Very nice work, great patience. I got mine here in Panama a few months ago and planted the cuttings directly to the ground. Humidity was no problem this year and all did very well. These plants over here are ubiquitous in areas of humid vegetation, it's almost as if you recognize one you just grab a piece and plant it at home. I love propagating with perlite. I hardly ever have failure and when I do it's because it was too moist. You had too much water in your cup. You get better results if you use bottom heat and only a fraction of an inch of water. I mean like a teaspoon of water to a pint jar of perlite, just enough to settle the dust.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 4 жыл бұрын
i agree, it did leach up the side because it got kinda goopy so it looked like a lot more but i agree

As long as the perlite hasn't grown algae or the plant wasn't diseased. You can also add it to the soil that you pot your plant up in. I usually do this.

I think it's pretty obvious at this point philodendrons prop better the closer the conditions are to their natural habitat since sphagnum moss always does so well second to soil. Now I'm curious how they would do being propped in orchid bark since it would be the best of both worlds and growing up tree bark is what they do in nature.
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 4 жыл бұрын
i will do another experiment, once I stuffed them in a bin for high humidity the air roots really grew big and fluffy, if they had some moist bark to grab onto they would have been in heaven

Good video. I like how you used the different kinds of medium. I've perlite effective but even with a home made humidity dome it's such a bother to make sure it says moist. I have ended up simply using soil, although that can be a bit messier when checking on roots. Any thoughts on why water propogation isn't as effective? were you using bottled or tap water? I avoid water propagation because my tap water has chloramine.
@TechplantChannel

i think just some of these slower harder to grow aroids dont like being in water since they grow up trees. Im not sure, ive just noticed some of the more "rare" plants of mine dont react to well very well
@thewittyusername
@thewittyusername 4 жыл бұрын
They're always going to thrive in situations that are closer to how they grow in nature(up mossy trees and rocks). Philodendrons don't normally grow in water so it's not surprising it's by far the worst method. It's only effective for people who lack patience and want to see the roots start for instant gratification at the expense of the overall health of the plant.
