"Quiet down to this one, it's a sad one this. I went to the football the other day and I was walking down the road and this police man come up beside me he said "Uh, tell us a joke Ted.""

Until a couple of weeks ago I couldn't remember that it was Ted Chippington who did this. I remembered the delivery and accent but couldn't remember his name. I had thought it was Frank Sidebottom for ages but couldn't find this stuff amongst his songs and performances. This performance came up after listening to some other Fruiter than thou's uploads and I was so thrilled to become reacquainted with Ted's work. I've found other uploaded stuff since and it's still so funny and clever and wonderfully silly. What joyous nonsense!

👍 Despite living in Torquay now he still has a Brummie accent but at this stage you can here his Potteries accent quite a lot 😂

It sounds like Ted wandered onto a stage and interrupted peoples night on the town while interjecting with a complaint 😂 Egregiously funny

I can't believe how fresh and funny this still is coming towards the end of 2020. He's still my hero... 20:59: "What did he say, Ted Chippington?" This was a fun moment.

I love how deliberately perverse he is at that point - the one joke in his set the audience knows and expects, and rather than milk it, he throws it away purely to annoy them.

I was an undergrad at Manchester at this time, and I first saw Ted at the PSV in '84, and within a couple of years he'd gathered something of a dedicated following that could almost recite the whole set. A kind of cheap, naff version of the lot that were doing the Rocky Horror Picture Show routines around the same time.
