Part of the problem is it doesn't cater to the VR enthusiast like other headsets have in the past. The lack of native controllers and connecting to a Mac or PC for wireless PCVR (not screen sharing) was a huge miss for Apple. Their reluctance to call it "VR" is also part of the problem along with the $3,500+ price. The Quest 3 is 85-90% of what the Vision Pro is at 1/7th the price.

And yet IDC reports that the Vision Pro has rocketed to number two with 17% market share second only to the Quest 3 on 37% market share in Q1 of this year despite only being available in the USA and despite launching only 3.5 months after that quest 3. And Apple has maintained the same level of sales in Q2 despite again only being available in the USA. Second would be as a media player when you’re by yourself because nobody wants to watch TV with somebody wearing it. Third is 360 video playback. 99% of the time when I reach for my computer I also reach for my AVP. I have a Google meet meeting every morning that they want your camera on, AVP put my persona up so I don’t have to spend my time getting ready to be on camera. One of the best computer investments I’ve ever made.

The lack of video/data input for the Apple Vision Pro is a HUGE negative. If I could could connect directly to external devices like my PS5 or PC mine would see so much more use. Everyone who experiences the Vision Pro says the cinema movie watching experience is the best feature, so why they excluded gaming from external devices is just mind boggling. Sure we can connect consoles and PCs wirelessly with 3rd party apps, but the resolution is limited to 1080p for PS5 (yes, the resolution created in 2005 🤦), and you have to deal with some compression and latency. If Apple had made the battery a passthrough device that allowed video and data input it would have increased so much functionality for the device, not just for gaming but as a legitimate workstation as well. The Apple Vision Pro would hands down be the best gaming experience device if it simply allowed input. Instead, Apple is keeping things within walls and expecting us to use apps from a super weak library in the app store, of which 99% are just terrible. It's such a let down because it's a fully capable device, but again it's being held back due to Apple's decisions. The frustrating part is that these are issues that could be fixed for the current Vision Pro, but it feels at this rate that Apple is focused on making the next generation better and leaving this one to die.

Agreed. The $3,500 price reflects the FACT that the 1st gen Apple Vision Pro was never intended to sell a lot of units at all because it was never targeted at average consumers to begin with.
@vinapocalypse2 ай бұрын
Apple has very long-term ideas of where it wants computing to go. To get there, you define a goal, then release products which get you towards that goal, adjusting as needed to get there. I knew the iPhone when it premiered was going to be a game-changer for portable computing but I didn't know how much; I didn't buy one though until the 3g when it felt to me it had finally had enough time to cook. At this point they have pretty much exhausted where smartphones as we know them can go; it will be mostly iterative (faster hardware, bigger/better software). The Vision feels the same way to me - a publicly available prototype for where they want to get to in the long term. It will be at least a coupe more generations before it will be ready for popular adoption. Right now it is an under-cooked replacement for a phone but seems to be a really interesting replacement for desktop computing and dealing with multiple displays. A couple more generations it might be ready for replacing or supplementing mobile computing screens. 10 years after that, who knows?

I'll tell you the biggest problem with this headset; it's the price! I am an absolute believer of this device, and am a total fanboy of the tech! So I bought a meta quest 3 back in February, and ever since the v68 update came out, refining the free floating window experience, this thing does a solid 90% of what the Apple vision pro does. It also plays games that are 100% better than anything that the AVP has to offer. And the price tag for the AVP is not unaffordable for me, but spending that much money on a device that has a cheaper competitor at 1/5 the price is just Ludacris. Even being able to afford it, I know that I can put that money towards something else more beneficial since a cheaper device can accomplish most of the same tasks. So if someone like me, that believes in the tech, and can afford the device without going bankrupt, won't buy it, then no one is buying this thing. Apple must lower the price to get a majority of techies on board first, and then make it lighter and smaller in order to appeal to the masses.

I'm not sure if you're a true VR veteran or if this is your first foray into VR. If it was your first, consider yourself very privileged to have experienced some of the best hardware ever in VR. It's a gen 1 developmental product. Those of us who are VR veterans and understand the tech, we knew this thing would be good, but of course the passthrough isn't going to be like real life, and of course there's going to be glare inherent to pancake optics. Regardless, there's some things about the AVP that are magical. With that said, you could watch all the immersive content in a few hours, and there still isn't much to do on the headset. That's where I feel like it was bait and switchy for the asking price. It's not a failure, you just gotta realize VR still hasn't hit mainstream. It will eventually. In the gaming realm, I truly don't see how people prefer sitting at a desk tapping keys like a monkey when you can stand and move and be "in" the game. VR gaming is just so much better. Can't do any of that on AVP though unless you want to start messing with beta ALVR software, etc.

I have the 3D model from my CAD software converted to USDZ which natively opens in the Vision Pro (and any Apple device) without the need for an app. I don’t even have my clients use guest mode. I stream the VP’s view to my laptop and coach them through it. The second, I have set up a very nice mobile office in my SUV. I move the front seats forward and have a very roomy area to sit in in the back seats. I have a DJI Power 1000 for a TON of power for laptop, VP, etc., and I work under shade trees at the beach or in the mountains (I live in Hawaii so they’re quick to get to). I then open my laptop into 4K mode on the VP virtual monitor and have my text, email, music and browser apps surrounding it… with enough open space to see the beach view beyond. Perhaps if the press hadn’t mercilessly mocked the people who chose to try Google Glass (and killing the program in the process) we wouldn’t be a decade and a half behind where we should be in wearables.

They should spend more time making what we have (and for sure use and carry), better. A persistent personal AI with memory that can he used across all devices. The first company that creates "her"...will sell all the subscriptions imaginable. How much would you pay? Attaching something to my face is not happening. A watch and earbud is the way to go. I hope I'm alive when this happens.

Smart Glasses are the endgame. That's what will sell 10's of millions and eventually 100's of millions over time. Not a headset.

I think they should’ve marketed this to med schools, nursing schools, something like that exclusively. Everyday people don’t really have a need for it to justify paying that amount.

This headset was never targeted at average people to begin with. The $3,500 price reflects that fact.

Even as someone who's super into VR and hopes it'll reach Ready Player One levels of tech one day, I absolutely despise this product. The fact that you can't even customize your "persona" on the AVP to make it look exactly how you want is the ultimate dealbreaker for me. It just pisses me off how it HAS to be based on your real face. Seriously, I'm ugly asf and wanna be able to escape that by using VR. The Quest 3 on the other hand, allows you to choose literally everything about how your avatar looks. You can be as hot and pretty of a girl as you want, which is the biggest reason I even use the Quest in the first place, ngl. While I do feel like the Meta avatars are a bit too cartoonish, I'll still take them over the restrictive personas on the AVP anyday. Until Apple gives us full customization over our avatar appearances like Meta, I will never, EVER put my hands anywhere near this pos

Apple Vision Pro isnt dead but we have to wait it hasn’t even been available to buy for a year yet and just like most of the products apple has made even they have said that in the beginning everyone thought those products would fail. But, now they have over three trillion dollars so I think we just have to wait even if that takes years.
@jessel.86972 ай бұрын
Apple knows what it is doing. It is still developing updates for this product. This means that Apple still sees the Vision Pro as a viable product. The Vision Pro is a marketing product meant to build interest around a future Apple product or product category. Apple in no way thought that such an expensive product would sell in large volume. Remember this isn't Apples first time selling a product to a consumer. They are among the most profitable companies on the face of the earth. They didnt get there by accident.

Get the Apple Vision Pro 2 which would go for less but the amount of care they put into it will be a same as the amount you paid for it…. Which would be less in terms of giving a damn about a product that was cared for to a certain degree in the first version of it which is why it cost so much but why should I buy it if it does not come with KZbin let alone Netflix

Seems to me that your making lots of assumptions based on rumour. That is rumour probably designed to get people talking about it. Undeniably, this is a difficult product to sell as it is simply too expensive. However, it is also the beginning, whereas your analogy was the end. Most who look at it like what they see, just won’t buy it. They will probably buy the cheaper version. There will be a future for this, but Apple Is playing a long game.

its hard to purchase apple vision pro when an AR headset is a toy and not a necessity. it fits in the "would be nice" category. A cell phone is a necessity, and people are willing to pay big money for a premium necessity such as an iPhone. it fits in the "must have" category. The same could be said for a desktop/laptop. A tablet is neither a toy (for adults anyway) nor a necessity; it fits in the "could use" category. I would likely buy the Vision Pro if the price dropped to $1,000.00. But even then, it is a hard pill to swallow because it is not a "must have" or "could use" category. The new[er] HomePod is the same category. Why spend $350 on a smart speaker when the $99 mini does exactly what I need it to? I cannot justify spending $350 on the HomePod, but I can justify spending $1,200 on an iPhone.

Maybe to you and I but even at $1,000 or less it still wouldn't sell very well because most people don't want to wear a HEADSET. If anything, they want actual Smart Glasses which are still not a reality. Maybe in the year 2035.
@sephiroth4543Ай бұрын
This is just a silly way to try and get more views. The product is expensive no doubt but it has it's uses. What I like is how it pushes other companies like Meta to release headsets with Oled and high resolution at a minimum. This can only be good for VR space. Apple need to release more software and open it up for games but I wouldn't say it's a flop. I use mine daily to play my PC games eveywhere in the house and I also enjoy watching 3D movies and content in general. Obviously they can improve few things and the price needs to come down but this type of sensationalist headline is silly.

I think it would have been better to forego the cutting-edge features and make it a $400 headset than to max it out at a price point that the vast majority of consumers cannot afford.
@PSYCHOV3N0M2 ай бұрын
A $400 Apple headset wouldn't impress anyone. Not even the current Apple Vision Pro has RETINA-level displays. The resolution on each display is about HALF of what it needs to be JUST to achieve RETINA-level clarity. The $3,500 price isn't the reason why Apple Vision Pro isn't selling. It can cost $1,000 or less and it still wouldn't sell a ton of units because most people don't want to wear a HEADSET. If anything, they want Smart Glasses and we're just not there yet. MAYBE in the year 2035.

Your mistake is thinking that the Apple Vision Pro hasn't sold well because of the $3,500 starting price. That's not true at all. The reasons why it hasn't sold well are: 1. Most people don't want to wear a HEADSET. It doesn't matter if the price is $1,000 or less and has an Apple logo on it. Most people just don't care for this specific product category. 2. These aren't Smart Glasses. Once ACTUAL Smart Glasses become a reality, then we'll see those become mainstream though that doesn't mean that Smart Glasses will kill smartphones.
