Something I’ve always noticed about even budget Seiko’s is that under a micro lens the hands and indices look super sharp. It’s crazy the quality they can hit at that price point.

The SRPD series maintains a fairly strong parts compatibility with the SKX, with maybe the exception of the crown and spring bars. While the SKX was certainly a great watch, what Seiko did here was a strong nod towards the modding community, and for that alone I believe Seiko deserves a lot of praise.

i started my watch collecting journey last year and i wanted to buy an SKX013, but it was already discontinued and the prices in my country was way above my budget (around $600-ish), so i opted on an SRPD55K3, the black dial variant on a black nylon strap, which was around $140 at the time of buying. I couldn't have been happier with my first automatic watch (sorry for bad english)

I have a blue SRPD with the beige hour markers and i love it. I have it on the rubber strap and it fits the "dive style" perfectly. I think Seiko nailed it with these unique color combos, and a watches itself feels good quality and overall well built feeling on your wrist. Yeah its not an SKX, but it doesnt want to be an SKX. I dindt buy it because of the "SKX-ness" of the watch, i bought it because i like the finish of the watch very much and its a beautiful lineup for the price. I highly recommend them if you searching for a well priced "Dive-ish" watch. ( Dive-ish because its only 100m water resistant. I guess its not enough for the divers, but i think its gonna be okey with 99% of the poeple )

Totally agree. I already had SKX, Tuna and Monster when I got an SRPD51K2 (blue but with a blue Nato strap) and it's fine. I like it. I prefer the look to my old SKX and the movement is better. I do dive, I wouldn't use it for deep diving , however I've both snorkeled with it and took it on shallow dives down to around 20 metres with absolutely no issues. I reckon it will likely handle deeper than that.

I absolutely love my SPRD79, stealth. Such a crazy awesome watch for the price you pay. I’ve already modded it with a double dome sapphire crystal with red AR and a ceramic black yachtmaster style insert. These watches are so easy to mod and work on and just look fantastic. I’m starting to want the cement version for the case alone. I’ve also had no issue the waterproofing, I’m not doing any diving anytime soon here in the Midwest USA. For swimming and showers, it holds just fine. Coming from the SKX I wasn’t sure if I’d be happy not having a screw down crown, but I’ll tell you, I don’t miss it at all.

The SKX was for a long time the "gateway drug" into the world of automatic watches and the 5KX is called to follow this path. I got into this world via the SRPD53K1 "Pepsi" during lockdown as the only SKXs in the market were offered by scalpers upwards of $500, and it's been a ride ever since! I agree, a Seiko 5 is still a Seiko 5, but with an upgrade movement through the years. Perfect. The SKX isn't replaced yet. No problem for me. Though I've never brought it deep diving, it's absolutely fine for swimming and snorkeling and I took to 20m with no issues, though I think it would do more, I wouldn't take it deeper. I've hardly had it off in the last 4 weeks as its so comfortable and classy looking. The 100 mts water resistance is perfect for me as I'm not a diver. I began collecting watches in late 2019, just as the SKX line was discontinued and the 5 line was announced. The only narrative I heard online from what I presumed were seasoned watch collecting experts, was that the Seiko 5 line was a disgraceful, lower spec, lazy cash-grab compared to the SKX. Not knowing any better, I assumed it was true and hadn't paid any attention to them since. Lately I've seen quite a few people praising the 5 series, it seems the vitriol has waned and people are beginning to appreciate these watches for what they are. The fact that the Seiko 5s were in no way intended to be professional dive watches IS the criticism. If Seiko had released these watches with a unique design, nobody would have given it a second thought. But discontinuing a legendary, certified diver's watch, then brazenly copying its design to launch a line of fashion watches with a hearty "You're welcome" left SKX fans feeling gutted. Raising the prices on true SKX replacements like the King Turtle and the Samurai just twisted the knife.

Yeah but those other watches have better movements than the SKX. That 7s26 movement is outdated and garbage in my opinion, in anything more than a $50-75 watch. It neither hand winds or hacks seconds. It only takes the addition of a very few parts to enable those functions. Now, why they didn't just update the SKX with a better movement, I don't know.

I'm new to automatic watches. Automatic watches have always fascinated me. I'm raising two young kids of my own and have other priorities to spend money on for the next decade. That said, I put aside some extra money and purchased the "Sand" SRP and the black and red SRP. Forgive me, I don't know particular model numbers. Excellent watches for the price. They've brightened my spirits every time I check the time. Accuracy for both runs in the single seconds per days and the self-winding option is perfect, as I switch them out here and there. The see-through back is a great little plus too. I'm considering the cement SRP or perhaps one of special editions. Anyway, they may not be for everyone, but a way too busy single dad in Pennsylvania loves the Seiko 5 to check how long he has until the next activity with the kids, or work, or school, or, etc. etc. etc. Thank you Seiko for making the day move a bit smoother.

The non screw down crown means it’s a quick set or wind and off you go. Nice depth to the dial. Amazing Lume and and total strap monster. Mine runs about 10 seconds slow. I love it!

Just picked up one in Taiwan (Ximen area shops) for 200 Euros. Wanted to go for the GMT version, but the extra 100 did feel worth that. super happy with my first automatic watch. Superb quality, it looks very good with a suit or business casual, and feels super comfy.

I used to think Seiko changing SKX as their fashion watch line out in a mistake, but judging from the number of styles they release it probably not the case for them in financial perspective. However I think they lost out a great portion of their support from SKX lover, who like me would like them to release an updated version which focus on the tool watch + luxury watch aspect (similar to what rolex did). I think Teddy perspective is one way of seeing the situation (btw great presentation as always), and lets hope that date will come.

Great Video. I love watches since a child. I actually purchased the all black seiko 5. It has become my everyday watch. I have customized it to look like the BB all black that is available sparsely at the retailers. I got the watch for $115 and with the upgrades of crystal, crown, bezel and hands. I am sitting on almost at MSRP. I also bought the Pepsi style seiko 5. To be able get it at $125 I am ahead of the game. I love your channel and been watching a while. I love to see the evolution you have achieved. Keep up the great context.

It's funny to watch videos on different brands of watches when I have been so laser focused on just 1. I am amazed at how many watches look just like the watch I want, but are not the brand. They also come in a vast variety of price ranges and features that I just did not know they offered. I really thought that Seiko was just a brand introductory watches for anyone. My experience was just heading into any retail store and you could buy one or two anytime you wanted. These watches look like they have come a long way from the days of the past and the world of watches is so vast...I really don't know where to start. Thank you Teddy for opening up this world in a more focused way and sharing your vast knowledge.

At the price these are often available at, I think these are great buys. I think people are just upset there's no ISO diver replacement for the SKX. Heck, even if it came out with a 4R36 movement, applied indices, and in general was elevated a bit like the Turtle line, it'd still end up being cheaper than one can find SKXs for now. I'm sure Seiko will come out with a nostalgia play SKX release in the next few years. For what these are (great every day watches with great looks), I think they do the job quite nicely. I'd be tempted to pick one up, if I wasn't trying to save my purchases for some more up level watches. I have zero qualms about recommending these (particularly the blue) to those new to the hobby, or on a budget.

I agree this watch is not a replacement SKX. If you want a dive watch then buy a dive watch. Its a Seiko 5. I dont want my Seiko 5 to be a certified dive watch. I want my Seiko 5 to be a watch that I use all day every day under 300 dollars. Its a watch I can wear while working on my bike or car or in the yard and take it off pour dish soap on it wash it off put it back on then look good at a wedding or church or wherever. If you want a certified dive watch then by all means buy a dive watch and leave my Seiko 5 alone. It is what it is and thats why I love it!

I think my main criticism with this new line is that Orient, largely owned by Seiko Epson, provides equally stellar movement, but at much better price points that can include sapphire glass, screw down crown etc for the same price as the Seiko’s. I just don’t see the value of these watches anymore.

I think they are targeting different markets. I had a friend at a prior job who was interested in buying himself a nice watch. This is obviously the moment you ask for budget so you don't sound crazy. He had said under $500CAD. I had showed him some options online that he might like, things like Orient and Dan Henry. But for his first big purchase like this he wanted to get to see the watch. Seiko's are so accessible that he could easily try on one of these models. I have certainly been able to see this watch a lot just buy window shopping at times. My friend might have not liked the color ways he saw, or like the bezel, but he knew the feel of the watch. He can easily go on and make a confident choice about buying a similar watch online. If he really wanted to and if he really liked that watch he could buy it outright in the store. Instead he saw a similar watch, that he liked more, with a lower price online (The DressKX, it was on sale). He knew the feel of the watch so he was able to buy it online confidently. And he did. Getting to pull the trigger on an orient can be difficult for some because they can never inspect the quality themselves before pulling the trigger. I trust what I read online when I bought my Orient Bambino 8 years ago and I am extremely happy with my choice. Some people prefer to insptect the quality themselves, it's natural as you don't know what you should be expecting. I think at this price point it isn't a bad price for what you get compared to the market, and they offer so many versions and varieties it can hook even non watch nerds which Orient, personally, I don't think will ever be able to do.

@@xpusostomos Well if someone has never held an Orient watch and can only purchase one online, however can go in person and see and feel a Seiko that is someone getting informed. While the 200m isn't a big deal for me I still don't like the idea that it isn't there. Think of it like a sports car. You're probably never going to see the top speed of the car but you still want it to be as high as possible.

@@pianofry1138 yes my thoughts exactly. I want my watch to be as rugged and indestructible and long-lasting as possible for the price and design, so the 100 meters of water resistance is a huge deal. It means my watch is just THAT much less likely to get water vapor inside.

I think for the first time, I am zeroing in on a budget Seiko, I agree with you. And the dress models cannot have misaligned bezels LOL. I do like the two-tone SRPE60 (SARF005). It checks all the boxes for a budget dress watch, and it does look, dare I say, like a larger Rolex 214273? My only concern is the accuracy of the movement. The watch will cost more if the timegrapher #s are way off, which is possible with these. Good job Teddy, thanks.

The non screw down crown is the main reason why I bought the 5KX over the SKX. I can quickly and easily set the time while it's on my wrist, not that I have to do that very often as the one I have is just -2sec/day. I have other screw down crown watches including a Rolex Datejust, which is also only rated 100m. I also have a Swatch Irony Scuba 200 Aluminum rated 200m without a screw down crown. As a retired oceanographer I will say this: a properly designed and made O-ring seal is all that's needed for subsea as the greater the pressure the better the seal. The screw down crown is just good security so the crown does not get hooked in something and pulled out while under water. So, the long and the short of it is screw down crowns are highly over emphasized for 200m or even deeper water resistance.
