After the fall of Rome, Europe entered its dark age. I think Africa in a similar manner has been in a intellectual dark age for the last several centuries. Colonialism took advantage of and has perpetuated the African Dark age far longer than it may have naturally existed otherwise. However I think that finally, after far too long, Africa is leaving its Dark Age behind. In the last 50 years alone the continent has been rebuilding and rediscovering its history, culture, and intellectual achievements. In the next 50 to 100 years, Africa will only continue to rise from the ashes of its Dark Age, to once again take its rightful place on the world stage as a powerhouse of trade, culture, and intellectualism.

As one who has studied history for many years, I couldn't agree with you more! That is how the cycle goes. When a civilization is conquered, it always goes through a long period of a "dark age" so to speak, then after time it always rises again. Always! Every civilization in the world goes through this process on different levels of the spectrum.

This is a very passionate talk. I like how clear he's speaking and he's making a vaild point of reclaiming the continent lands of Africa. On the other hand, When they do reclaim their history, they also tell the bad parts of Africa. What happened to the people, what they did to each other. It's important to acknowledge every part of history that belongs to city/country/continent, because if you don't, you just wind up with propaganda.

Excellent speech Dr. Gus Casely-Hayford! You have so much passion and wise conviction for your people and the greatness that lies within African history! Truly Africa was a great continent and once was the greatest in the world! Times turn all things. Someday the entire world will know about your people. As a white European I am unashamed to say that those who deny Africa was ever great are deeply insecure and hateful. I truly respect you Sir and would shake your hand if I could.

This video does not have to be relevant to everyone but allow me to point out that talks like these are important for people in Africa. Often the history of a country is only told from the time that it was colonised and onwards, as though nothing was happening in Africa before then. I think it is important to shift the narrative from merely being colonised to rather looking at our rich history and civilisation that we have. The idea of Africans focusing on Africa shouldn't be such a radical idea.

The trend in TED talks is that black people and women who talk about being black, or a woman, tend to get more downvotes than scientifically oriented talks. So is that because their talks are bad, or because blacks and women are not appreciated on this channel?
@Chidds
@Chidds 7 жыл бұрын
I am sure if a talk was posted on TED promoting Christianity or Islam that this would be heavily downvoted too. I think its less about a speaker's characteristics but more about ideological content. Anyway, it appears that the prediction made was wrong. Perhaps those who did downvote the talk did so because they feel no connection to it, maybe because they are subbed to TED for the tech, engineering and design, not for the social/cultural content.

philtripe I know what it is, I'm from eastern Europe, from not so rich country. Propaganda can be not only political. Ted offers another type of brainwashing switching from science to stupid popular media where colorful characters and their local stories are hiding reality - no bad guys, everything OK, even in most poor, theocratic and totalitarian regions. They are trying to distract from roots of the problems and cover topic superficially, such approach can easily be digested by mediocre guy. Look at the video of last year, you would notice that most "lectures" given by not eminent people but people with just colorful look. If u compare this channel to others it would be closer to fox news then to "big thing" or "vsauce" for example.
