To get a home warranty company to replace a unit you have to get the service provider to play ball. I had one that came with my house purchase, and it paid for a new water heater, a couple minor HVAC repairs, a new heat exchanger for one unit, and they were going to replace the other one. Really all it needed was a heat exchanger as well, but the contractor submitted for a replacement on account of age. The warranty company agreed, but the code updates were going to be super expensive, (on top of the 3000 bucks I'd have to pay on top of the company's money) so they cut me a check for $3100 and I replaced the heat exchanger and burners myself. I've canceled the home warranty and now just put away the cost of the monthly membership into savings for unit replacement when a unit ultimately goes out.

Usually insurance of any type will not pay for the cause of a loss but will accept the secondary damage caused by the initial cause. Example, a water heater leaks one night, homeowners wake up one morning and there's wet everything surrounding the water heater. Home insurance will not pay for the water heater but will pay to replace/repair the water damaged items.

I’ve repaired many a leaks in r22. It always depends on a lot of factors. One being what the customer wants to do of course. Obviously if it’s to hard to do I don’t. But if it’s something I feel confident I can do and it will hold I repair them. I realize when you pull up to a house like you were at chances are they can afford it, but a lot of people can’t and those are the ones I try to help the most.

Yeah, sadly the home warranty crap is more of a pain than it is worth a lot of times. They cover the water lines "after" they enter the home not before. Have a leak between the house and the curb, you gotta pay it. Sure they cover appliances and stuff but by the time you figure the cost of a replacement vs paying a fee and a deductible among other things you would have been better off sticking the cash in a mason jar in the back yard. Not to mention that most of the time the warranty repairs are often contracted to the lowest bidder who honestly is going to most often rush the work since they get paid crappy. Was at a friends place in Phoenix and replaced the water line from the curb for about 300 by the time they paid me a few dollars for doing it while they were gone. The cost to replace the line was quoted at 3000 for the pro and 700 for the handyman to fix after tearing up the concrete. Was easier to abandon the old line and run new outside of the sidewalk than to tear up the concrete and then patch it back. When they got home after being gone for a couple weeks the humidity was unusually high and with the suitcases and such coming in the condensate pan overflowed because of cyanobacteria in the drain line. I sucked the line clear with a shop vac and then poured some bleach down the line from the inside and told them they needed to do something similar once a month or so to keep the line clear. Crawling in the return was ohh so much fun but it kept them from needing to have the home warranty company come in and tell them they didn't do water related repairs either... Simpler to get the water cleaned up and put a little bit of drywall compound on it and then paint it anyway.

I went down to the office to get payment and the owner had a stack of money in front of him that he was counting. The guy literally had thousands of dollars sitting in front of me and refused to pay. I went back up onto the roof and cracked the flare nut that I had found leaking earlier so that the refrigerant would leak out slowly again (This was before recovery units were available). The owner called me back about a week later and told me that I had not fixed his walk-in. I told him that there was no warranty on unpaid service calls and hung up on him.

After two days, all the freon leaked back out. I did another callback free of charge, if not fixed in 30 days. Guess what? the lineset connected to the low/high copper pipe had a leak. In my opinion it is not worth fixing something that has no warranty and frankly no future. R22 products are obsolete, the manufacturing of them has been outlawed since 2010, now the manufacturing of the refrigerant itself is outlawed as of the beginning of 2020. Therefore the only repair for example to replace coil‘s, requires buying a new style coil and converting it back for compatible use with the obsolete refrigerant.... It would be very easy to spend half of the money for replacement doing a repair to a machine that has no warranty and is also obsolete and outdated. Therefore that is why I say in my opinion when I repair is not economically sound, it is just not worth doing.

For the air conditioning applications the best choice available in the market is R-410A and for refrigeration applications the best choices are R-404A and R-507. For any particular refrigeration and air conditioning application, the EPA maintains the list of the refrigerants that can be used as the alternatives for R22. EPA has made it clear that the refrigerants being used as the alternatives for R22 cannot be generally used directly in the existing equipment as “drop-in” replacement without making the modifications in the system.

Topping off is illegal in all developed countries aside from the us. Going from 3.5 to 5 tons, would probably have to re-do the ducts and the not keeping up may be caused by not delivering full capacity to the space, between airflow issues and heat gain into ducts. To say a unit isn't worth repairing (even if the problem is electrical) just 'cause it uses r22 is nuts. I would be more concerned about efficiency, overall condition and cost of repair vs replacement than which gas it uses.
@TedCookHVAC6 жыл бұрын
If you don't like "topping off" I suggest you don't do it..... The top floor of the house has 19 supply registers, 18 of them have 6 in ducts, 1 in master closet area has a 4 inch duct.... 2 returns, both 20x25 grilles, one has a 16 inch duct, the other has a 14 inch duct.... also 1 return in master bedroom with a 14x20 grille and a 10 inch duct.... the gas furnace is a 5 ton drive and the coil is a 4 ton, the outside unit is 3.5.. the house has all 9 ft ceilings with a 10 ft in the main living room.... total main floor footage is about 2450. It will not cool the house in extreme weather because it is undersized. In my opinion an R22 unit is not worth repairing when it has any major issue within the refrigeration system... especially leaks. Your opinion on this is apparently different than mine.... Thank You for watching !!
@Jon-hx7pe6 жыл бұрын
You must be in a brutally hot climate plus have poor construction in your area, plus high attic heat gain into the ducts to have 3.5 tons not keep up on a floor that size even with high ceilings. The electric usage must be crazy. It gets up into the low to mid 90s where I am and from the limited stuff I've seen, spaces that size cool well with like 3 tons, for normal ceiling height, probably closer to 2.5. Metal ducts in conditioned space plus having houses built for the cold works wonders. Assuming it's all flex, I imagine for a 5 ton to work with 1800-2000 cfm would need at larger ducts, a 6" flex only flows like what, 60 cfm? 70 cfm. Hope it's not common in your area to just drop in a larger unit without doing a load calculation, measuring conductive duct loss (supply air at coil vs registers) and static pressure. I imagine if it's already at a normal level like 0.5 to 0.8 for 1400 cfm won't get proper airflow with a 5 ton. Videos like these are interesting because people get to see how things are done in different parts of the continent. The indoor part of the install is absolute crap, betting corners were cut on every other part of the duct systems for both units. The "return drop" is a gem.

It's a shame that in this market, contractors can't work more holistically with the owner to reduce heat gain/loss in the first place. It's an after-thought. I blame the stupidity of the general public. Women are worse than men in this regard, putting cosmetics above all else and if it's a couple you know who makes the decisions being it what home to buy or what to do in a renovation and is always right. This doesn't just affect insulation -> pot lights are popular and it takes two to four times the same light as a regular fixture to get a decent effect. 50W a piece unless LEDs are used. They're installed in attic ceilings and reduce r-value and raise leakage even when done right. What good is a house that looks "nice" if it costs a fortune to run and is uncomfortable? US houses are probably worse than canadian ones, our codes are better.

Gas and go's are ok but don't rule out the air Filter before you add R22

Yep last week at a customers house I didn't stop at the filter. I decided to look at the coil because the return duct looked caked with dust when I changed the filter out for the customer sure enough A coil was plugged.

Offering insurance that doesn’t cover a leak. That’s BS. Sometimes more government regulation needs to exist.

Most customers are like junkies ...looking for the quick fix. Capacitors contactors and smaller inexpensive repairs but most of the time these older systems have reached the maximum life and are not going to somehow miraculously start saving the customer money after each repair.

R22 hasn't been phased out there yet then? It's been unavailable to buy here in the UK since 2012. I guess you guys don't have as much of a conscience about ozone depletion, especially topping a system up knowing it has a leak.
@pineychristian6 жыл бұрын
Sorry buddy EPA and government makes our laws. We just play by the laws they make. What refrigerant you guys mainly using now in UK. I use a lot of R407C for retrofit R22 systems but some people don't like doing that. I also use R422B. I have had a lot of success using them
@phil955i6 жыл бұрын
@@pineychristian Not having a go mate, I know you guys have no choice but to go with your own country's legislation. I don't recommend R407C to retrofit R22 as R407C is designed to run with POE oil & you'll end up with all manner of problems. We were using R422B & R417A as retrofit drop ins for R22 but even that's been phased out recently. So any R22 systems we come across now that require repair now get condemned & is ripped out & a R407C system gets installed.
@pineychristian6 жыл бұрын
@@phil955i sir i use R407C with compressor change outs. I'm very aware of retro procedures and extremely experienced at doing so. I work in a large school district with Trane WSHP and big Mcquay roof tops that some of my units take over 100lbs of R22. I maintain and repair 500 ++ units all were equipped with R22 when new. The problem with R422B it has a 16% capacity loss . R422B is great cause it can be used with any oil. R407c used with poe on compressor change outs only lose 4% capacity. Big difference.... You need to watch where you use R422B because of the capacity loss
@pineychristian6 жыл бұрын
@@phil955i I'm not aware of any country you can change laws at will. Thank goodness they slowy phase out R22 cause it would cost school districts or any companies millions $$$ to just change units or immediately change refrigerants. That would effect tax payers directly and they would be pissed!!!

Anti DIY HVAC I've had some success and some failures with it , for the price its always worth a try , not sure what you have against it
@TedCookHVAC6 жыл бұрын
What I have against it is, putting contaminants in the system never helps.... I would say it would be useful if it worked in a situation where it got a system in service for a short time until it could be changed but only if the lines are exposed and able to be changed as well... however, this system has the lines behind sheet rock and I would rather flush lines and keep them, rather than adding new ones that are unsightly.

Only used it on package units, have an account that has 20 of them, mid 80's Carrier heat pumps. We schedule change-outs a few times a year, have about 15 more. Leak stop is not a repair. It is a band-aid. Remember, a bandage doesn't stop a hemorrhage.
