If you read "The Devil's Defender," his lawyer from earlier truly believes Ted Bundy had a death wish. First, before he escaped jail he asked his attorney which states would be most likely to follow through on the death penalty, and one of the states his attorney listed was Florida, and obviously after he escaped he deliberately went to Florida. Also, apparently in spite of the horror of what Bundy did, his lawyer had negotiated life rather than a death sentence in every single state where he committed his crimes as long as he just pled guilty, and he basically walked into the court room and threw that deal out.

Those newspaper images were indistinguishable from what the trial disclosed. Bundy could have kept those from appearing in trial by pleading guilty in return for a life sentence. It would have been easy to believe that Bundy wasn't "that bad" had those images not appeared. It is telling that the last thing that he did before sentencing was to pore over the newspaper coverage that showed him as the Mr. Hyde character in contrast to the persona that he tried to present. I do not know how valid split personalities are, but they are not a valid defense. The newspaper accounts showed an animalistic killer that Bundy would have been unable to excuse if it were not he. But it was he, something that he likely could not accept until he could be placed at the scene of the Chi Omega murders.

I respectfully disagree. Excessively harsh sentencing may give society some sense of catharsis. However in the majority of legal cases, being overly punitive fails to have the deterrent effect that the government pretends it does. Ted Bundy was a monster deserving of a harsh sentence. But the Ted Bundys of the world represent a mere fraction of individuals that find themselves entangled in the legal system. The mentality that every criminal should have the book thrown at them is equal parts ineffective and vindictive.

My uncle my dad's brother was a juror in this trial! Crazy to think he was a part of a trial of one of the most known serial killers in history. He was initially not chosen and stayed an alternate. A few jurors most women reported they where in fear of being in danger and thought bundy could escape or have someone harm them. So he was picked to replace one of the open seats. He told me that there would be nights they given menus to a nice steak house and the officers and court staff would hint that the prosecutors wanted to ensure jurors could eat good. He said it felt like as long as you seemed like you thought he was guilty you where treated better. But if you questioned anything or spoke on in a way that might make people think otherwise you'd get the cold shoulder and dirty looks. He said the bite mark evidence is what sealed it for him. He also said that he felt bundy was trying to slick talk and make the trial a show for himself to distract from the evidence. He's a private person. He's was a loner truck driver who wasn't as social as most. He said after the trial was over he had request from thousands and thousands of people requesting interviews and some offered large sums of money. But he wasn't willing to go public and put his face in the news media. Just crazy to think about. As much as he was never enthusiastic to sit and discuss it, he still would always answer my questions. But my dad has told me most of the stuff I know about it.

I have always found it disturbing listening to Judge Cowart describe Margaret Bowman's injuries at 48:47. "The defendant stealthfully bludgeoned and pummeled her with an object later described by an identifying witness as a log or club of rough texture. She was struck several times about the head, she had a ligature around her neck which was a pantyhose that strangled her, caused her death.The beating was vicious, vile and wicked and atrocious. Indeed the testimony showed that the frontal area of the brain and skull was fractured, jagged and exposed a portion of the brain. She was left in a pool of blood, her body was mutilated and lifeless..." Notice how Bundy deliberately doesn't react nor even move an inch when he hears the brutality of his crimes. He was very controlled and careful not to expose his true emotions at his sentencing, but of course, many years later and literally days before his execution in 1989, we heard even more brutal evidence of his crimes, including decapitation. In the 1986 movie The Deliberate Stranger there was an interesting statement by Dick Laresen to the detectives during a break in the trial...."he (Bundy) really feels his own pain". The definitely seems to be the case in this video....he feels bad that he was found guilty but couldn't care less about his victims or their families. I think it was to a detective that he uttered..."I'm the most cold hearted son of a bitch you'll ever meet". Bundy was a skilled and convincing liar but in the end not convincing enough.

I think that Judge Edward Cowart knew what he was doing. He wanted Bundy and the World to know that he wasn't going out of his way to be unfair and partial towards him. This was a unique and high profiled case that was historic as it was shown around the World by the Media and changed the way that court cases are presented today. He wanted to show that he did his due diligence to be fair and impartial towards Bundy to where he couldn't later try on appeal to say that he was sentenced to death by an unfair, partial, and biased Judge.

The Bible speaks of the devil traversing our planet seeking whom he may devour. It kills me how many claim to be a Christian and are as far from God as east is from west. Look what happened to Job. He did NOTHING wrong but the devil saw that he was a just man and walked with God so he ACCUSED Job to God and said....Job only obeys you because you're good to him. I HOPE you know the rest. Job was a wealthy man but he cared for the poor. I believe the devil does this with ALL of us. This is why he's been labeled, "The accuser of the brethren" because he accuses us to God 24/7. I'm not admonishing you. Evil spirit beings that are very powerful can get us to do wrong and that includes murder. I found out a long time ago that Ted used to work on a suicide hot line. He would help people in trouble. This kind of thing with Ted is all laced through the Bible. It's nothing new under the sun. Again, I'm not calling you out. It's just so very sad to see no winners in this matter.....but there will come a time when everything will be put right. God promises this.

why when he was sentenced to death twice, for two seperate murders, did they then continue to let him live on death row for around ten years? why do they do that?
@th3ra832 жыл бұрын
The standard waiting from ur announcing the Death Penalty to Execution is averagely take 10-20 years IIRC. Because there is still more investigation and more evidence being brought to closure and appeal as well by lawyer.
@greenman61412 жыл бұрын
Fortunately in death penalty cases there are always appeals to be gone through. Fortunate why? Because so many are subsequently found to be wholly innocent. People have spent 17 years on death row, and were then exonerated by DNA evidence. It is estimated that 4% of people on death row are not guilty of the crime that has put them there. Though it is interesting to thing about that as regards Bundy. DNA was just coming into use. Had he been on death row much longer, the DNA he left all over Chi Omega victims and the other victim of that night would have really put the nail in his coffin. Likewise with the case of the 12 year old child he abducted, tortured, raped, and murdered elsewhere in Florida..
@Rzo1392 жыл бұрын
He had the right and option to waive all attempts at appeals and request that they be executed quickly (a few have done that), but he was afraid to die so he tried to prevent it from happening in any way he could.
@rosegilliland2202 жыл бұрын
It nearly happened a few times where he’d be moved and placed in his death cell waiting for the time of his execution but then it would get canceled by his team. It got to a point where it became a joke that he might outsmart old sparky. He got cocky at times about it. And at the time the green river killer was taking all the spotlight and was front page news while Bundy not so much. Just a reminder his execution was coming up, then update he avoided it again.
@nicoletamez5182 жыл бұрын
Because you have to appeal each sentence. If he just had one death sentence and got it appealed, he would not have to face the sentence. If he has 10, he has to appeal through 10. Which is less than half of the girls he murdered. The more death sentences you face, the less likely you are to avoid the penalty
