When Hector Camacho burst onto the boxing scene, I remember thinking of him as the most gifted & trickiest of all the young fighters at that time. Combos, footwork, reflexes, defensive tactics - at his best as a 130 pounder - moved up to 135lbs & found he was at a strength disadvantage, so he relied more on lateral movement & defensive trickery - so much so he used to get booed because of his tactics.....don't forget, a lot less was known about PEDs in boxing circles at that time, & when a fighter moved up in weight, it wasn't as easy as it seems to be today - also, when fighters move up these days, they tend to cruise through the weakest competition, instead of looking for the toughest possible challenge, like Hector did..

Yeah, a record chock full of tomato cans, old fighters on the downhill slope, and guys who couldn't remember their Mama's names anymore. Name one great fighter he beat in their prime? Always the billed "star" on late night cable TV matches, but never on even one PPV fight. Talked a lot of shit, but always ran from punchers. Lost to JC Chavez, Trinidad, and Oscar, but never beat a big name except for a long-retired, barely-trained Leonard, who took a $5 million payday and laid down after a few rounds.

I eventually stopped watching him after I realized he was all hype and a runner. He escaped getting the good beating he always deserved and so many of us wanted to enjoy seeing him get. You're entitled to build a shrine to him, but don't expect many astute worshippers.

@@wbbils7052 and you would know all of the facts as a boxing insider. Integrity is what seperated Teddy from the fighters that Teddy trained. His integrity and their lack of. Legendary trainer Eddie Futch who trained Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes, also trained Riddick Bowe. Early in Bowe's career (his 7th & 8th fights), Futch asked Teddy if he would be Bowe's trainer for those two fights, as he (Futch) would be out of country training another of his champions for an upcoming match in Europe. He was also close with Lou Duva another legendary trainer and occasionally helped Lou with some of his fighters. Last, another legendary trainer Angelo Dundee was asked to make a list of whom he felt were the top 15 trainers of all-time. Here's what he had to say regarding Teddy: Teddy Atlas 10 OF 15 Atlas another on the list who made the transition to commentating, for which he is more widely known these days, nevertheless was apprenticing under D’Amato, and worked with Tyson in the earliest stages of his burgeoning career. He also performed his most significant training feat by guiding veritable unknown at the time, Michael Moorer, to the heavyweight title, when the latter defeated Evander Holyfield in 1994. Other fighters whom Atlas was associated with during his career include; featherweight Barry McGuigan, light heavyweight Donny Lalonde and Russian heavyweight Alexander Povetkin. All three, were old school, no nonsense trainers. Men of integrity. It was this same quality that they saw in Teddy. So WB (Wanna Be), when you've achieved the same status as Futch, Duva and Dundee, I will then consider your opinion and not before.

In the end, Camacho’s family did not have the money to pay for the funeral. Teddy sent the family a check. Hector made millions of dollars. Just another story of a champion boxer that had bad people around him that took advantage of him. Rip champ!

That is not true. I knew Camacho. I sparred with him for the Chavez fight in Bayamon PR. And trained with his son in Guaynabo PR. The Macho man had a 30,000 a month retirement with Wells Fargo for 5 million he got from the Chavez fight. They paid the funeral with no problem. He had homes in Orlando, Miami, San Juan and Conneticut. Stop bullshiting people.

it is very much worth it. i have had his since come out as well. but wanted hear him read it and there is bonus material after every chapter or two that goes deeper and updates stories etc. was the first audio book i ever heard lol. but downloaded audible app and has 30 day free no strings attached and comes with free book. so theoretically you could listen and cancel, however i also got the 'when heavyweights were kings ' book and love that. probably get 'the mob and boxing' next haha. im hooked until i hear all the boxing material

Hector Camacho, 50, Boxer Who Lived Dangerously, Dies By BRUCE WEBERNOV. 24, 2012 Hector Camacho, a boxer known for his lightning-quick hands and flamboyant personality who emerged from a delinquent childhood in New York’s Spanish Harlem to become a world champion in three weight classes, died Saturday in San Juan, P.R., four days after after being shot while sitting in a parked car. He was 50. His death was reported by Dr. Ernesto Torres, the director of the Centro Médico trauma center in Puerto Rico, who said Camacho had a heart attack and died a short time later after being taken off life support. He was declared brain dead on Thursday. The police said that Camacho was shot in the left side of the face on Tuesday night as he sat in a black Ford Mustang with a friend, The Associated Press reported. The bullet fractured his vertebrae and was lodged in his shoulder when he was taken to the Puerto Rico Medical Center. The friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, was also killed. Couldn't win THE BIG ONE (Chavez, De la Hoya, Trinidad) and too often was a runner. Beat an old, shot and long retired Leonard, who took the $5 million and an early rounds dive. I eventually stopped watching him, just as I stopped watching Sweet Pea and other "Willie Pep" types, who put viewers to sleep. He died a terrible death. Never a bum, but never great. Had to be tough to be a long term contender.

Macho spent a great deal of time in Detroit since a young pro. Trained at powerhouse gym, sparred at Kronk many times including a 1984 Pernell Whitaker at Kronk Private Gym. I grew to know him over the years did a little biz here and there. Always honored his word. Fun guy.

The best show thus far Freddy good story teller knows how to juice it up. Hector was a amazing fighter in the 80s my favorite.I happen to cross his path in the mid-late 80s at a truck stop in west broward florida named Seminole truck stop highway 27 and Griffin road.We made eye contact for a moment I didn't make a big deal of it because quite frankly I was worried it might lead to a altercation. I spoke to the manager of the truck stop and he said he was personal friends with Hector Camacho and Hector ate dinner with his family at his house on occasion. Manager of the truck stop had pretty Italian daughters. I I guess I should have had dinner over at his house too lol.

Hector Camacho was an extremely talented offensive fighter early on and always tried to take out his opponent when the time was right. Some say after his fight with Edwin Rosario in which he was severely hurt 2 different times and barely held on for win he changed as a fighter. He became more defensive and would out box and take as little risk as possible. Some fights he literally ran used jab punching as little as possible to win rounds. Fans were not impressed. The guy did have a chin but when rocked with good punch would desperately hold sometimes around his opponents knees refusing to let go until the Ref pried him off.

Oh yes it's TRUE after the Rosiaro fight he wasn't the same fighter. He got his bell rung and he didn't want to trade. He moved way more than most fighters. Julio Cesar Chavez walked him down and beat him up. Hector never would fight Pernell Whitaker, Meldrick Taylor or Roger Mayweather. He spared with Roger but wouldn't fight him.

I know Teddy would'nt say this, but from the sounds of it Camacho really needed to be taught a lesson at the time and maybe Teddy was the person to teach him. Everything happens for a reason. Camacho was probably grateful for that, in his later life.

Fights an out of shape and retired Leonard and "wins" only to get trashed by a faded De La Hoya. Macho was a "star" on late night cable TV against no name bums with ten-plus losses. Did he EVER fight on a main event PPV? I used to watch him ONLY with the hope that he'd get caught in a corner by a big punch, after which a referee would allow him to get his face rearranged by multiple flurries and knockdowns. He was, as a human being, an egotistical turd.
