This is my problem with Gates' plan: It doesn't propose any fundamental shift in the way we relate to the planet. We can keep driving cars they just need to be electric. We can still eat burgers they just need to be 'impossible" burgers. We can still run our air conditioners they just need to be solar powered. We can still build with concrete it just needs to be "green" concrete. We can still cut down forests they just need to be "sustainably" managed. We can still fly airplanes they just need to use bio-fuels. Basically: we can still live the way we live today and consume what we consume... we just make those products "green". Gates' proposals are much easier to accept than more "radical" changes. But sooner or later we will be forced to make "radical" changes to the way we live. Gates' ideas are not the way to avoid climate disaster. They are a clever marketing strategy aimed at consumers who are awakening to the unfolding climate disaster.

I fear that Geo Engineering as a solution for climate change is a very controversial topic! We could make the planet far more reactive in order to limit the heating from the sun. But this is going to have negative impacts on some other regions. For example, if we just spend a lot of energy producing more clouds by evaporating sea water, this can also result in rain and flooding on some regions. I like the option of flooding the Qattara Depression in Egypt for example, but this is not without risk and long term consequences.

There's a huge problem with this plan and I submit that it's exemplified by the fact there exists a "tech" industry which excludes the industrial economy. It's cheap to disrupt the software and entertainment industries. Places like Silicon Valley just hoover up all the best engineers. No one graduates with an engineering degree dreaming about the chance to work in cement production. Innovation is like a tree that's not true-from-seed. It takes almost 100,000 apple trees to get one that produces fruit that tastes good. If the smartest engineers don't start pouring into these legacy, old-timey, stodgy, bureaucratic industries then climate change innovation will just be crab apples no matter how much money gets thrown at it.
@pioneer77777773 жыл бұрын
Once there are incentives and the money is flowing consistently into reducing emissions in these industries, the talent will go there. Following the money is the number one rule for bright minds with big student loans to pay off.
