A true pioneer. My favourite moment was when he comes to the part about what makes websites popular and the screen shows, "Dance like an idiot and don't sell anything", and immediately my mind strayed to TikTok. Ze Frank didn't know how accurate that would be... or did he?

ZeFrank is a shining example of a playful and in the most complimentary sense "childish" intelligence. As children, we are all possessed of these same playful, inquiring, and creative instincts. In the vast majority of people as we grow into "maturity" (which I use here in its most derogatory sense) this fearless intellectual inquisitiveness is gradually relinquished in favour of socially accepted "certainties" which is why the vast majority of adults suck so bad.

The only difference being Jim has not been funny since around the period In Living Color was on, and Frank is still as funny as ever. Once comedians start getting into hardcore political activism you know their wellspring of creativity is dry. Not just my opinion -- have heard tons of comedians who are still funny saying the same thing. Jim was brilliant but went thru a lot of mental illness and his bits became stale.

A very long time ago, I watched this video and became absolutely amazed with this channel TEDtalksDirector. I used to watch BreakingNYC, RWJ's vlog channel, where I met Meekakitty. I subscribed to her channel as well. A few years later, Meekakitty put up a link for Ze Frank's channel and I became a huge fan. Having long forgotten about this man, as I watched his videos I was led to this TED talk. I thought, "I can't believe he was on TED!" It's interesting how life experiences come full circle.

Social media sure killed off that collaborative thing Ze brought up near the end. It survives only spontaneously. Mostly, we react, we buy, or push the [ your stimulus here ] button. It's better for business, like most things that mass us without bonding us.

Classic. I'm a huge fan of his "True Facts". After watching this clip, I'm reminded of a young Steve Martin.

I first watched this a few years back, and I thought of Ze as a Jim Carrey impersonator who thought the internet was just too funny. He was certainly entertaining, but did a poor job selling the deeper meaning of what are, on the surface, tiny interactive baubles. Fast forward to now, having seen his vlog projects, having witnessed the community he formed, and suddenly I take every crazy wide-eyed optimist a little more seriously.

it wasn't really a joke. I'm talking about the opening of his talk. it was just kind of a generally funny story that helped him segue into the body of his presentation.

Could I point the current discussion to Ze Frank's talk at VidCon. He showcases a lot of the stuff he did here, but has the time to showcase why it's important, and why people care, and what value we can take from it. It's effing brilliant. Just search "Ze Frank Vidcon".
