No-one would have had an issue with the Powermatic 80 movement with synthetic parts if it wasn't used in the PRX. The only reason it became a thing was KZbin edgelords deciding they were too cool for the PRX and latching on to whatever criticism they could find. These movements have been in a ton of Tissot and Certina models for many years with no issues and certainly no controversy

With the GS vs rolex Explorer question, I would also mention if in doubt, try it out. Sometimes a watch needs to be worn on the wrist to make up the decision which one to buy as the wrist presence for each watch is different and personal preference when the watch is on your wrist is also different. Also the factor of whether they'll sell the watch later to upgrade, if they want to retain better value, then I'd probably go for the rolex explorer, GS is good watch but value retention wise not as much as rolex.

Excellent video! I agree with just surprising a significant other by taking them watch shopping. My dad asked my mom to marry him, and then they picked out her engagement ring and both of their wedding rings together. For a later anniversary he took her to a jeweller and they picked out new settings for an upgrade. My mom was not at all disappointed. If this works for engagement and wedding rings it certainly would work for watches.

Chemist here. Titanium is indeed more reactive than stainless steel definitely. Titanium is like aluminum in that it will form a titanium oxide layer on the surface to protect the innards. And that later actually will stick to the original metal unlike iron, which will oxidize and then flake off. If you combine titanium with other possibly harder metals, it is harder to scratch. Hence grade 5 titanium

I’ve loved watches since the late 70s. I still can’t bring myself to spend over $2k CAD (never mind $2kUSD) for a watch. I’ve been happy with everything from Citizen, to Tissot and Hamilton. Closest I got was buying my wife a Tag for our wedding, and 4-ish years later when the battery died and the store wanted to send it away for “service” that cost something ridiculous, it was truly eye opening. On the other hand, my first Swiss watch was a tissot PR50 automatic that I bought in Germany for less than $300cad….30 years later Ive never serviced it and it still keeps time just fine. I understand what makes some watches more expensive, but theres a point of diminishing returns (like a Rolex GMTII "batman" that a store was trying to sell me for $21k US…nice watch, but no thanks).

No "titanium" watches are made out of pure titanium. They are all "alloys" which combine titanium with other metals - and that is is good thing. For example, Seiko titanium watches are generally made of an alloy that is more scratch resistant than some other titanium watches (like Breitling). Luv my Seiko Solar/GPS Astron - always accurate, and never needs winding or charging......

I think the issue with polymer components in Powermatic 80 movement occurs when say 5/6/7 years after being manufactured perhaps, eventually reaching the time to get service. For a standard 2824, you can go any watch maker to get the job done with a fair bit of lower cost. But for those polymer components, will they wear out? From all sources I gathered, yes, eventually they will. Now, here is the deal: can ordinary watch maker have these polymer components available to swap out? Quite certainly, NO! (Confirmed with a handful of businesses insiders.) All we watch collectors can do is bring them back to Swatch group, being charged with higher cost. But remember, those watches were targeted as an entey level with budget in mind. You paid a higher maintenance cost on a budget watch. Can I call it another form of stupid tax?

Every watch will get boring after awhile and while you may still love it and still love wearing it you’ll so get a bit bored with it after awhile so buy a watch that will keep you interested in it for awhile. These watches are watches with very fine details or finishing or peculiar functions or characteristics.imo the grand seiko snow flake will keep you intrigued far longer than a boring old plain black dial Rolex Explorer. We as watch collectors are weird creatures,I really felt that, when I first started watch collecting I loved automatic watches and Swiss made automatic watches and what collectors normally like but after awhile I started leaning towards collecting specific quartz watches like bulova precitionists or citizen or seiko solar powered watches with sapphire crystals due to getting tired and burnt out with always having to set the time on every automatic watch I had by looking at the correct day date and time of a quartz watch that I have on every watch before wearing it, so why not just wear the quartz watch instead that I’m seeing the automatic watch from? More thinking and the fact that I can just put on a quartz watch without having to set it first which is so awesome in my book especially if you’re running late for something or something like that. But I don’t really wanna have to change the battery so if I get a quartz watch that I have to change the battery it has better be special or intriguing in some way. So now after bad mouthing quartz watches for years upon years, lol, I now find myself buying and collecting citizen eco drives, seiko solars and bulova precitionists a lot, but they all have to have a sapphire crystal, big pet peeve of mine. And now I’ve never been happier wearing my quartz watches and all my automatics that are all way more expensive just sit in my watch box mostly.smh. It’s sad really.lol. Oh and for forever I was an avid seiko hater for like years and years due to seiko over pricing all their watches and ppl still talking about how they are so affordable and great yet you could buy a really nice automatic tissot with sapphire crystal for less money than a auto seiko with sapphire crystal and nh35 movement which is just insane literally and a rip off. It took me awhile to learn that when you buy a seiko buying a seiko for the case finishing and the dial beauty and not the strap or the movement out even the crystal. It’s all about the dial , hands, hour markers and case finishing when it comes to seiko. That’s what you’re paying for and that’s why they cost so much. I’m just letting everyone know this fact cuz it took me years to figure it out.i actually had to buy a really nice seiko dress watch to actually see why ppl spend so much money on a simple seiko watch with bad qc issues. I said to myself one day, you know what ? In just gonna buy a seiko, I’m just gonna spend the extra money to do so just to see what all the craziness about them is. And I was not disappointed, in fact I had to opportunity to return it after a week of I didn’t like it and I was like nope idc how much I spent on it the case finishing and that dial and hand set are just crazy fantastic, I would’ve paid more money just to keep it. So yeah, don’t knock seiko until you actually buy a nice one for yourself and not a diver. And I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised and change your opinion perhaps just a bit about seiko.

Good engineering makes design/cost trade offs all the time. It is really the essence of engineering. You could make a bridge, or a watch, to last 1000 years without needing service, but it will have many physical drawbacks, cost in particular. When Tissot or any other credible/established design house picks a material, it's not some random thing, they're engineering, and choosing the right material for the job (function, maintainability, supportability) and cost. Plastics are highly complex long chain hydrocarbons with complex properties. For any particular purpose there are shitty plastics and there are good plastics. I am sure they are picking the good, right, plastics. I have no problem with particular parts being non-metallic. There's always a reason for it.

Can you wear a dive watch with a suit? Heck ya'! I wore my black dial Planet Ocean with a tux the other night and it looked fantastic. That watch looks great with anything from jeans and a t-shirt to a tux. Hmmm...maybe I'm just so good looking that I make any watch look good...😉

Teddy I’m not sure you will see this but Raymond Weil I believe just introduced the freelancer Skeleton in 38mm and I am praying you do a review on it. Between the millesime and this new skeleton I think that brand is really doing something special.

My answers to the questions as an unqualified simpleton: 1. It’s San Martin, anything above that is overpriced 2. Any movement can technically be serviced. Swatch does not service them, they swap them out. 3. Titanium is better for weight and aesthetics, regardless of scratching. 4. Not really, just ask them w/ subtlety 5. GS 6. Absolutely not. Only dress watch 7. Omega Speedmaster (stolen in Guatemala) 8. No, don’t buy it either way.

That powermatic 80 absolutely falls apart under the macro lens. Worst looking movement I've seen.

And that's matters for what reason? This is a £600 retail watch, £350-400 secondary. It is literally a throw away watch. Less cost to buy than a standard service on a luxury brand.
