Georgia singer-songwriter Teddy Swims, a.k.a Jaten Dimsdale joins The Pivot Podcast for a conversation covering everything from his influential upbringing, music, relationships, and future as a global recording artist.
Teddy Swims, an acronym for Someone Who Isn’t Me Sometimes, has created a niche in a saturated world of music by covering artists and now writing his own music.
Considered one of the hottest upcoming artists today, Ryan, Fred, and Channing dive into Teddy’s journey to this point and his transformation to stardom. Teddy opens up about his upbringing which he attributes to developing his chameleon soul. From being the grandson of a pentecostal preacher, a mother who loved southern country music, and a father who gravitated toward hip-hop and soul, music has always been boundaryless for Swims.
Discovering early on that football wasn’t in his future, Swims took a risk by pursuing music. Sampling and making covers caught the attention of many such as Meghan Trainor and Warner Records. Teddy shares that his new ways of life took time adjusting to due to his middle-class upbringing and insecurities. Still, in awe of where his voice instrument has taken him, Swims lets the guys know his only goal is to become the best at what he does.
Ryan, Channing, and Fred inquire about Teddy’s love for Michael Jackson which sparked a profound topic, black culture. Teddy goes on to pay homage to influential Black artists and states he’d never be in his position without Black culture. And of course, Teddy talks about his love for Black women which excites Channing the most.

I appreciate the inter-racial relationship section of the podcast. As 44 year old white guy who grew up in an all black neighborhood outside of Philly. I grew up strictly dating women of color and married to one. I have my black moms that helped raise me because I was always in my friends houses because I grew up in abusive and hateful household. I learned early on that my parents despite their failures showed me what not to do. Im a huge Teddy fan.

The Pivot once again "knocks it out of the park" with the Teddy Swims interview. The ability of the Pivot team to connect with and relate to its diverse group of guests is simply uncanny. I am running out of superlatives to describe you. You make me so proud to be a black man even if some folks hate us because of our skin color. You men deserve, at the very least, an Emmy. Though people may appear to be perfect, I always like to leave room for them to be human...to make mistakes along the way. Remember, it is easy to love a person when they are shinning. But it is when they fall and make a mess of things --- this is when our "support" actually matters most. So save a half cup of your love for when your hero or shero needs it the most. One love family.

Hi pivot team, love this and I know your editors have quick turnaround times but one extra suggestion. A dedicated audio recorder/mixer combo (like the TASCAM) where all the sounds from the different audio sources (lav mics, boom etc) go into and are mixed/levelled properly would be nice. It appears that each mic is connected to a person's camera (eg in parts where the camera was on RC and Channing is interjecting his voice sounds distant, and vice versa) while this is good as it removes scratch audio. It would be better if scratch audio was recorded on the camera and the show audio went to a portable audio recorder- mixer device. This can then be synced in the edit. Probably help to use a clapperboard or any loud pop sound as a cue for audio syncing before the start of the show too. Just a suggestion, keep up the awesome work

seems like an educated suggestion, can you explain this in lamest terms for people like myself?
@xelaander8429
@xelaander8429 2 жыл бұрын
@@vittiriowashington5211 okay, erm, this is hard. But let me put it like this, you know how when you're watching a morning show or other interview type setup the voices of everyone sounds even. Like they're coming at you from the same place? Well when recording with multiple cameras positioned at different places the sound/loudness of one person's voice is relative to their proximity to the camera. And sometimes when recording people pair the lavalier microphone receivers directly to the camera because it makes the editing easier. But usually you want to pair the microphones to a mixer first so the audio tech on set can create that even level of sound across the hosts and guests before feeding that to the camera or as a standalone audio file that can be used in editing. I don't know if this helps 🤷🏿‍♂️

I loved how Teddy brought up that he wasn't even thinking about being a business man or running a business, he just wanted to sing. From that passion and gift he is able to give his friends jobs and opportunity and take care of the people he loves and allow them to elevate and ascend as he does. Powerful to think about. Our gifts are not just for us but to bless the world and the people around us.

At about the 35:45 moment. Teddy talks on how people reacted to his music when it first started to become available on social media and how they initially may have thought one of two things; that he was either humorous or that he actually was someone with a unique and talented voice. Since this recorded session on the Pivot a year ago, Teddy released a song he co wrote entitled Lose Control. It moved me to tears at how beatifully arranged it was, from the set and lighting to his attire and most importantly, the incredible musicianship that was performed live by his band members in this video. I decided to watch some reaction videos of this song on You Tube for that moment...when these listeners react from hearing the song for the very first time. Man...if you want to see pure vulnerability from everyday people on screen, the kind of response that delivers goose bumps on their skin and turns their faces into some uncontrolled contortion of disbelief and love all at the same time, then that's what you'll see when they hear his sing this song. Man, it's so beautiful to see grown ass adults. both men and women of all colour, race and age being moved in such a manner that their innocence and vulnerability is being recorded while allowing their true emotions to surface for us all to see.. That is why I love music so damn much. It is universal and unifying all at the same time. It truly is my happy place in life. So, to all the insecure people like Teddy (I'm already in line) who are facing the world everyday to teach us that it's okay to be yourself because you are more than enough. We have been purposely conditioned not to show our emotions as it can be viewed as a sign of weakness, when if fact that is what this world needs more than anything...to be an imperfect human being and experience that for all it is worth. That is the gift we have been given for this journey through life. Teddy just reminds us through his voiice to do so and gives us permission to truly be ourselves.

First time ever seeing this show, and I legit just discovered Teddy too like a day ago, and I REALLY enjoyed it. Wasn't necessarily a fan of the whole culture section nonsense. I don't understand how not being attracted to someone based off your preferences is somehow inherently rooted in racism. That's the same line of bs people are using now to say if you wouldn't have sex with a trans person then that means you're transphobic. Uhhhhh ... what? The fuck? What ever happened to preferences and individuality? Why do we all have to be the exact same person with the exact same tastes, desires, likes, dislikes ... Bro, in the grand scheme of things, I'm young as hell and the world has gone so far off the deep end and become so crazy anymore that I feel like I'm some sort of 90 year old curmudgeon. Within my short time on this earth it went from the 90s where everyone was laid back, joked around, shot the shit and had fun to now everyone is offended about everything and everything you do is rooted in hatred and racism and you have to feel bad for everyone else and you aren't allowed any free thought or free will anymore because you're just supposed to fall in line with everything and everyone. Nahhh ... not me. Grew up in the 90s and was considered the guy who loved everyone and everyone was my friend but somehow by todays standards I'm a racist, homophobic, transphobic, ... bruh name a phobic and somehow I'm it. Nahhhhhh fuck all that lol Great show, great music, great people and love yall but idgaf about todays political climate where EVERYTHING is shoved in your face. Imma do me.

Wow..this is one of the best interviews with Teddy I have seen. I assume Teddy barely knows you guys and yet you guys chat like you've known each other for a while. Teddy is so good at opening up about himself. I did not know he feels that insecure about himself. I get why he felt he got famous because of some kind of "gimmick". I think he needs a grammy nomination or something next year. And also, you don't have to force yourself to write the best songs. I've followed a few Chinese singers and their song quality drop years later because they insist on writing themselves. Your job is to deliver music. Your voice is the best instrument. It's okay to collaborate or use another writer's song.

Such a dope interview but respectfully balance doesn’t exist amongst ambitious people. As a husband, father of 2 who works FT and is building a business finding a rhythm is best way to put it. You’ll never find balance because that’s complacency.

Michael Jackson is in a class of his own, it's retarded honestly comparing anyone with Mike or comparing anyone to James Brown, these men invented their styles and craft. They are legendary Legends, pathfinders, 'ancestors'. Please.

There is something that Michael can do that Chris Brown can't do Michael would go anywhere in the world and there would be crowds shutting it down and Chris Brown can go places and people will walk by him like it's just another day

If you guys read comments just know your ad reads are by far the best out of any podcasts I watch. Simple right to the point an most of all you guys are yourselves. You don’t read off a promoter like most an it naturally flows. Pivot is the best for little things that y’all do that others overlook.
