It's been like that for years with Asus. Only Strix-E and above has the seven segment display. The good thing is that other brands such as MSI / GB / Asrock started to implement them on their mid range boards. Asus didn't want to follow the trend it seems.

@@GerardFreeman every motherboard over 300$ is a waste of money (unless you have very specific use case, but it is 0.01% of people). You can buy really nice AM5 motherboards for 150$. I have no idea how Intel will compete with AMD this year, AMD is better in almost every aspect. Also last gen of Intel will be around providing better price to performance while having the same performance lol.

The reason they leave one m.2 without heatsink is so if you have a m.2 with inbuilt/custom heatsink u can use it, which is actually a good thing imo. Great round up though, just watched the msi one too!

Just FYI: The Hero can only use 4 m.2 slots without limiting its PCIEx16 slot to x8. The F can do 5, the E can do 6 m.2 ports without limiting the PCIE x16 slot.

Something worth mentioning, AFAIC, is the number of supported thermal sensors. Placing temperature probes at strategic places in the case (e.g., on a tower cooler, or at the GPU backplate) can give one really nice smooth fan control (avoiding spikes from internal CPU sensors, for instance).

I would probably pick the Asus Prime Z890-P WIFI as the most basic, like the feature set on this one better for price comparison it is quite a bit less expensive than the Tuf version. I was thinking about getting ASUS again, but disappointed in the feature set compared to other manufacturers and now leaning towards a Gigabyte board due to addition of LED readouts and adding Start and reset buttons on their motherboards. Asus appears to be wanting to still charge extra for these features which should be standard

After buying an Asus MB in 2023 and having an issue with Intel 219 Ethernet controller where ASUS did absolutely nothing to solve the problem, but continued to sell the same MB even 1 year later on amazon (i ordered one and returned it because my was NEWER in some way than the one that arrived one year later) I would never every buy an ASUS MB anymore. If your monitor is off and you turn on the machine - the white light will glow all the freaking time without the possibility to turn this light off. Such crap that cost too much now in the day. ASUS from couple of years ago would been a fined quality product but this today...thank you no thank you.

Instead of US prices been 1/2 as much so the 870e hero is US700 but is $1300 in Oz ( should $1050 ). In Australia we pay a huge markup . I just love having postcodes on my motherboard and I see MSI has one on its Tomahawk 870e which the Tomahawk series never use to have. Today just finished putting the Carbon 870e together with a 7950x I had ( waiting for 9800x3d ) and putting Win11 24H2 on it .... hope to save a fortune in electricity costs, well maybe a $100 or so per year

i watched the official livestream where someone asked a similar question, he said the "Dark Hero" name was only used INSTEAD of hero (there was no regular Hero that year) because 14th gen (raptor lake) was a refresh! so you likely won't see another dark hero unless intel does another refresh cpu! there was also no 'extreme' board that year for the same reason, the only boards missing from this lineup that may still appear in the coming months (or may be skipped this year) are the ProArt & Formula boards.

I feel like once you start daisy chaining your monitors, it's hard to go back. Tb4 I can't get above 85hz for 2 monitors at the same time it seems. Also the Oculink thing as an alternative solution intrigues me. Intel needs to keep up. I just want options. :)

These boards are starting to feel like the behemoth US luxury automobiles of the 1970's, where every plush door had a mostly useless ash tray, lighter and reading lamp. I wonder if supermicro is going to come out with a board that just does away with all the glitz and unnecessary power stages and concentrates on high end PCIe, M.2, USB, and a10G lan.

ASUS has a Thunderbolt 5 add on card and it uses on the TUF board in the illustration. Can you confirm if the add on card is compatible with any of the boards, like the previous Thunderbolt 4 add on card there next to no documentation on compatibility and no actual advertising that it exists. A lot of people who bought ASUS or MSI motherboards don't even realize they can get a Thunderbolt 4 add on card.

Not sure were you got your math at but 11months ago I bought the z790-f wifi and the price was 269.99 and now the z890-f wifi is 499.99 the 230.00 difference almost double, I bought it in oct the day intel released the i9-14900k. thanks for sharing

One of them will be possible my next motherboard from Asus. I always had Asus motherboards. Edit: I wouldn't mind the 5Gigabit port because most in my country is 1gbps speed and that's maximum for now. Couple of years later, it will go higher but i see no problem if you can hold it for at least 10 years.

The Z890 ProArt seems a bit underwhelming, especially at its price.. I have the ProArt case on standby for my new build. But leaning towards the ASRock Taichi or Taichi OCF. Maximus Hero may be my other option, depending on price, and features. I'd definitely like to get a CAMM2 motherboard if possible though. Heard they're supposed to launch before the end of the year. Be holding off until they show up to the scene. I'd plan on doing some overclocking with the 285k Air Cooled + CAMM2. I've always been an enthusiast for air cooling my systems.

With most of these boards I'm worried about gpu backplate clearance. A lot of these boards have a massive M.2 heatsink which will get in the way of the GPU backplate if you have a thick one

I'm getting the extreme board no matter what, where I'm torn is if I should go intel or amd. A ryzen 9900x3d will go great with my 5090 but at for gaming but I'll be doing work in blender, premiere and Photoshop too so Intel might be better.

Just curious, why would you pick the Extreme specifically? As for the CPU choice. I'd wait at least a week or two to see what AMD does, and to see if Intel/MS can sort out some of these issues we're seeing. I do expect the situation to change still in the coming weeks.
