I’ve loved watches since the late 70s. I still can’t bring myself to spend over $2k CAD (never mind $2kUSD) for a watch. I’ve been happy with everything from Citizen, to Tissot and Hamilton. Closest I got was buying my wife a Tag for our wedding, and 4-ish years later when the battery died and the store wanted to send it away for “service” that cost something ridiculous, it was truly eye opening. On the other hand, my first Swiss watch was a tissot PR50 automatic that I bought in Germany for less than $300cad….30 years later Ive never serviced it and it still keeps time just fine. I understand what makes some watches more expensive, but theres a point of diminishing returns (like a Rolex GMTII "batman" that a store was trying to sell me for $21k US…nice watch, but no thanks).

Well, Powermatic 80s. I bought a Le Locle Powermatic (steel, in white with a black strap) about months ago as my first "seriously nice" watch. It's my most worn piece. I've come to realize this: does it deserve the criticism it gets? Sure. But at the same time, what people forget is this - having an 80-hour power reserve is super useful. Half the reason why I wear the Le Locle so much despite it being so dressy is because it's...running. Well, it being under 10mm thick is super helpful as well. But yeah, as an everyday wearer I can put it down over the weekend to take one of the dive watches out, and I know it's still running. Also, I just realized I've been wearing it for two weeks straight and I really doubt I want to change that ;)

As a watchmaker, here is my opinion about the plastic compartments in the powermatic calibre. First of all, i don't think that Hamilton uses that calibre in their watches, not the one with the plastic compartments at least. The pros of using plastic compartments, is that they are "self-lubricant", meaning that they don't need any oils in order to properly function. Resistance in magnetism in kinda irrelevant, because the main compartment you don't want magnetised, is the balance spring. So the calibre overall isn't resilient to magnetism. Also, i don't think that plastic compartments play significant role to the power reserve, i mean they could use different main springs in order to achieve the 80 hours power reserve. As for the cons, plastic compartments cannot be fixed, meaning that if they are broken in any kind of form, they have to be replaced. In my experience, they are a liiiiiiitle bit easier to be broken, compared to original steel ones. To conclude, these movements are not as bad as people describe them, but saying that having plastic compartments in your watches escapement system is better, is an exaggeration to say the least :P

With the GS vs rolex Explorer question, I would also mention if in doubt, try it out. Sometimes a watch needs to be worn on the wrist to make up the decision which one to buy as the wrist presence for each watch is different and personal preference when the watch is on your wrist is also different. Also the factor of whether they'll sell the watch later to upgrade, if they want to retain better value, then I'd probably go for the rolex explorer, GS is good watch but value retention wise not as much as rolex.

I think the issue with polymer components in Powermatic 80 movement occurs when say 5/6/7 years after being manufactured perhaps, eventually reaching the time to get service. For a standard 2824, you can go any watch maker to get the job done with a fair bit of lower cost. But for those polymer components, will they wear out? From all sources I gathered, yes, eventually they will. Now, here is the deal: can ordinary watch maker have these polymer components available to swap out? Quite certainly, NO! (Confirmed with a handful of businesses insiders.) All we watch collectors can do is bring them back to Swatch group, being charged with higher cost. But remember, those watches were targeted as an entey level with budget in mind. You paid a higher maintenance cost on a budget watch. Can I call it another form of stupid tax?

Chemist here. Titanium is indeed more reactive than stainless steel definitely. Titanium is like aluminum in that it will form a titanium oxide layer on the surface to protect the innards. And that later actually will stick to the original metal unlike iron, which will oxidize and then flake off. If you combine titanium with other possibly harder metals, it is harder to scratch. Hence grade 5 titanium

My big problem with Powermatic movements is not about plastic parts, but the discarding of a simple user adjustable method of regulation, such as was on the ETA 4Hz mechanical and automatic movements. It is the only "affordable" movement that has done this. All Chinese, Japanese, and many Swiss affordable movements don't have this problem. I can't help but think this was a Swatch Group method of upping their repair /service income on these cheaper models. Teddy was fair not to ignore this drawback but is is a problem that didn't exist in 2824s and 2801s.

Its a watch. It doesn't have a heart... Its not the Wizard of Oz

That Tudor at the end of the video is very pretty! Love the blue.

4:00 I guess you can also get a Frédérique Constant Perpetual Calendar in that price range too…

16:20 Maybe I’m not traditional enough, but I personally believe we can wear any watch in any situation… you want to wear a dress watch when you’re wearing a sweat pant?… go for it. You want to wear a digital tool watch when you dress up? Go for it… you want to wear a chronograph or dive watch when you dress up (or down)? Go for it… People that really love watches will understand. And people that don’t understand, they wouldn’t get all nuances of different watches anyway. Don’t wear a watch for others to enjoy, wear it for yourself. So wear whatever makes you happy, wherever you are, whatever you wear…. My 2¢

Been watching your videos for a while now and was inspired to start a collection. Started with the AMZWATCH, its specs for price and clean looks, now am looking for a dress watch to add.

Great work. However, don’t understand why you don’t include Parmigiani Fleurier when you talk about independent brands. I like Moser, but PF also has some great watches in the same price category or lower.

Funny you say that, because my own intro to PF was from Teddy when he did a whole video on the Tonda GMT Rattrapante.

YES. My vintage Omega 120M in SS on a bracelet is my best watch to this day.
