Always was convinced that his "retirement" after Hearns was just a ruse to wait just a little longer for Hagler to get a little older. He woulda been destroyed if he had fought Hagler around the same time as Hearns did. I think the last 2 fights Hagler had with Hearns and Mugabi wore him down just enough so that he tired out towards the end of the SRL fight and Leonard (like always) was able to pick up rounds on those stupid flurry combos to the elbows that look good to the crowd but dont do shit. If he tried that early, Hagler punished him for it. He got robbed.

Semper Fi Brother !!! Yes, Semper Fi is the very essence of Marvin !! I met him a couple hours before he fought Mugabi in Reno 1985. I was close to the end of my active Marine career with to other of our brothers. I will tell we were in uniform and he treated us as if we were the stars. One of the nicest human beings I have ever met. A real Gentlemen. I have never forgot for a minute that meeting with him !!! I have Loved him from that time on, and I know my life has been better and blessed for it. What a great Man !!!

That MFer was a beast, and depending how much you value multi-division championships you could make an argument his career accomplishments are stronger. As a kid, Marvelous turned me into a HUGE boxing fan, student and young competitor. In fact, his loss to SRL so disillusioned me that I quit, Lol! I met the champ back in 2019 at an evening with. I went to the toilet and was washing my hands. It was empty and next thing Marvin came out of a cubicle behind me. He came up and asked how I was doing. I said good champ, how are you. He started and laughing and said he was trying to keep calm but couldn't as his fights were playing on the big screens and he was pumped. He started throwing some combos and weaving...so I (like an idiot) start to do some back. I didn't ask for a selfie or anything like that out of respect. I think he appreciated that as later when everyone was waiting for their picture with him, he nodded to me across the room and when it was my turn he said heyyyy, my friend. Bit of a long one but my story of shadow boxing with the greatest middleweight champ in history, in a hotel toilet in Glasgow is too surreal not to share.

The first time I ever saw Hagler was on tv when I was about 13. He was the meanest looking man I’d ever seen. I’ve been in awe of him ever since, such a tough, uncompromising fighter. It's not enough, as eloquently as Teddy puts it, nothing at this point can be enough. It's the elitist mentality in society, the press, politics, the schoolyard, everywhere. The cool kids choose who they will elevate and edify, merely accept, reluctantly tolerate or despise and delete. Hagler was a driven, dedicated and principled person from the beginning, no short cuts, no compromise and no prisoners! The cool kids did not like that about him and he was well aware of it. I think part of what drove him for so long, so deep into the game was being able to make the cool kids eat their words over and over again. He made the cool kids accept him as reluctant as they were and in the end the proof was in the record that documented the progression of his dominance and greatness. Undisputed middleweight champion 1980 - 1987, career record 62 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws, 52 knockouts, 12 successful title defenses. Obviously, I am a fan, have been one since Aug 1974 heading into my senior year of high school in Walpole, Mass. Watched Hagler fight boxing Olympic Gold Medalist Sugar Ray Seales. Seales' handlers did not do their homework and assumed that they were fighting some "local" tomato can. Well, a 19 year old Marvin took the Olympic Gold Medalist to the old school winning a unanimous decision. I was a believer from that night on and told my dad, a fight fan himself, Hagler is going to be the World Middleweight Champion. I love Teddy pointing out that we too often toss around terms like greatness and it waters the real meaning down and that Hagler truly exemplified greatness from start to finish. Teddy also points out the nuance of being a "throwback" and what being a throwback actually entails. Marvin was a throwback to the gritty days of the Great Depression, the old school of boxing. Marvin had to do things the hard way but he would not have chosen to do it any differently in my humble opinion. Incredible story of an incredible champion, the most overlooked and underrated story in boxing maybe.

He did follow an ancient Samurai proverb ‘when the battle is over, tighten your helmet strap’. His battle was getting to the top, he should've got a shot years earlier, 50 fights it took, all 2 loses and 2 draws (all questionable) eventually avenged by knockout. All 12 defences by knockout, apart from the legendary Roberto Duràn. No tune ups, Hall of Famers back to back, he was keeping the title. Undisputed middleweight champion, WBA, WBC, later the inaugural IBF and lineal titles. The title reign at middleweight as Undisputed is a record, Monzòn was stripped of the WBC for a time. He has more knockkuts in middleweight title fights than Sugar Ray Robinson. He was stripped of the WBC so at least Fake Sugar didn't get the full title. It's maybe better he walked. I think it was a close split for Hagler. He left with his awesome reputation intact, unlike the many sad cases of guys staying too long in the sport. Hagler was getting weary by then, Fake Sugar saw that the weasel. Hagler was and will forever be the greatest middleweight ever. He never got out of shape, he did it the oldschool way, the hard way. He is a legend, Marvelous.

Im not sure anyone had a better chin than Hagler. Not only did he not lose for a decade, and apologies to Al Bernstein in the Hearns fight, but im not sure anyone ever really even hurt Marvin Hagler the last ten years of his career, INCLUDING Thomas Hearns. Dude was an animal, and was always coming in, which hardly any fighters do or did. Dude stalked every guy he ever fought, and he fought THE BEST in his division during his career. I know hes a Hall of Famer, and recognized as one of the all time greats, but I still think the guy is underrated. When I hear all these guys talk about best pound for pound, I rarely hear Marvin Haglers name. Its bullshit.

I chuckle every time I watch the Hearns fight and how Bernstein screams “Haglers hurt.” He wasn’t. Closest I ever saw him to getting rocked was Juan Roldan. Not the bogus knockdown they scored but he did appear to shake Marvin in the first couple rounds. Marvin had the best chin I’ve ever seen, Hearns would’ve knocked anyone else out that night. Marvelous, I cant believe I'm writing this letter. You were the first real role model or hero that I can remember. Your presence spoke volumes, and I heard every word as you taught by example the definition of true strength, persistence, honor, courage, passion, relentlessness, and kindness. You were real. What's more, You laid a bridge between me and the sea that stood between me and my father, Who was in many ways an island. Boxing was the first subject I could remember talking to Him about and feeling like I was a man. Like I might have something worthwhile to add to the conversation. We talked a lot about your upcoming fight with Leonard. I was only 10, and I remember going with Dad to the fights over at my Grandfathers house, our or friend Carlos. Sometimes I just couldn't hang in. I'd make it through the prelims, but fall asleep. That may have been the reason I didn't get to go the night of April 6th, 1987, I don't remember. But I remember April 7,1987. When I heard what happened, I couldn't believe it. I thought Dad was messing with me. I had not seen the fight yet, but I remember knowing, and being able to FEEL that you were not hurt, but something was TERRIBLY WRONG. I liked Sugar Ray, don't get me wrong, but in my 10 year old heart I knew it wasn't right, and I sat in the bathtub and cried. I wept. Afterward I was mad. Later, even years later, after watching that fight 1,000 times, Even using it as a teaching tool I felt the same. You were always the Champion. You were a major influence. A real example of what it meant to be a noble, honorable man. When I heard the news this week, It was the same. No matter what the cause, I knew it wasn't right. It was already a rough week. I've been having to wrestle with some tough life choices, and so every morning this week I would wake up and go for a walk, just to get away in quiet, Only to find my footsteps feeling as heavy as my heart. Just feeling almost sick. It's really like losing a loved one, or to come home and find your house gone. You were a steadfast and reliable friend as Teddy Atlas so beautifully put it ( Thank you Teddy). So, last night, history repeats itself. I sit down at the computer and pull up some of your highlights tho I have many of your fights on DVD. I was fine. It wasn't until I watched you on Carson in 85 after Hearns, and saw your smile. My 7 year old son who knows you from your picture in the hall, and your fights, says "Dad, what's wrong?" I got up, went into the same bathroom, sat on the side of the same tub, and cried. You deserved so much more than what a corrupt world would give. I think that maybe with the state of the world, All the vanity, all the materialism, Placing value on style over substance, Everything you were in direct opposition of, Maybe you were too good to be here anymore, And that is why God wanted you. I hope, and think you were, happy and at peace outside of boxing. I trust you were because you didn't make weak choices. I want you to know your picture hangs in our hallway to serve as a reminder of all the noble things you stood for. I've told many young people about you over the years. You are much more than a boxer. I'm sorry that I never got these words to you when it counted. As I have thought about you so much, as if you were over my shoulder all week, Your strength and relentlessness came through. I faced the tough decisions, punched through to find new possibilities, and victory on the other side. Thank you Champ. Know we will love and remember you Always.

Very well put. Boxing formed a bond with my dad and I also. I’ve watched a lot of these tributes and reading the comments in the last week. Even though Marvin was snubbed by a lot of the Powers that Be, the fans know how truly great and special he was. It was an absolute treat to watch him in the 80s and will always cherish the time my dad took me to watch his fight with Hearns on Closed Circuit TV at the arena downtown. RIP o Marvelous One.
