The need for accurate and precise timekeeping once railways were established and timetables were required to stop trains from colliding is a fantastic historical story and well worth looking into. It also forced the need for standardized as opposed to local time to adjust those watches to.

Tell me about it. About 10 years ago I was in far eastern Siberia getting the train to Moscow on the Trans-Siberian railway after coming up from Mongolia. What I found out the day I caught the train was that all trains arrive and depart using Moscow time, which was like 5 time zones from where I was. It makes sense for the railway operators but is incredibly confusing for foreign passengers like I was! “What do you mean the 6am train to Moscow actually leaves at midday?” 😂

My first was a Citizen. Kind of surprised Longines wasn't mentioned in either video. In my experience, most people don't recognize Longines. Don't get me wrong, I think they are probably underappreciated... but Longines is the official timekeeper of the top horse races all across the world. They are also the official timekeeper of the Commonwealth Games and were for Roland-Garros (French Open) for over a decade, as well as many other events. A longines was the watch of the Bond villain in Casino Royale. They also have ADs in over 150 countries. The brand plastered everywhere compared to others mentioned in this video.

@Gigabitz - I'm with you; TGV got me to stumble on Teddy and I'm a watch enthusiast since that time. My two cents; Teddy's a class act and didn't mean anything negative about the "TGV Effect". Teddy's mention of the "TGV Effect" is a nod to TGV/Tristano and highlighting how influential he can be. Specifically regarding the Squale brand. Face it, it's an Italian watch ownership since the 1980s with solid Swiss movements and TGV's showcasing how proud he is by talking about Squale watches in many, many of his reviews ... simply b/c he can. And why not? TGV can't control if others get "tired" of hearing about Squale watches but it's an "effect" nonetheless. Teddy simply pointed that out.

This is a good list. You can even do one on well known brands, but if you're got a specific watch, odds are good for being a watch geek e.g. Seiko Alpinist. The TGV talk was completely unnecessary, and was disappointing. I have seen a few people on groups mention some quality control issues with Squales. It's hard to find Ball watches in the UK as most ADs don't carry them. Ever since an unfortunate incident in Thailand, I like to get my hands on a watch before I buy it. I have now found a small dealer who does, and have tried on a couple. One of the solid dive watches with 1000m WR and a basic Engineer had the most startling "lume" I have ever seen. The glass tubes lit the watch faces up like a Christmas tree. Move over Seiko. Ball lume is incredible.

Really enjoying Teddy’s videos, watching dozens this week! But likewise I didn’t get the TGV effect comment. If there’s a group of people who have soured to a brand because of another person that sounds like a them problem. TGV has pulled thousands into the hobby.

Terry, there's another channel that dissed Ball Watches; not so much for its quality (good watch); but Ball stabbed consumers who buy direct from Ball at MSRP prices; while Ball sells same watches at deep discount to the grey market retailers. Outta door, the consumer is already behind the 8th ball

During the height of the pandemic I had to fly from Hawaii to the east coast, one of only 12 people on the plane and the pilot is wearing a Christopher Ward GMT pepsi, we ended up talking watches for 30 min prior to boarding.

Both Ball and Stowa rock! I have a Trainmaster 135 and a Fleiger. My next buy will be a Stowa or Muhle marine. Arabic numerals, few to no complications, no bezel, quality 3rd party movements-vintage is me. My grail watch = Reverso.

I just like watches that are good looking to me and their unique features. I bought a Ball for the tritium, a Citizen for the eco-drive, and a Seiko for the kinetic movement for example.

FP Journe is a quintessential WIS brand--no one casually buys them I don't think. Good to include for Round 3. And I think Zenith probably needs to be in there as well since I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild that wasn't on an enthusiast wrist

I think the model of a particular watch brand chosen indicates enthusiast choices. For example the higher end Seiko watches that compete money wise with well known Swiss brands shows someone who places build specifics and heritage above general brand awareness. For example the Marinemaster 300s and 62 Mas recreations.

I would also add any automatic Citizen watch. They are very hard to find in the US. You only see Eco-Drive models. My NY0040 is the only one I've ever seen in the wild.

Great video. Love these mid brands. I am a huge fan of Ball and have 4 pieces. I am also a huge fan of CW. I have several of their watches as well. My favorite is the bronze with a blue face. Finally, Sqaule is an amazing dive watch. Love these too. Thanks for covering these brands. Nice everything isn't just the big ones.
