As a small engine mechanic very familiar with these, this is one of the best videos , well explained and identified the common issues these are known to have. Well done.

My MTD starter shifted when the lower bolts shook loose. No damage was done and I got it back together. This video helped. But more than the help with the repair I will change the way I use the starter from now on. I will try to pull start first. Maybe put a space heater to work on the machine to make it easier to start. Instead of just holding down the button until it starts.

The bolts are known to loosen due to the torque of the starter motor. Just check on them every now and then. I have seen them pull a chunk out of the block either due to shaking loose, or some one over tightening them. A small dab of loctite on the threads also is not a bad idea.

Sufficient accurate curse words fully accepted - I just came in with freezing hands and commutator brushes are much more pleasant when they don't come off - so I will put extra time into keeping them put - thanx for the inside views and good advice on the compression stroke - that whacking engagement sound is bad to begin with let alone knowing it is hitting a cold compressed flywheel - I can hear the teeth breaking

Upon further review is sposed to be some sort of 2 part clutch.; The more resistence it receives the harder it pushes them together. Thanks for the vidio.Dave

No there is no clutch. This is a single bendix gear.

Nice video, anny tips for put this module back in (Brush kit) ? Im going crazy!

Is there a reason when you removed the gear that engages the ring gear that it wasn't attached to the part that engages the throw in threads on the motor output shaft. Doesn't seem to be a positive lockup between the two parts? Mine is like your's an I thought it was broke. Thanks

Could be worn out on the gear side or the flywheel

Well that’s what happened to line. It vibrated loose and I lost the bolts that hold the starter on. Any idea what size the bolts are?

Is it possible to fix the plug end? I'm missing the ground on my new to me blower mine doesn't seem to work
@gdub14 Жыл бұрын
That's exactly what mine was doing. Works intermittently. Did you figure out how to fix it. Seems like a seating back into place issue?
@reinhart5757 ай бұрын
Just better to replace with 12 volt starter 36680 with push button switch and use jump pack or just pull start. My snowblower is about 15 years old and starts on 1st or second pull everytime.

Clean it up and reassemble it the snows coming!

If it’s working intermittently. That means the motor windings should be fine. Most likely it’s the brushes seating issue.?

Mine runs but the bendix gear does not come up to engage even well lubrificated.....

You may have wired it wrong and it is spinning in reverse. I had this happen once

I used a wet lubricant like pb blaster and wound up using parts cleaner and sprayed with a silicone spray which was recommended online and it started to throw the gear out further.

I'm sitting on a brand new 5.5hp snow king engine, I'm a retired mechanic and this is for a go kart I'm building, I want to run this starter on 12v, It is a DC motor, It uses the same 4 brushes, It is built like a regular 12v starter, And these do easily burn out running on house voltage Through its internal rectifier already, Has anyone done this conversion?
@QuaabQueb3 жыл бұрын
I would not convert it. Try and find a 12V starter from an engine like a generator or lawn tractor. Some portable generators used tecumseh engines, though less common. More common are briggs. They even made lawnmowers with 12V electric battery start

Chargèro, the starter i have is identical to the one in your video except it has the "pull in" gear with the metal shroud, Yeah I'll have to find a 12v with my configuration.
