Teddy Fresh, a brand started by Hila Klein & co-owned by Ethan Klein (H3H3) released a shirt with the tagline "I Have Crippling Anxiety" which generated plenty of critique & questions surrounding the commercialization of mental health. Shortly after, Teddy Fresh quickly addressed the situation, apologized, and made the move to donate 100% of the profits to mental health organizations.
HOWEVER
Uploading a video AFTER the fact titled "Teddy Fresh Got Cancelled Over This Shirt" invalidates the honesty of said move & creates further questions on where Ethan - not so much Hila - stands with all of this, especially being that the shirt in question is Ethan's concept.

first of all, yes, Ethan is historically bad at handling criticism and he's often defensive, but to be fair he's been getting an absurd amount of hate ever since he started the podcast so I get how that would make you a bit defensive. And to be honest the hate comments were so much louder than the peoppe who were respectfully voicing concerns. I was scrolling through the comments on Instagram and Twitter and a lot of people were already ready to dance on their grave, my man. unfortunately the H3 hate train is really fast and a lot of people could not fucking wait for TF to make a faux pas so they could cancel it (yes, CANCEL, the teddyfreshisoverparty was even trending in the US for a short while). Your points here are all valid, Ethan is often defensive as fuck and can't take constructive criticism, I hate how he handled it here, but you cannot ignore the fact that H3 is a fairly controversial channel that has a lot of actual vicious haters that are ready to push the cancel button on them at any moment

I have a lot of anxiety’s and depression problems so I feel like I can speak well on this situation. Anxiety is like a fart, if you hold it in your gonna feel terrible but if you let it out people are going to stare at you weirdly, which makes anxiety worse. If I was to wear a shirt that said “I have crippling anxiety” I would feel constantly anxious that people were judging me, and making fun of me. Also I would get angry at the people that would wear the shirt because “it’s cool and quirky” and not because of their actual crippling anxiety. Crippling anxiety is not a hoodie you can put off and on, it’s not a golden necklace to show off

Honestly i understood the “concept” of the shirt as soon as I saw it. I looked at it, looked at the sleeves, looked at the bear, figured it out. People aren’t as dumb and gullible as you think man. Sure TF could have done a better job branding and explaining the shirt from the start, but just assuming that “no one will understand a personal concept” is pretty dumb man. Also why should an artist have to explain their art to a consumer? I know you don’t want to break down and explain the backstory behind every bar in your songs man.

But also don’t misconstrue my words to mean that I’m calling those who DIDNT get it dumb or gullible, because nowhere in this video do I even come close to eluding to that If linking Ethan’s personal trauma to a “rainy day” themed shirt the moment you saw this was easy for you, sweet, but it’s THAT level of personal experience / specificity WITHOUT context that threw the majority off & why they made the change they did Music is absolutely different because you have the freedom to be ambiguous & leave interpretation to the listener, while also creating something that is consumed differently EVERY time your music is played - it will never provide the same feeling twice And for the record, yes I would absolutely love to talk about what each & every one of my lyrics mean Merchandise is an immediate, one time purchase that is set in stone & can not be worn or looked at differently - it is a physical object and/or statement piece, and unfortunately with branding you HAVE to be cautious of what you release

I think the discrepency comes from how people view these two mediums. Both can be deeply personal artistic expressions. However, music being that is far more normalized in the minds of the consumers so they are able to reconcile the piece as being a more personalized treatise on whatever. However with Teddy Fresh not being an art brand and instead a "merch" company, the leaning is more on it being a commercialized commodity, and that is why it's tagline seems reductive. If ethan had shared his story and told the masses about the shirt's deep personal connection, then people would probably view it from a more humanized perspective isntead of the cold, clinical, commercial eye that merch is usually viewed from.
