Absolutely love the 16570. Bought it 20 years ago and got a few other Rolexes, IWC, Omegas since but I keep coming back to this watch for everyday use. It’s tough enough to take a few knocks and yet presentable enough to slide discreetly under the sleeve without being ostentatious. It’s versatility is unmatched.

I have this exact model and must say, it's the guilt-free Rolex. It is worn appropriately in almost any setting, orher than formal or dress up date nights. For whatever reason, it is more accurate than my gold Datejust and Yachtmaster Platinum which obviously costs far more. The Brushed finish allows me to enjoy wearing without being overly concerned about scratches or scuffs. As a pilot, mine is used to actually reference Aeronautical Zulu time. The only thing I don't like about it is the cyclops. I don't like them on any watch. It compromises reading at least 3 indexes near 3:00 for the sake of magnifying and blurring the date. First time I replace the crystal, it will be gone.

Great video. Got mine June 4th of this year to commemorate a special occasion. I got an 04 polar no holes case and solid end link band. I ended up finding (and overpaying) for a 214270 bracelet and now it is the perfect modern-esque watch. I’ve only worn my sub once since I got the explorer 2. Wear yours in good health.

Check out the GMT Master II bezel swap. I actually bought one of these a few years ago because I couldn't afford a 214270 Explorer and the 36mm 114270 felt too small. The thing I didn't like was the fixed 24 hour bezel. I looked into it and the 16700, 16710 GMT Master rotating bezel is a direct fit to this case. No modification necessary. Now I have a Polar Pepsi Explorer Master II.

I have the exact same and it’s my favorite Rolex model. It’s not just the looks but it’s been the most comfortable Rolex I have ever worn. I bought mine as a like new but preowned watch for $3000 from Japan. This was right before the 42mm model 216570 was out and back then people were going crazy about bigger watches regardless of their wrist size. I am so very happy that I did buy mine at the right time and didn’t wait for the 44mm with Orange gmt hand. Of course I have to mention that right around the same time I sold my 2 tone Blue Dial Submariner date, complete and in perfect condition for only $4000 to my Boss and his constant insistence and pressure on buying my Sub.
@benwong11115 жыл бұрын
I used to consider the Polar but when i went to buy the watch i saw the black and liked the black much more. I know the black would look like GMT and Sub but as long as it looks better to my eyes on my wrist. Even though i tried to love the Polar more for the white dial black markers (i like that configurations so much on paper). But it just didn’t sing to me. I think it might be because of the not-so-white lume that make it look unrefined to me. If the lume was as white as the white dial, i might like it better.

Teddy. I absolutely love your channel and it has been a mainstay for me since getting enthusiastic about watches again a few months ago. If I can just offer one point of constructive criticism, it’s very clear that you have a bias towards smaller watches, which of course is absolutely fine, but it almost comes off as suggesting that larger watches aren’t as desirable in general… and I know plenty of others agree with you and prefer smaller watches. But those of us with medium to larger wrists may prefer larger wearing watches so don’t alienate us :) I personally prefer a watch case size of 42-44mm and that sits up off the wrist a bit and feels substantial. Call me crazy I don’t know why! One of the things I appreciate most about your channel is that I feel as though you don’t have an agenda beyond the occasional mention of your website, which is totally understandable. In every product category influencers have to be careful that they don’t seem to be pumping something specific, and I would just recommend you backing off on expressing such a strong preference towards smaller watches so much because it could appear that you are trying to drive the value of the smaller pieces that you own or might have a particular interest in. When it comes to that point in your videos, it kind of pulls me out of it them if that makes any sense. Anyways, I’m truly only sharing this because I am so in awe of what you have done with your channel and the way you present the information in such a professional, sophisticated and meaningful manner. Keep doing what you’re doing and best of luck on your continued watch adventure!

Congrats Teddy and nice vid as always. I used to only know Rolex as THE watch brand due to its top-notch marketing. As I grew my appreciation to watch more, I easily would pick Omega over Rolex of the same tier for its better engineering and historical value. That said, Explorer series (explorer 2 specifically) really was the watch of "love at first sight" to me. Combining with the history of the first ascent to Mount Everest. It holds a solid seat in my collection. The only question left is picking 1016 vs 1655 and 16570 vs 261570. And if somehow, you decide to make such a video..... well that's a good day haha Ed

I've owned the same watch for about 18 years now and I love it as much as the first day I bought it for many of the reasons that you point out. I was not a fan of the GMT mostly because I felt like the bezel was cheap looking with the color just sort of painted on. I saw a jewelry store add in the NY Times with an image of the Explorer ll and that was it for me.The engraved numerals on the bezel really made it stand out and the polar dial just popped. The 40mm version is going for around $5,500 to $6,000 and the 42mm version is going for around $8,500. Is there any good reason to spend an extra $3,000 to gain 2mm in size? With regards to the 216570’s orange hand which you referred to as playful - I think what is missing here is some deeper discussion on the history of the explorer II and the older model(s) that hand comes from. Everything is done for a reason, especially when it comes to storied watch brands, especially of course Rolex who are not quick to change things. Yes you must do a comparison to right this wrong otherwise I shall have to type comments in all caps. I own the 216570 polar - I do want to get a 16570 as well as I quite like both. I travel from the UK a hell of a lot, I tend to spend 1/3 of the year in the US and I’m often hopping to countries (just went from LA to Germany... a flieger will be bought) so the GMT hand is a godsend. Agree that the camera work has drastically improved in this video - not that it was bad before, but it is a marked improvement. I recently stumbled upon a small channel which to me, had the best outdoor wrist shot production I have seen (from a viewer/consumer perspective) I shall link it later for inspiration Stay black

Congrats on the 100k subscribers, and on a great watch. This is my favorite Rolex model, and I have owned several of them. Given the combination of non solid end links of the bracelet and Swiss Made dial, I assume your watch is from late 1999 or 2000. My first 16570 was from 2001, and had the SEL, but the lume was similar to yours, which is what eventually made me part with it: it had the same permanent green hue, even in day light, which ended up bothering me. And, contrary to you, I thought it was poor at maintaining night time readability after an hour or two. The hands, especially the minutes one, would become unreadable. So I sold it, and a few years later acquired a 1995 version with a nice and consistent ivory patina on the hands and indices. I am very pleased with this one, and of all of the watches in my collection, it would probably be the last one I'd part with. One last thing on the 3185 vs. 3186: a full turn of the crown will jump the hour hand by 4-5 hours on the former vs. 8-9 hours on the latter.

It’s the 1999 not the 1998 that moved to the luminova. The 2000 and up are the super lume. Finally the 99 has the quirky movement along with the Swiss only dial. The 99 is the rare one in my opinion. Great video by the way. This watch is hot because it’s a true tool watch that reminds me of a lensatic navigational compass and most importantly does not look like a Rolex.

These are really nice watches for folks with wrist sizes between 6.0 to 6.75 inches. Out of my small Rolex collection, my 114270 and 16570 gets the most of my wrist time (along with my Speedmasters and Sinn 556i). I actually bought my holes case 16570 w/ a black dial a long time ago, then bought a polar dial along with a set of black hands. In the winters, I often swap in a polar dial and wear it on a vintage leather strap. It's incredible. Only takes about 20 minutes to do. It's good because I also have a chance to blow out any dust from the movement and case and also re-lubricate the gaskets with silicone sealant.

Not sure why a big price difference as both are in great condition with box, papers & servicing records.

That's because there are several dial / bezel variations on this specific reference happening over a relatively short period of time, and some early combinations are very sought after. You can check which ones you own here: www.revolution.watch/tooled-rolex-explorer-ii-reference-1655/ And there: www.revolution.watch/tooled-rolex-explorer-ii-reference-1655/ I would assume that your wife's 1655 is a Mark II, and yours is a Mark III, judging by the years of production

My only Rolex - the black faced version of this Explorer II, bought new and more than ten years on I'm still perfectly happy with it. Agreed it has better hands/dial proportions than the current version, although I prefer the face/bezel proportions on the new one, and its gorgeous orange hand! But overall I prefer the 40mm to the 42mm in this watch so I'm staying with mine. That GMT function - I'd rather call it a 24-hour function, because historically the original (1972) Explorer II was conceived as a timepiece for those who might not be able to tell 8:30am from 8:30 pm - cavers or polar explorers for example - and you couldn't set the 24-hour (orange) hand independently of the main 12-hour hand. That came later, in 'our' version, which has been rather unkindly (but accurately) described as a 'poor man's GMT II', which is why I prefer the orange hand which is unique to the model rather than the standard GMT-style hand. It's possibly also why you prefer the white face, something which, as you say, sets it apart from other Rolexes. Another distinguishing feature I like about the Explorers - you can't get them in gold! To me, this says it's a proper tool watch. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand within the Professional range only the Milgauss and the Deep Sea share that accolade.

Funny ti see this video now! I have purchased a Polar and it truly is my favorite Rolex and maybe even the only one I'll ever own. (The coke GMT Master 2 looks nice :p)

Do recent Rolex watches sold by Bob’s watches come with manufacturers warranty if the warranty card is dated from say a year or 2 ago? Or do they void the warranty somehow?

My favorite ROLEX > Explorer II - sporty, reasonable and rare. Love the Polar dial! A fan

great video. price range mentioned must include the black dial explorer. i haven't seen a full set polar for less than 7k in quite awhile.

Historically, I've not been attracted to Rolex, but I recently ran into a picture of a stainless steel Sky-Dweller with blue dial that shook something within me... And then, the price truly gave me a seizure, lol

I would always take a sky dweller before Daytona.

That's my other grail. It's ludicrous how long they take to come out with a new design, and yet when they do it, it looks like a dang classic. Probably why it takes so long!

Man! Same here! Those are two of the only Rolexes I've found interesting! The skydweller is a unique watch with that bezel used to set it all up! It's brilliant!

Definitely, absolutely stunning piece with an absolutely stunning price

I just got a the tritium version! I agree with you that it wears very well and owning a unique looking steel Rolex sport watch for under 7k is amazing. Great vid!

Amazing choice. I've got the new Explorer 1 and this reference polar would without a doubt be my next purchase. Congrats!

Is a P serial with all paper box , barely used condition for $9k USD fair ? Would prefer to keep it around $8k but not sure if that's possible

Congratulations on your first Rolex and hitting 100,000. Does courtney like your new purchase? We all know she does not like the mix of the hand and dial indices shapes.

Great video Teddy! Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers! The Rolex is beautiful, but what I want to know is where you are getting the VHS tapes for the watch shots.

My Rolex Sub (ref 16610) is my favorite and I haven't thought about another Rolex till now. The proportions of this Explorer II look to be the same (which is perfect in my opinion) and I do like the white dial. Like the Jumping GMT Movement ... did I see drilled lugs? Is that standard with this model?

Deffo compare the old and new explorer 2! That'd make a very useful video, I'm still undicided which version I want to buy. Keep up the good work, I've only recently discovered your channel :)

Just picked this gem up yesterday. I love it but my wrist size is a 5.75 maxed out on the links I could remove and was left with an ugly uneven bump on the bottom of the bracelet. Ended up reversing the bracelet itself, which worked but now the emblem and clasp are upside down. Anyone else have this issue? Any recommendations? I really don’t want to change out the bracelet.

Hello. I am not a Rolex lover. The only one that makes me think about having is the explorer ii precisely. Specifically the white dial, aka polar.

Teddy, so side question what's the deal with the Tudor Black GMT? I've recently seen TGV and Federico and them have like this love/hate thing for the new Todur Black GMT relating to its overall quality, movement, and bang for your money, ect. I may be considering alternatives for a traditional GMT's but currently cannot do Rolex. So I'm really perplexed if that Tudor is worth it or just way, way tooo overpriced? I need some added unbias input.
