Religion indeed played a large role in his life, particularly the later years. He was a daily communicant in those last years and during his final illness exchanged letters with the Pope. He had much to atone for and he made his best effort at doing so.

As I saw it not only was his own childhood important. His role as a father figure to Jack's; Bobby's and even Pat (Lawford)'s children as well as his own three (not forgetting his two step-children). So yes its clear that family was very significant to him.

what a terrible thing to say, back in those days the medical community thought that lobotomy would help control mental illness and provide a better quality of life. If, as a family, they can purge themselves of the existential stain that is RFK Jr., a DINO conspiratorista and a total embarrassment to his or any family, they'll come out all right. If it were as simple as just "sobering up," then we could admonish him for his incapacity. However, phone records from the hotel room where he was staying that night indicated that he made 17 phone calls to friends, family members and associates BEFORE he called to report the accident at all. They had already discovered the car in the water by the time he called the authorities. He was trying to find a way out of being accountable.

I'm not sure how much truth there is in that statement. I really don't believe he had the ambition to be President. In an interview he did in 1980 he literally fumbled around to find one plausible answer as to why he wanted to be President. And nobody should be President who doesn't truly covet the position. After seeing both his brothers literally die for the office I can almost understand why in Ted's defense.
