COMMENT 2024: Please note that everything I say in this video is still relevant today. You need to learn the same concepts and the same technologies if you want to become a DevOps engineer. The technologies like Git, Docker, Kubernetes or cloud platform like AWS are still the most used ones. Terraform is still most used IaC tool, Python is still the most demanded programming language for DevOps. And here I'm who is the CTO of our small startup, where I'm doing 80 % of the programming (HPC C++ biological simulation), I also had to set up the CD and now I'm spinning up the Kubernetes Cluster for our simulations. I didn't know much about the CI and Kubernetes 1.5 months ago but here there are these Nana videos, so now it's almost working.

@bencekeomley-horvath385
@bencekeomley-horvath385 4 жыл бұрын
@@RatjaR501 Depends on what your goal with HPC. On CPU level try with OpenMP (or now with the standard parallel library in C++20, but I don't have experience with it). If NVIDIA GPU then CUDA, if multi computing node then OpenMPI. I personally parallelise only on CPU level with OpenMP, and for most cases, I have to run my application multiple times in an experiment so Kubernetes does the multi-node part (running multiple separate applications on different nodes)

I really love how you broke down the workflow of DevOps with the tools used in a very simplistic manner. I must say you really know how to get the message across, something alot of other KZbinrs lack. As a Data Scientist you really made me understand the DevOps realm in a single video. I spent so much time before trying to grasp this concept, but others couldn't really make it hit home like you did. Keep it up!

I have done the typical DevOps work for 18 years now, long before the 'DevOps' term was invented - and I still find this job particularly difficult. AWS, K8s, Terraform, Ansible have become so complex that it's impossible to keep up to date. Even now, as I am part of a highly skilled team of engineers, I can tell you that none of us is a master in this field.
@TechWorldwithNana
@TechWorldwithNana 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Thanks for sharing your experience. 100% agree with you. I think DevOps is actually becoming more and more challenging over time, as applications get complex and new tools get added. I myself started as a software developer in the IT world and even though I love DevOps much more, I definitely think it's more difficult and challenging :)

As if "keeping it up to date" is some sort of end goal. "Keeping it up to date" is a process. So tell me about your process, and tell me about how you measure your performance with respect to that process. I have also been doing "devops" for 18 odd years ,and updates are not things you must do, but they are things you must think about, rationalize and make a decision on. For any given update I should be able to say: importantnot important, urgent no urgent, skipped for reason X , risk is Y , benefit is Z. There are of course unknown unknowns, but being able to talk about that should be the product of 18 years of experience.

@@TechWorldwithNana There is a danger to think a tool will fix a problem without thinking about what problem it might introduce. The vendors are bias, keep that in mind. That said some tools are hella awesome ( I'm looking at you terraform ) . But I manage my expectations with respect to Terraform. Terraform has a job, I dodn't expect it to fix something that's it's not designed for address. For example some think that terraform will somehow relieve them of the need to know the things they deploy into. Like I don't need to be an AWS expert to run a production environment in AWS if I use terraform right? wrong. You need to be an expert in AWS to be "production ready". Terraform can help you with some of the tedious pain, but for exmaple you still need to know the difference between an NACL and Security Group. Terraform can't relieve you of the requirement.

I think it's important you know how to use Linux and a programming language like Python. You also need to know about infrastructure as code (e.g. terraform) , cloud technology (AWS, azure etc) , CI/CD, containerisation like docker or Kubernetes. There will always be more things but I think these are the core. I didn't know all of these before I started work but I was learning them along the way; it really depends on what the company is looking for.

Thank you so much for this GREAT presentation. i am always confused about what DevOps is. I tried many times to learn it but I was confused it was part of application development or infrastructure. Interestingly, from 2008 to 2012 around 4 years of my career I was responsible for the continuous integration of the product. I used ms build to write the automation script, Install the shield application to create the package and the dev code from AccuRev (version control tool) repository. creating scripts for master data. once the build prepares it deploys on the local server. Now it looks much managed with devOps. I know how much pressure I had to run this process. It's a one-click job but I need to update the scripts every time before running it in order to include the master data of new modules.

It's interesting how DevOps has evolved. From nothing, to CI/CD, and then suddenly all the other things like Kubernetes and Terraform. Now security is part of it. It used to just be a culture and idea within a business. Another technology impossible to keep up with and know it all. I've been doing devops before it had a name or tools :P

It is sadly very easy to dislike it :( Any DevOps related "Roadmap" should explain what DevOps is and this video is purely an advertisement for a bootcamp that focuses purely on tools. DevOps is not about tools! It is about continuous improvement of the value stream for software companies. The start should be to read at least one theoretical book ex. The DevOps Handbook or something similar before tool training so the people have at least a chance to understand why they are doing what they are doing. There are too many who think DevOps is just a better "ops" and this video is sadly pushing that. I know the video tried to show the difference between DevOps and IT operations but the overall message is still: Learn these tools and ops is done :(

Hey Nana, I found you on google. I went through your blog post, it's really amazing. I noted down everything which need to be learned. When I first visited your blog post, I found your youtube video on the top. For a moment I thought why is this woman following me so badly. Then I convinced myself for reading the whole blog because your blog post was found on the top 2. The way you presented the content is speechless. Thank you for helping me out.

Been studying an IT and computing degree with the open university for the past 2 years and have been learning bits and bobs here and there but nearly all of it for the first two years actually relates to this job title. I would like to focus on a certain field and this may be the one. I've used Docker, Python, Linux, Cisco packet tracer etc over the last year alone but would like to dive deeper into them and work more on them.

Great overview! I have moved on from decades of software development, and into systems architecture & engineering - overviews like this help give me the 1000 ft perspective needed for architecture & high-level design. (Though as having done DevOps before it was a "word," I will likely dive in and do some tinkering just to scratch my development itch!) ^_^

I think this is the best explanation of Dev-Ops role. By clearly elaborating the role/tasks of developers & operations (sysadmin / sec admin / net admin) and mentioning that Dev-Ops simply bridge the gap by spanning (on a higher level) a large percentage of both roles
