My thoughts on the Surface 3 4GB model after 4 days use

My thoughts on the new Atom Cherry Trail powered Surface 3 after 5 days of non stop use. Can it be a daily driver? I think it can..Does it feel like an Atom? Not really! See our full Surface 3 review here: techtablets.com...
The Surface 3 isn't 100% smooth sailing, I keep getting Bluetooth connection issues and the type cover not working at all when connected up (Unknown USB deivce). I've encountered this issue a few times now and I have only had my Surface 3 for 4 days. Why have none of the top tech review sites reported this issue? Or is it just me?

I'm still using the Surface 3 to this day. The Insider preview of windows 10 really shines on it, the model I have is the 64gb 4gb RAM 4GLTE as long as I have coverage I can stay online anywhere. Battery life is really good after all these years it's been out. Best investment I'VE DONE! wont handle video editing well but that 4gb of RAM will give you a run for your money with Photoshop etc. Pen is awesome too.

I have 2 of these...bought second one in 2019. best investment ever... surface go is wayyyyyy to small. Will never upgrade unless they make another version of the surface 3 (same size) Still to this day it’s more portable then The pros. Use: school, emails, business related work, web browsing, movies

It has many great qualities, you missed the pen interface for taking notes on OneNote. The pen and OneNote make it an even better student device. Also a professional device where you need to take notes through out the day. If you embrace taking notes with the pen and factor in the organization you get with OneNote, you realize what this machine is all about.

Watching it on my ms3.. Love this thing.. just got it today.. its fast n snappy n all things a windows tablet laptop should be.. n its the perfect size for me, that's y I bought this over the pro 3 version.. The internets a lil slow at times but otherwise its a super machine..

I returned the 2GB version for the 4. The 2 just loaded sites like CNN way too slowly. I find the pro 3 with an I3 is quicker surfing the web than my samsung chronos 7 with an I7 processor. My Chronos 7 is now used for storage and video editing, Games as well but my surface is used for everything else.

I am buying a surface 3 to replace an ipad air 2 .. so usage will mainly be media consumption and browsing but also some office work (mainly excel and word). Do you think 2GB version is enough? I might try remix os on it too as I really like the android youtube app which is imo far more superior than youtube in a browser when using a tablet. Price of 2GB + type cover = price of 4GB without type cover

Mo Moo Yes maybe, Surface 2 screen is not as good as this or the design and build, BUT it will be much faster in everything over this S3.

Why would you get the LTE model? If I want internet on the road I'll hotspot it from my phone and connect my surface through that. Maybe people don't have a phone that can do that? Maybe it's just me. If you have one please let me know why you got the LTE

+shut your face! Just consider that sometimes people don't want to use their phone and its resources for their tablet. While you can hotspot, I would personally rather leave my phone in standby when on the road to conserve as much battery as possible while using LTE for my tablet so my phone stays as is. To me, the phone hotspot is more of an emergency or extra feature.

one thing i am wondering since surface 3 was anounced ... how does it stack up against the surface 2? that is what i am interested in. of course it is slower than the pro 3 but i have a surface 2 (that i like very much) so i am thinking about upgrading to surface 3. i do not care for the x86 processor per se i use my tablet mainly for office work, surfing, some webgames and movie viewing, so i do not need the option to install a ton of x86 programs. all i care about is: is the surface 3 faster than the surface 2 in all respects and how much? but no one pits the two against one another, always it is a comparison between full laptops or the surface pro 3 which the atom based tablet has no hope of winning anyway ... can someone have som basic tests running (java, 3dmark app, etc. i know the options are limited for cross arm/x86) and show those off please?

You say it's a lot of money for a tablet (depite taking the keyboard into the equation) but I look at it this way. 128gb ipad air 2 - £559 128gb Surface 3 - £499 At those price points, there really isn't a debate unless you're that invested into Apple. For the price there is simply nothing better.

hughlle You're right, I didn't think about Apple products which are also expensive. Compared to them, the Surface 3 doesn't see as bad. Still we so much more here in Europe for tech.

Surface 3 LTE SMS Messages: Have you checked this out? I have a DATA/SMS SIM for my LTE Surface 3. When I get messages in SMS, they show up in the Surface 'Charm' on Metro screen, but I don't know how to respond. Seems such application doesn't allow, but reports SMS receipts Any idea on this?

Leona Arcellana Chi T300 has a Core M and is faster. But the Surface has a full usb 3 port and better over all design I think. I would personally go for the Surface 3 if you don't need Core M power.

Thanks! Would the surface 3 last to at least 3 years? Most people say that apple products are premium built and meant to last, but they're way too overpriced! I hope Microsoft's products can last as long and still perform without lags three tears along the line.

40.4GB with the latest Windows build, June 2019. [I just picked up two Surface 3s for $129USD each] Just posting this info for anyone sourcing /using one of these in the present day. It's 34.4GB if you set a proper sized page file to run creative software. [1.5x physical RAM is the optimal setting in these cases, not the much lower system allocated number.] These of course are the 64GB eMMC HDD model, obviously double the pre page file allocation space number for the 128GB units.

Revillution.com Yes 100%, but only if you don't need the Pro 3's power. I've owned both and for my needs I find the Atom Surface 3 is much better. Better size, better kick stand and better battery life.

To be fair Chrome is a resource hog like Firefox used to be and somewhat still is a better test would have been with the I.E Live version or I.E desktop version - not a fan of chrome on tablets and even as of 3 months ago on desktops the dam thing is buggy as shit overall great vid

TechTablets.com Yeah I was using Firefox from day one but about around 2010 really started using Chrome because Firefox was a resource hog and alwasy crashing I piggy backed over to Opera but than eventually Chrome which finally was ok but now that is suffering the same thing as Firefox once did . Firefox has gotten over the hump for sure but I'm really blown away of how well I.E works on Win 10 tester and Project Sparten / Windows Edge

I just got the 128 gig version with the keyboard (but no pen) for $579 on the MS black friday sale. Otherwise I probably would have just went without. They keyboard is idiotically overpriced.

+Noah Andrew To be fair, it's only slightly more expensive than getting a logitech keyboard for a tablet (which can cost like 70$ or so) and it is much better quality and a mouse track (which not all logitech's have). Though, it should DEFINITELY be added for free with the pro, as that is more of a laptop than the normal Surface.

Chrome has become a horrible resourse hog, a far cry from where it started as a small fast browser. Use Firefox and you'll probably get much better performance.
