Thank you for this video. My electric start quit due to grease/ dirt and other crap that collected under that metal collar. Your video helped a lot and not a moment too soon. It's snowing right now. Thank you!

Tried the electric starter on our 2nd hand 10hp tecumseh today. I don't know where all the parts went but the bendix actually launched off the starter shaft and jammed in between the flywheel and the casing. After pull starting and nearly blowing a hole in the casing (that was exciting!!) I've come to this video to see what parts I was missing. LOL what fun!!

Hi donyboy, Thanks for this video. I have just finished replacing the starter gear. I find the black plastic cap doesn't fit very snugle and can come off very easily from the new gear. Is it dangerous to leave it on like this or should i leave it off completely?
@donyboy7313 жыл бұрын
@rockalittle00 if u think it will come off then leave it off, it's to protect the end from snow and moisture that can eventually jam up the gear

Great video I just had my starter fail this past weekend and discovered it was that the collar was destroyed. Do you happen to have a part number for that collar?
@barrybeardsley84807 жыл бұрын
Small screwdriver and pliers are easier and just as good. Caution advised as you don't want to loose the lock ring it may take a bit of a fly prying it off hold it as you pry it off and be sure of your replacement sequencing. thanks for your help .

Hi Donny. I have a starter model 105-2953. When taking it apart the pinion stop did not want to come off the shaft. The ring lock was already off the shaft. I was wondering if this is normal. Every video I watch it does not but I wanted your opinion.Also the symptoms are the motor works but the gear will not fully engage with flywheel.Any ideas? Also thank you for your videos. They are fantastic!!!

I got the cap off, my drive gear is at the outer end of the shaft. The clip is blocked, I tried an over sized socket to tap it down,no luck. What do you suggest?

Great Video Danny! Listen, what is the mystery behind a mower which starts cold and runs but if you stop it after say 20 minutes, it wont start again until its cooled down? I always wondered about this...

Wonder if that little snap ring remover tool would work on an automobile starter as well.

Can the button that you push to start your starter be replaced on the electric box, or you need to replace the whole unit. Joseph B

Hi. I have a tecumseh Bendix starter like shown. Now the fans on the flywheel indicate the that it should turn clockwise. If that's true than the bendix gesr should turn counter clockwise to engage the flywheel in the proper direction. However my gear and I believe the one in this video seem to rise on threads by turning clockwise. I'm confused because mine is spinning counter clockwise like the freewheel should need but not engaging because it appears the bendix thread wants clockwise motion to make the gear rise . Am I missing something ? Granted I know nothing about this system really. Help ! Thanks

I have a question does the collar snap into the bottom of the gear itself or does it need to be free from the gear to operate correctly?

If the collar(nut) is worn out ...would it make a severe grinding noise. It starts my engine but has a loud metallic sound. Flywheel, and gear look fine.
@timb7775 Жыл бұрын
That's crazy having to buy that special tool just to get a metal ring off.
@fromanabe86394 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and with your third hand turn the screw on the tool to open the ring. What you need is another person to grip the shaft with a pair of needle-nose pliers to keep the cup and spring out of the way.

Dony question for you. I have a 4hp Tecumseh Endine I believe the D40 with a 993290D Starter. When I plug it in and hit the start button. I hear the electric motor turn, but it is not engaging the engine. Ideas??? What parts would I be looking at? I looked at a replacement starter kit and the best price I found online was around 125 bucks. HELP HELP!

Hey donyboy, how crucial is the rubber top to the starter mechanism? I got a new starter gear and the lip which the rubber casing "snaps" onto is not as prominent as on the old gear, so it's a bit loose. I wondered if I could leave it off, or failing that... any suggestions to snug it up? I tried lining it with electric tape to build up the interior and provide more grip, but it affects the gear returning to the non-extended position. Any tips?
@donyboy738 жыл бұрын
+Bainesly it's important to prevent debris and snow from getting in and seizing it up. What I recommend is a new cap, they usually fit snug when new

Great video. Can you still get collars for a tecumseh starter motor #590556? It's pretty old. My local small engine parts store say motor is obsolete but I did find it online. If I could just ge the collar, that would be much cheaper I'm gessin.

Can you tell me if it is possible for my starter gear to be okay but what ever the gear jets into to be damaged or worn. I've had two starters apart and they both work like the one in your video after you replace the gear (real smooth collar action and no broken teeth.

that's the funny looking starter right? first remove it from your blower. Next see if the starter gear will turn on it's shaft. with the starter gear pointing to ur left see if you can turn the gear Counter Clockwise. lubricate the shaft with liquid wrench or WD-40. Work it until it moves freely and returns freely. you will also see a small spring on the shaft, this is to return it. the gears often get jammed and i think this is your problem.
@0001buster10 жыл бұрын
I suspect a broken spring jamming it, still stuck???

You have to wonder just how stupid someone would have to be to make something like that. ALL those GREAT ideas Tecumseh came up with to try to stop their loyal customers from working on their own equipment got them where they are today...gone. Briggs and Stratton are now FEAVERISHLY working to get to the same place....gone.
