I’ve holidayed several times next to RAF Valley and thought that the training Hawks were loud, but the last time I was there, three Typhoons visited, and their take-off was ear-splitting, and awesome! That take-off was the highlight of my holiday, but I feel sorry for anyone living near RAF Coningsby.

We holidayed at Tattershall in 2022. Fantastic view of RAF Coningsby from the top of Tattershall Castle. As I teenager I lived in Boston and well remember the Phantoms banking low near my house on their way up to the Wainfleet bombing range. Marvelous.

29 Squadron use the Roman style of XXX for their number. Legend has it that in the dark mists of time some erk was told to go and paint the squadron number on an aircraft as 'XX one X' as in XXIX for 29, however, his interpretation was a little different and he just put 'XX and X' and they have stayed like that ever since.

@@dabrab All of the 22 Typhoons that were due to display in the King’s coronation flypast came from Coningsby; Coningsby is also the larger of the two typhoon bases. I don’t doubt for a second though that there were perhaps a handful of typhoons at Lossiemouth on standby just in case but more likely there would have been spares at Coningsby as well.

@@nickhawthorne2602 you know how much these things cost don't you? Plus how capable they are, plus the F35's that are gradually increasing in numbers, we'll have 48 by 2025, we don't need huge quantities of aircraft. @@robinstreets1792 Honestly I wish to take nothing away from the gear (which is great) and the people (who work harder than ever). We'd have expected the military to contract after 1991, but honestly, we've gone from more than 800 combat aircraft to less than a quarter of that. It's all good, and I'd have thought it was fine, until recently. This is a cruel simplification for the sake of a KZbin comment, but just for instance, the last time Russia decided to park a naval vessel off northeast England, it took the Royal Navy a week to get a destroyer up there to say hello. The forces have been cut to ribbons and then some. Value for money is another issue but you probably get my concerns.

I’m a old fells and was working on F4 Phantoms. If the Phantom was clean wing (no external fuel tanks ) from take off with both engines in max Afterburner it would use up 13000 lb of fuel in about 12 to 15 minutes. That fuel ( kerosene) would last you two years in your central heating boiler. If the F4 had external fuel tanks ( 2x Sgt Fletchers and a centreline tank) and flew economy that is AB s for take off only then flight endurance about 2 hours. Hope you found this interesting.
