending on global warming!). It hits 95C but doesn't throttle. I use AIOs with Intel but so far AMD high-end chips - 5950X and 7950X - are fine with air coolers, if a bit noisy at full tilt (the 5950X system is even using a smaller Noctua NH-U12A and it's also fine, but the 5950X is a relative power-sipper compared to other modern processors). I'll swap out the NH-D15 for an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 if it becomes necessary, but the whole point of the Torrent case is that it's an airflow hero. And the big Noctua usually only cedes a couple degrees max to an AIO.

If you limit the CPU to Intel recommended voltage (so, stop the mobo from goosing it to 300+ watts) are you really leaving performance behind? ISTM those power spikes are short lived, add a lot to heat and do little for real world performance. If you watch videos of people under-volting their CPU they lose very little in performance and gain a lot in heat savings making air cooling very workable. IIRC I saw a video where someone did as above and lost six seconds on a 10 minute render. No one will notice that but the system ran much, much cooler.

And my mb wasn't any near expensive as the one mentioned in the video. It's Gigabyte Z790 GAMING X AX.. paired with i5 13500 processor. @@theTechNotice if that is the case, I would gladly trade the the difference between Gen 4's 6000-7000MB/s and Gen5's 10-12k for having a full potential of the GPU. Even without having to make a choice, the fact that gen 4 nvmes are getting really cheap, (I got my 2tb 850x for under 200€) and Gen5 are much more prone to overheating and likely to thermally throttle.. there is a question, is it really worth it going the early adopter route at this point. And what is the cost of it. Anyhow, thanks for the reply, I myself watched the OG video and screamed to the monitor. I was quite surprised when I saw your reaction. And the fact he always uses BeQuiet stuff is just honoring the sponsors. At least he should disclose it. As they are far from optimal. Cheers

A 13500 cpu has 20 lanes - 16 for the graphics card and 4 for the nvme in the first slot . All other lanes for the other nvmes are provided by the chipset . In certain cases - when other pcie slots are used - the other nvme slot are either unusable or limited - example > Too many lanes being used so nvme speed is pcie 4.0 X2 ... instead of Pcie 4.0 X4 ... Also - some sata ports will also be disabled if all the nvme slots are used . Basically you have to check with the motherboard manufacturer to find these limitations . You might have half speed nvme's that you didn't even know about ?

Taken directly of the Gigabyte page and these are the chipset specs for your motherboard. 2 x M.2 connectors (Socket 3, M key, type 22110/2280 PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 SSD support) (M2P_SB, M2Q_SB) 1 x M.2 connector (Socket 3, M key, type 22110/2280 SATA and PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 SSD support) (M2M_SB) You can see the X2 on all of them - which means that the will run at half speed if you use too many lanes for other items . Usually involves Sata or Pcie slots being used ...

@@creed5248 hmm.. define too many? I just tested the drives, every single performs at the full speed. Although, I have the WD850x at m2_CPU and pcie_3 slots (6928 read / 6669 write). The rest are lower speed m2 drives I use for storage (3600/3000 r/w tested). Although if your observation is correct. Theoretically pcie4x2 would equal to 4000MBps, which still covers the maximum bandwidth of the implemented drives. I have one more samsung 980 lying around, and I'm tempted now to switch and measure if the speed will be actually limited to 4000. As for the SATA goes, I mentioned above that one m2 shares bandwidth with couple of sata ports, and using it renders them unusable. But I don't use any sata storage anyway.
