Chute! An emergency landing procedure. Positive side, good to know & check the operation & mechanics of this once in a while. Main thing, our aircrew & aircraft were safe, all went well. I remember the collection of the chute, well done! Nothing like a good tidy up. Could reuse it for a tent!? Excellent shots & narrative Ted. Thnx all.

I don't get what using the chute has to do with fuel minimums ?? maybe it was a planning training sortie to release the chute , and the AC just happened to come back on minimums ?

Not very often a chute deployment is filmed this closeup. Well done Ted! With the Embraer on the runway, the jet could have flown for the diversion. Maybe across the fields to Cranwell. They would have been given plenty of notice of this Emergency and I can't understand how the Embraer was allowed onto the runway. Perhaps I didn't see the whole picture. Good work Ted,Nikos.
@TedConingsby

Oii Oii Gazza The Embraer landed safely but was ordered to taxi back via the East side but then realised that the Embraer couldn’t go over the arresting cable. This was happening while the Typhoon was on final. Quick reactions was to turn the Embraer back 180 to taxi down the runway but at the same time the Typhoon made a last second go around thank goodness. I know it was burning fuel doing circuits and called out ‘minimum fuel’. Never seen the chute deployed this close before yet alone see it been retrieved and packed up.

Great video, ATC could have got the Arrestor crew from GEF to lower the RHAG for the Embraer and then raise for the Typhoon. The 'Squipers' will have fun repacking that chute once they examine for damage. If it was a serious incident for the Typhoon both RHAG's could have been raised for approach and overrun, i've lowered a fair few when ar Leuchars for private jets coming in for the golf. Samuel l jackson is a lovely chap and loves his golf 😁

Oiii oiii David 🤙🏼 Thanks very much. Typhoon was burning fuel and as my memory serves me some kind of dial/HUD issue. The Embraer just couldn’t go over the RHAG so luckily the quick decision for the go around was made.

Nice to see the pilots' and tower's quick thinking to ensure safety! What was the reason for the Typhoon deploying the chute on landing?
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Жыл бұрын
Tower and pilots worked exceedingly good to prevent an incident. I can’t remember the issue as there were two emergencies that day, one had issues with the HUD but many of the issues were rectified whilst airborne but RTB for safety

So what would happen if they could have used the emergency hook would they block the runway? In an exercise in Norway it happened that they blocked the runway but I don't know what type of emergency it was.
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Жыл бұрын
If they used the cable (RHAG) then yes, it would cause a delay on the runway for any departures or arriving aircraft. If I remember the aircraft had HUD issues or some display issues so was a safe option to RTB.

I take it the GSES arrestor team were not on task to disconnect the Rhag cable and then re-connect, as is the normal procedure when an aircraft has a too small a wheel base lands.
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Жыл бұрын
It was a freak occurrence due to the fact the emergency aircraft allowed the Embraer to land first but of course when asked to taxi all the way to the end of the round and use the taxiway to the south, realised last minute about the cable. But usually the arrestor team would be on the case All ended well

Interesting... Notice how during this go-around the pilot did select gear up, I suppose to save fuel through less drag. Normally they keep the gear down during low approaches and touch & go's. It seems a quite dramatic situation that could have ended in disaster, but perhaps there were good reasons to let the Embraer land first despite there being an emergency. Nice video that raises questions, which probably have simple answers :)
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Жыл бұрын
Oiii piii Arjen 🤙🏼 Yes, Typhoon was burning fuel while all this was going on and the Typhoon pilot allowed the Embraer to land first in order for the Typhoon to do one last circuit.. however, as the Embraer landed, it couldn’t go over the arresting cable while the Typhoon was on final approach to land. Luckily the Typhoon/Tower quick to react and made a go around. Really skills there. The Embraer couldn’t go any further other than to spin around 180 and go down the runway.

@@TedConingsby Thanks, I initially thought the fuel amount was the reason for the emergency, even though 'chute deployment might suggest hydraulics issues. I'm not sure what a "minimum fuel" call exactly means, but it could well be the minimal safe amount that still allows to divert to another field if necessary.
@TedConingsby

@@arjenav5968 Pilot was burning fuel before he got to Coningsby and did a couple more circuits until minimum fuel for safety I guess.

Some aircraft are cleared to trample arrestor cables, some are not. It looks as though the cable was "rigged" which may explain why the Embraer could not trample it. Being Bingo on fuel is not that unusual and the use of the braking chute is not an emergency procedure. On a runway of the length of Conningsby, especially if Bingo on fuel the chute is not needed at all. As the bard said, "Much ado about nothing"

What’s an arrest cable pls ?!
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Жыл бұрын
Ok so the Arrestor cable is called a Rotary Hydraulic Arrestor Gear (RHAG). It can be called Arrestor Cable. In simple terms for its purpose, it is to catch aircraft that have a rod (with a hook) to help decelerate or even bring the aircraft to a halt. Aircraft carriers use them too but for airfields can assist in emergency aircraft.

Its cable that runs across the runway suppoted of the ground by rubber grommets. The aircraft drops its hook like on an aircraft carrier to engage the cable and slow the aircraft down.

The parachute deployment is done at routine intervals as part of the service maintenance of the parachute. There is nothing unusual about this. Also the pilot's have to be familiar with the chute landings on a regular basis. All very normal.
@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby Жыл бұрын
This is true, however, the Embraer had a little situation and couldn’t go over the RHAG, while this was actually a gen emergency landing procedure.

Training? The first time you deploy a ‘chute probably shouldn’t be when you have to! Looking at videos of the Lightning jet from the 80’s it seems normal practice to use the ‘chute
