Notes: - I wanted to get MSFS 2024 in here properly, but I (like many others) had issues with it at launch. So I kept it out of the comparison, but I did include the average results in the 1080p/1440p/4K summaries. MSFS fans, please let me know if I should move to 2024 completely, or keep both versions of the game for now? - 10:00 There is an error in the graph. Obviously the 9800X3D is on the X870E Hero, the 265K on the Z890 Hero. I wouldn't recommend trying it the other way around ;)

Would be really insightful to see if this new CPU can allow me to hit 144+/240+/360+ fps targets at almost all times? CPU comparison in 4k is completely misleading! For example check old video with 5800x vs 5800x3d paired with 3090. The difference there will be minor and some people would say the CPUs perform the same. However, with in new more CPU demaning titles and 4090 the gap between 5800x and 5800x3d is HUGE even in 4k, its as big as used to be 3090 in 1080 resolution. So folks who dont understand why CPUs are tested in 1080p try to understand the topic better PLS

I'm sure he knows why CPUs are tested at 1080p and it should be like that, but I too still want to see the 1440p and 4K results for reference and as you can see there were noticable differences even at 1440p! And as someone who owns only a 4K and 1440p monitor I don't really care about the 1080p results other than they will tell you how the CPU performs and how big the gap is to older generation or the competitor. IMHO the tech channels should test also with 1440p DLSS Quality and 4K DLSS Performance along with native 1080p cause that way it renders only 960p to 1440p or 1080p to 4K which is more CPU bound, and in my personal testing and experience 1440p DLSS Q has actually the same performance as native 1080p give or take and often times 1440p dlss q is actually slightly faster than native 1080p in games.

However in future games and with me powerful GPUs, my CPU will much slower than 9800x3d. Why people like you never understand that if you have 150fps in 1080p and you will have almost 150fps in 4k. @@blondegirl7240 Your example works when you are comparing a CPU with your own CPU. That way, you have your own data to compare with to decide if it's a worthy upgrade or not. But when you are deciding between multiple CPUs, the resolution also matters. For example, if I want to decide between the 9700x and 9800x3d, a lower resolution will give me an idea regarding the actual difference between the performance of both CPUs. At higher resolutions, say 1440p, one might become CPU bottlenecked while the other doesn't. The performance gap will be closer than the lower resolution result. But how much closer? That’s what people want to know. Also, when comparing high-end CPUs, high-end GPUs make sense. But when you are comparing middle class CPUs, people mostly pair them with mid-end GPUs like the 4070 or 7800xt. Their GPUs become bottlenecks much earlier. If they lack understanding and only rely on the review data, they might think upgrading CPUs will give them similar performance uplift. They upgrade their CPUs and get the exact same performance they had earlier. That's why real-world data is also necessary, in my opinion, to assess different scenarios. This should be a part of the reviews. I understand the amount of work it takes, and I greatly appreciate reviewers' efforts to present us the data. It won't be possible for them to put in the day-one reviews, but eventually, they should include this data as well. Not because it's the right method of testing performance, but rather to give non-techy people a better understanding so they don't waste their hard-earned money for no to barely any performance gain.

Just bought a 9800X3D, upgrading from an i7-6700K + GTX 1070 to the 9800X3D + 7900XT - going team red for the first time in a very long time. The last few generations Intel and NVIDIA did not feel very appealing to me. It is great to see such serious completion again resulting in apparently great products like the X3D CPUs. Going form 1080p to 1440p too. Christmas will come early for me this year for sure.

Finally - 1440p and 4K benchmarks for CPU. Thank you! this is what so many people want to see but we rarely could. People generally upgrade to play on 1440p and 4K - those 1080p gains are useless. Seeing the avg gain is 7% and 3.7% is valuable info.

6:28 Thank you! Yes, 1080p shows the potential of the CPU but people want to see what average FPS they can expect in 1440p and 4K since a lot of people are upgrading these days, seeing over 200 FPS at 1080p doesn't help people know if it's worth upgrading for higher resolutions.

But a lot of people also game at 1440p and 4k where they use DLSS upscaling to the point where you're rendering internally at like 1080p in DLSS performance, and can still then benefit then from a faster CPU. A faster CPU will also help in framerate stability since a lot of games have hiccups where it will go in and out of being GPU bottlenecked or not based on what is happening. Like you might be playing some open world game where when you go into a city it's suddenly way more CPU intensive and that's where these things can shine in keeping the experience more consistent.

The 9800X3D also make a big difference in some CPU heavy games at 4k. like cyberpunk for example my previous 12600k, 13700k and my daughters 14600k was all behind between 20-60FPS. Even 1%lows was higher than all intel which is truly nuts!

It's really nice to see multiple resolutions tested and not just 1080p. It gives us a better idea of how it would perform in a real situation. Thank you for this! A video I would love to see, is a comparison between the 9800X3D, 7800X3D, 9700X and 7700X but paired with more of a "midrange" GPU like a 4070. This should show if it is worth it to go for an X3D CPU or not when you don't have a 4090, because most of us are probably using a GPU in the 4060 - 4070 range. Also, currently a 7700X is only €290, a 9700X is €335, while a 7800X3D is €499 and a 9800X3D is unavailable, but is probably around €600.

I think it's always worth it to go with the superior CPU and a mid range GPU because GPU's are almost always upgradeable and have been for the past 15+ years or so, not like when I was a kid and I had to buy a new motherboard because my AGP slot got replaced by the PCI Express slot. More importantly, you can crank down all kinds of GPU related graphics settings as time goes on, replace TAA or MSAA with SMAA or a reshade version of SMAA, and easily swap out the part itself without disturbing the rest of your PC. CPU's on the other hand, change socket type almost every 2 years or so requiring motherboard replacement to upgrade which in turn likely requires a memory upgrade along with it and to replace a CPU is both a more delicate, complex and stressful process with fitting the cooler and applying the paste, and some of those damn cpu coolers were a bitch to get seated right

@@KvltKommando I completely agree, but there is still a difference between a budget CPU or a midrange CPU like the Ryzen 9700X or 7900X and an X3D CPU. A few months ago, the 7800X3D was available for €340. I would have chosen that CPU without a question, but I'm not gonna pay €160 more for the exact same a few months later. And €600 for the 9800X3D is way over the limit that I want to spend on a CPU. So I just would like to know if it is worth the risk to wait for the prices to drop again, or to just go for the 9700X.

No it's not, she basically wasted 2 more tests per cpu per game just to show the same exact % diff for 1440p and 4k on most games unless there's a GPU bottlenecked. You should just look at the 1080p results, expect that exact fps on ALL resolutions if there was no GPU bottleneck. If there was a gpu right now that could keep up with current gen cpus, then you should see the same if not more fps on higher resolutions.

And the majority of us playing on 4K are using 4090, so this test must be included, to see how much of a difference there is between both CPUs. I care to see if the new CPU is worth upgrading to for use at 1440p/4k, if there isn't a substantial gain then I will keep my current CPU and $700 until a CPU actually shows performance gain at realistic resolutions is available. I don't care for CPU tests at 1080p just to show it's advantages at 1080p cause that's not the resolution people buying a $700 CPU play at. Make it make sense.

@@Dreadpirateflappy The 7950X3D is better than the 7800X3D, as the cache CCDX clocks higher. CPUs are better binned. Only issue in early times was that games were hopping between the CCDs disrupting the performance. You could lock the games to the cores/threads or use other applications like process lasso to fix that. Been hosting servers for games and use process lasso to dedicate systems to each CCD.

Thanks for this great video which includes tests with 1080p, 1444p and 4K (and not only 1080p)😊 I’m looking for a new PC for gaming and video editing. Will wait to see if Intel can improve the performance of the 285K but I think I will have to consider this new AMD processor If Intel finally delivers some patches, hope you will perform new tests 😉

Thank you. I was so off-put by Hardware Unboxed saying that 4K data was not useful. Since I game at 4K, the lower resolution doesn’t matter to me. It’s great to hear: oh there’s a big difference at 1080P, but if I’m still GPU bound and there is minimal improvement at my resolution, I appreciate seeing that it is not worth upgrading from the 7800X3D at this time.

@bryanwhite433 HUB did not say anything wrong. 4K is in most games GPU bound. Hence the results are entirely dependant on what GPU is used for the test. CPU review is not an upgrade guide tailored specifically for you and it cant be because everyone has their own GPU/resolution/framerate/settings combo they play at and this will vary on a game by game basis too.

Yea they're testing a CPU's ability to push frames. They're using a 4090, do you have a 4090 because 4K is basically a GPU test at this point. Do you not understand the process of testing a CPU?

Yes! I game at 4K and own a 7800X3D. The difference is so little it's not worth it to upgrade to 9800X3D.

@@muratveli The difference will grow wit every GPU that is faster. As long as you keep the same GPU the difference stays the same. As your upgrade your GPU the CPU will reach it's limits and start bottlenecking the GPU. Steve showed this perfectly when he retested 3950X, 5800X and 5800X3D at 1080p and 4K with 3090 Ti. At 4K all three were the same framerate. Then he restested with 4090 and suddenly 5800X3D was nearly 50% faster.

The power draw while gaming and idel power were indeed really important data. You are the only reviewer that adds. That and ahows how intel is actually still doing good. Hopefully you add more power draw data in real word performance and not benchmarks like other bad reviewers do. Also intel got the possibility of tweaking the cpu clocks and power draw as you wish. You can achieve an amazing performance with just 70w that spanks AMD in productivity and gives you very comparable gaming performance in 1440p and 4k. With how the new x3d chips are priced. I don't see why anyone can sacrifice that money with losing so much performance in productivity. 8 cores are way too low.

7:08 - 11% faster in 1080p, 7% faster in 1440p, 4% faster in 4K than the 7800x3d but... 9:40 - 50% more power usage than the 7800x3d - oof! Sorry, but this is not a king by any means. Huge power usage increases for diminishing returns. But you did a great job with this video!

It depends a bit on the game, but the 7800X3D is still the efficiency king for sure.

The 9800x3D draws more power, hence the higher performance, but it is also much cooler than the 7800x3D because of the new design. So it's actually more efficient. If you undervolt it to draw the same power, it is still way cooler than the 7800x3D while still being more powerful.

Appreciate the benchmarks. If I may make a suggestion as no Tech KZbin Reviewer ever does is show the System Idle Temps for each platform comparisons. I have exp w/ both AMD & Intel w/ several system builds and while some are concerned w/ power draw some of us are concerned w/ heat output. AMD from my experience generally runs 50-55C idle where as Intel runs 30-35 idle. The heat index build up in your environment is or should I say can be an issue if you live in a warmer climate region. Tbh I'm more concerned about heat output than power usage.

Hey, thanks! What you want to look at though is power, temperatures themselves really don't mean much. A bad cooler might run a 100W CPU at 90 degrees, and a great cooler could run a 200W CPU at 80 degrees, but the 200W system is what is going to heat your room more. The cooler on the 200W CPU is just better at moving all that heat into your room :) So if you're concerned with heat around your system, power is the main thing that really matters. Using the numbers in my video, in idle, the AMD rig would be pushing ~20W more into your room than the Intel one, the same as a couple of LED lamps. Hope that helps?

The 7 265K has an idle power consumption of 43W, while the 9800X3D uses 65W at idle. I think for someone who keeps their PC on all day, would the 7 265K be the better choice ?

Just gone from a i9 9900k to the 9800x3d paired with my 3080 ti (likely will upgrade to 5080 ti/super when it comes out) and I'm seeing 30-50fps more in games at 1440p. Assume ddr5 is also contributing to the boost but my am I one happy gamer right now 😊😊😊😊 especially as I got it at RRP and not an inflated/scalped price!
